I noticed this topic on a different forum, and thought I'd bring it up for discussion here.

Many actors, actresses, and musicians *seem* to be perfect, but are they really? This website (below) might give you a different impression of many of today's Asian idols =S

I was looking through all the before and after pictures... (and call me naive, but...) I was flabbergasted at some of the changes idols such as, Hideaki Takizawa, Die (Dir en Grey), Hide**, Gackt, Ueto Aya, Miyavi, Nakama Yuki, and even Utada Hikaru, have made. They look so different!!

See for yourself: http://jpoptrash.nihon-fr.com/chirurgiens/chirurgiens.htm

The website is all in French, so basically --> avant = before; après = after

I've heard a little bit about the de-racialization of the japanese, and I assume it extends to other asian popular culture as well. I knew Gackt had a lot of surgery, and I assumed many of the more effeminate looking J-Rockers did as well, but I was surprised and at some of the drastic differences in the younger female models/artists.

The results are certainly amazing, but I don't think it's quite fair since it sets up an absurdly high standard for your average young person to aspire to. Although I think the look they've achieved is a unique sort of idealized asian look, it still seems to forsaking some of their traditional roots and to a limited extent culture.

I was particularly surprised by the early picture of Mana. I've only seen one other pic of him back when he looked male. He doesn't even remotely resemble his old self anymore. Sort of a japanese Michael Jackson.

Of course, I'm from a german background so I probably don't get it. It's not easy being the master race ya know

Haha... holy spelling error =S Gomen!

And I agree... With everyone who's posted till now. It's shines a whole new light on some things I thought about the Asian entertainment industry xD

For one thing these artificially-created, "perfect" Asian images deal quite a large blow on the self-esteem of probably many young people today... and there's no way to stop them from comparing their looks to those of these plastic monsters (I use this term loosely), which is quite depressing, when thinking of how they will ever have confidence in themselves in the future.

I agree a lot of those people had plastic surgery (lol @ Utada Hikaru), but some of the before pics look like they were taken when the people were like 10 years old.

That's a lotta nose jobs though...

Very few of them didn't need to change anything if you ask me. Some looked like monsters though. What's the deal with the guy who looked like a typical A grade Japanese student though? In the "before" picture, it basically says he's a model student who studies courses until ten in the evening to return home with a dinner made with love by his mother waiting for him. Then he turns into some kind of monster and you see a skull at the very end. What's the deal with that? Did the guy die or something?

Yes >> Hide died in this freak suicide/autoerotic asphyxiation feat. =S

Yeah,I was thinking the same...Well of course some people will change from what they looked like when they were 10...Who doesn't?
The Before picture of Nakashima Mika looks kinda...not real to me.I mean, come on,it looks like a magazine cover, who would ever put an image like this on the cover?
Too bad I can't understand what does the text below the images say....Maybe it explains a lot of things *shrug*

wow... it still amazes me what plastic surgery can do! I think its a good thing... if people hate the way they look and are miserable, and if a little surgery can change their life... then more power to them!

That before/youth photo of Yukie Nakama is not Yukie Nakama. I googled for a real photo and accidentally found this, which apparently disputes that web page:
