Hmm cute question
> why be good when you can be bad and "cool" right ?!
> they have this hidden desires and can only obtain them by takin`the evil path
> of course the whole power thing
> they were initially good but some thing occurred that changed them

I find it interesting there are basically no (please correct me if I'm wrong) neutral characters in animes - it's all just good or evil (or bad, if you want to wrap it up in a nice package). Always wondered why.

Here is a list of neutral characters (I am not entirely up-to-date on some animes that are still updating , but at the point I stopped watching, they were neutral)

Sesshomaru from Inuyasha
Scar from FMA
Laughing Man from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Kuze from Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: 2nd GIG (Always wanted to type that )
Himegami from Hayate no Gotoku
Neuro from Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro
Solomon from Blood+
Mello from Deathnote
Charles and Rei from Eureka Seven
Greed from FMA
Amarao from FLCL
98% of characters in Gantz
The JUMP ninja from Gintama (I know he has a real name, but I'll always know him as "JUMP ninja" )
Ooishi and Tomitake from Higurashi no naku koro ni

There are probably many more I can't think of off the top of my head.

Anime has a ridiculous number of emo villains. I'm beginning to suspect that it has something to do with Japanese culture, because I haven't seen anywhere close to as many emo villains in American books, movies, or TV shows.

ahmm.. i find the reasons behind villains acting the way they are interesting...

Examples:
*Casa, from Black Blood Brother, is bad because she is unwanted in anywhere she goes; she has no place to live in.. she is a kowloon child... a kowloon child is unwanted in the society.. therefore, she does everything to survive...

*Shishio...?from rurouni kenshin... hmm.. no idea.. hehe!

*Kurei, from Flame of Recca, is mean because his mother thinks that he is the flame master, which everyone doubts, cuz another flame master (Recca) was born.. so the elders decided to kill Kurei but he is spared by Recca's mom.. and kurei does not want to see his mother suffer.. therefore, he started hating recca and planned to kill him...

care to share more...?

Oh, Shishio wanted to kill Kenshin because he wanted to take his place as Hitokiri Battousai I think... and then there's the whole being burned alive thing

Shishio Makoto wants to take on the goverment..HAHAHAHAHAH!!!! He's my fave villian together with Sephiroth.

for a character to be absolutely good... there must be one that is absolutely evil... that way the balance of the universe can be maintained... any body know any good anime that break this boundary???

Light was evil. He had good intentions, but he was slowly going crazy and by the end his beliefs were totally skewed and corrupted.

I could kiss you right now because i agree with you 180%. What fun is it to be good be bad. Evil have more fun and the good live good live(meaning boring). I don't want to kill people or do does nasty things but i still want to be a bad ass.

some weirder ones out there...
- The Major from Hellsing just likes war
- The noahs + millennium earl war think they're better than everyone/ humanity has gone to the dogs
- Dr. Muraki from Yami no Matsuei
like that last one is just freaking confusing.

The reason is because they have to. An anime cannot exist without an antagonist
