listen i, in my recent bored wanderings, happened across your confusion. there are very interesting views of the Air story anime version in various forums. it just takes a lot (or little) internet finesse to find those theories and see if you can believe them or not. From some ive read, the boy and girl on the beach (at the end of the anime-as well as the beginning, although only hinted at) are the reincarnations of yukito and mizusu. it is hinted at that the cycle is broken AFTER the trials of mizusu and yukito and that the next generation will be able to live freely and etc etc.. The reincarnations dont have to wait until the deaths of mizusu or yukito as it is a simultaneous experience and there are many reincarnations etc etc. The reason he turned into a crow was because he wanted to be near her yet couldnt in human form as a friend as that triggered worsening of the curse. Also that bought her time to spend with her 'mother' and eventually gave her the courage to reach 'goal' and break the curse? hmmm this is all a very LOOSE outline from theories and analysis of the anime. hope it helps a little and go use google to its maximum capacity.

it cant be simply love... because love is a recurring theme for all the reincarnations and relationships... as well as a sense of love from the original cursed couple... so no its not simply love...

Someone is serious o.O

Hence it's anime, and always exaggerated ;D

and,

It was indeed a strange ending, but I can't explain it, because it was almost 2/3 years ago that I watched that anime D;

the way i saw the anime the cycle was not broken.
yukito turned to a bird towards the end of the anime and at the end he turns human again to try to save misuzu but even though she wakes up she dies at the end and yukito tirned to a bird again feels that he is suppose to look for someone up in the sky(he loses his memory when he turned into a bird)and he flys up looking for that someone who i assume is kanna.
so the cycle has not yet been broken because misuzu was not saved by yukito.

uh...so basically, the cycle was not broken. kanna remains cursed, but misuzu was content to die at the end because she achieved her goal of becoming friends with her mom. but yea...its meant to be a sad ending.

ehh...kinda slow in the beggining. but the ending is really sad and moving. so i guess it depends on what ur definition of good is.

although the curse isnt broken with misuzu and yukito... the two kids are the next generation reincarnations of the curse and they have more time to try to break it so.... ya it is sort of implied that although they did die...the kids on the beach will carry on the mission and etc

AIR (TV) NOTES AND EXPLANATIONS

1.(trivia) Michiru, who is the spirit of Managi’s dead sister, is constantly shown as not being able to blow bubbles. This refers to a sad song that mothers of babies who have died sing to comfort themselves. The main verse is: “A soap bubble vanished away. Before it could fly it vanished. The moment it was born it burst and vanished away.”

2.In Buddhism, the spirit and a conscious mind state are two different things the ultimate goal is to perfectly fuse the spirit and the mind state together.

The spirit can only exist in a single entity, in Air The Girl in the Sky is the spirit of Kanna, the last of the winged beings who was destroyed by the Buddhist monks, while Sora, the crow, is the spirit of Ryuya who died trying to protect Kanna, the woman he loved.

As opposed to the spirit, the mind state is not necessarily linear; at any time the mind state can be in any number of humans, animals, or several types of supernatural beings (a classic example is a flame (mind state) that is transferred from one candle (body) to another and then to another and so on; no matter the number of candles there is only the original flame). Both Misuzu and the girl on the beach are reincarnations of Kanna. The boy on the beach is a reincarnation of Ryuya as is Yukito.

3.In order to destroy the cult built up around Kanna’s species the Buddhist monks cursed her to an endless reincarnation cycle of knowledge and isolation, suffering and death; to know that her only choices were either being alone and sad or developing an extremely painful fatal illness if she became fond of anyone; knowing that if a person likes (not even loves) her they, too, will suffer a painful death. And even if no attachments were formed she would die young because a human is not strong enough to be the reincarnation of a winged being. This knowledge is transferred from the oldest reincarnation to next as they died, therefore it would be transferred from Misuzu to the girl on the beach.

4.Yukito left Misuzu to convince her she would once again be alone and therefore recover but in fact he did not stop loving her even though he new it meant his death. What he couldn’t know was Misuzu would die anyway because she made a conscious decision to love Huruko.

5.The monks’ curse is finally defeated when Ryuya’s spirit, Sora, gives Misuzu’s happy memories of her summer with Yukito and Huruko to Kanna’s spirit, The Girl In The Sky, making them hers. The breaking of the curse is illustrated by Haruko loving Misuzu but not becoming ill and, as referred to in the logo, by the girl and the boy on the beach (Kanna and Ryuya) confidently holding hands.

A side note, because they've existed side by side for so many centuries Japanese Buddhism, which the writer(s) would be familiar with, has many elements of Shinto mingled into it and vice versa. I believe this accounts for any deviance from traditional Buddhism in the story.
