I'll go geek here and said, anyone whose seen the Superman movies will know that carbon makes diamonds. Hahaha. --;; So very geek.

If I saw the author notes on the gem, I probably could translate it... but I'd have to see the raws. Who wants to wait anyhow?

Also interestingly enough the Japanese custom of gift-giving is a high art. If Ren told her it wasn't from a fairytale, that would put her under incredible pressure and obligation to do something for him and even more. He should be aware of at least that much of Japanese culture, so that's probably another motivation for not telling her the truth.

That would be with any gemstone gift, it doesn't prove its a diamond.

As for the author's notes, she stated in Vol. 17 she considers Iolite to be an expensive stone to begin with. So any semi or precious gem stone is within the running of being Princess Rosa. Diamonds would be completely out of the scope.

In the end, nothing will convince me that diamond is in the running, I just know too much about gemstones and their real cost to think otherwise. Personally I think diamonds lack imagination. If you don't know what to get someone and you have the money a diamond is a non-thinking choice. I've sold enough jewelry in my time to see that. A more thoughtful gift to give is a well thought out gemstone. A typical man with just buy the diamond (trust me on this, I know. LOL). A woman or a more thoughtful man will look to a gemstone. Gemstones aren't just cheaper, you have to really know the person involved to get the choice right. That being said, the both of you have stated repeated Ren isn't a typical man and he really knows Kyoko.

But reading the mangaka notes in Vol. 4 and 17, I can tell you that even a Sapphire is over-the-top for the mangaka. It's just as likely to be a Pink Spinel or Rose Quartz.

No... then I'd believe it. Though who in their right mind would hide a diamond in a rose?

Well there is a person named Corn, but Kyouko also calls the blue stone she keeps with her Corn because he was the one who gave it to her.
