First impressions do have an influence, but now I know better than not giving it a chance without at least first reading comments about it from other fans and critics.

The art is a huge part of the series' identity. It sets the tone and sometimes the genre. I wouldn't read a horror manga with cutesy art unless I had something convincing me.
I usually base my final decision on whether or not to read/watch based on the description though. :I
