In my opinion, the lightness and utter silliness of the scenes in the anime is what endeared every fan of it. In the manga (which I don't read, but well, I got spoiled by Wiki) everything's a bit too dark, too serious. Mikan in particular becomes quite a dreadful character, with all her aliceS and all. So yeah, anime for me.
