Would you still watch anime if you were deaf?
|
I guess I'd watch it, but everything would have to be subbed.

|
No one important

Sure, why not? If one was born deaf, one's regular life experience would presumably be devoid of the usual sound effects anyway, and one wouldn't have any idea that anything was being missed when watching silent subtitled anime. If I acquired deafness later in life, I'd probably miss being able to perceive sounds, but otherwise could still enjoy the story and dialogue. I personally also prefer subbed anime (and subbed foreign movies as well) anyway.
Anyone who is deaf or knows a deaf person who watches anime out there care to comment? I'd be curious to hear a first-hand account (no pun intended). |

I prefer subtitles anyway and by far the greatest part of my watching is with subtitles (I don't stream anime on Netflix because they stream the dub and not the subtitled version). Though I do still like hearing the voices, it's not so important that I'd stop watching if I couldn't hear them anymore.

I have always been a person that receives the full volume of something through sound, so if I couldn't hear the music to understand what kind of tone was going on I would be sad but would still watch.

Netflix has had a few subtitled anime in the past, although looking through the current list, I see only one that I know is subtitled: The Sky Crawlers. For anyone that goes to watch it, don't say "No, he's wrong, they are speaking English". Yes, in the first scene they are, but if you pay attention, you'll note it is Japanese voice actors speaking it. They speak English while in the air, and that's where the first scene takes place. They had a few Viz titles last year that were subbed (despite dub versions existing for those titles), but those appear to have expired. |

If I were deaf, I would read the subtitles. If I were blind, then I would learn Japanese and continue watching/listening to anime.
