In the last 10 years, the interest in traveling abroad for college has skyrocketed! It seems colleges now more than ever are pushing their students to pack up their bags and experience the world for a semester or two. Some colleges are even pushing this to become a requirement because of the increasing globalization of our world.

My question is what are your thoughts on this? Should traveling abroad be a requirement for college? Do you think its an enriching experience for students? If you could travel abroad where would you go and why?

Personally, I think that its a superb idea, and i wouldn't really mind if it was a requirement. I think its a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a new culture, to go outside our realm of what we're used to. I think it allows to become more open and appreciate the myriad of cultures this world has to offer!

I really want to go to Japan if I could, because i love the Japanese culture and living there would be so different from American life. I'd love to learn to language too!

(this is my first thread hope it was a good one :sweatingbullets:)

Anyway, let me here what you think!

I do think there is a thread about Studies Abroad, specifically college.... But Im not sure if your topic is affiliated with it, but Im not really sure if this is legit.

Anyways, I agree with you, it is a good idea, it is an informational way for college students to actually learn more about other countries and other places. I do expect that the kids that have told me that ASIA is in Europe would actually be able to be part of a program of such kind so that they will actually be knowledgeable about where Asia truly is...

Well the Japan part was my personal preference. Anyone could post where they'd like to go and why. Usually when you mention Traveling Abroad, overseas is implied, but I'll clarify that now, i I mean overseas.

As for whether or not I would enjoy being there, I'm pretty sure I would, because I've spoken with various people I know personally who have gone to Japan and absolutely loved it. Even my cousin, who is an administrator for Temple University, who wasn't interested in Japan at all, had to go there for Graduation (theres a Temple campus in Tokyo, which where i hope to go if i get into Temple) she said she it was amazing.

Thanks for your feedback though! I appreciate it, keep it coming

I think that would be a great idea actually. I would like travel to some other country just to have a real life experience of other cultures. The media never tells you the whole truth and I just think it's better to experience it yourself and just find out what the rest of the world is like.

It's funny how those people living in Japan or Korea would be like "Yeah Im going overseas to study a.k.a U.S"

And how we wanted to go to places like Japan or Korea to study =P
---

Well, first of all they have a higher level of education than the U.S and wouldn't it be hard to study for lets say math while trying to learn the language? But hey dont listen to a 14 yr old

Temple's classes in Tokyo are all taught in English, and I probably wouldn't go to Japan until my sophomore or junior year of college, I'm taking Japanese my freshman year so I'd have at least a year of the language under my belt, so language isn't an issue.

Yeah we all need a change, i think It'd be nice to go to a different country. As for the language, I know its going to be VERY difficult, but I'm determined to learn it!

If it's an option in your college... DO IT. Everyone I know who did study abroad LOVED it. One of my biggest regrets was not doing study abroad when i had the chance.

i think its a great idea and I would love to do it .. there was a chinese study program at my college recently it looked fun ..but idk if i would make it a requirement because it usually cost over 2,000 at the least and some people cant afford that. Theres other reason as well but over all it sounds like a cool idea but i wouldnt make it a requirement.

yeah,... I really do think studying overseas should be a requirement for college because it is really a life changing experience to live in a different culture. There are far more things you can learn that you cant in school, so I highly recommend it. I was born and raised in Mongolia and when I was 12, I went to China to learn the language for two years. Then came to the US to finish high school. I am planing to study abroad for a semester in Japan in the next two years or so. I love learning about new cultures.
