They borrowed it for 99 years by the way. After the 99 year deal, they HAD to give it back, whether it made them look good or not. My whole family is in Hong Kong. Most of them work with the government and they've notice drastic differences since 1997. Since there are people who work for big cooperations, if u can secure yourself with a good position. Hell, there's not much of a difference really. And while we're on the topic why don't u ask what ur family members' thoughts about the Hong Kong basic law article 23? I see your point, maybe I was generalizing too much. Maybe it's not as corrupted as I though it was. But I believe that if they earned a 100 dollars, at most 20 dollars would go to the citizens only. Suppose the government is rich, even 20 dollars might seem a lot. If we were to see it that way, China's not the only country with massive resources. Take Canada for an example, of it's natural resources, I do not see Canada toxicated with chemicals. am not questioning China's economic reform. What they are doing to the environment today, the whole world will pay for it. Result: Global Warming. This massive reform of China, is it all really worth it? In exchange, Beijing is right next to a desert. When it snows, it is like it snows dirt. About China's over populated country. There are more people in China then you think there are. That 40% of people might be out of poverty, but do you really know the actual number of people that they counted? Maybe a larger percentage of people are stinking rich. But wat about the people that have not even been counted in numbers? Mao dezong has made some of the stupidest decisions in the modern era as chairman. Then why is he in the Great Hall of the People? I'm very curious about what Deng Xiaoping had done in his life time. However, if we want to continue talking about Deng Xiaoping, I suggest you make a new forum topic. the family members i have over in hong kong are regular citizens. they don't work for the government or for big corporations. they are regular shopkeepers. no i have never asked them their thoughts on article 23. the thing is, most of canada's resources are very difficult to reach. most of the northern part of canada is covered in tundra and hard to tap into. china's resources are not nearly as hard to get although there are some large oil reserves in some places that are nearly impossible to reach. although canada is larger, china has more natural resources plus more people than canada does. also canada is for the most part, sparsely populated. canada doesn't have nearly as much environmental pollution because back during the industrial revolution, canada just did not approach the sheer size or population density of cities in great britain or new england. canada's cities never approached the size of london or new york city nor did it have nearly as many factories as new england or great britain. environmental pollution is the price of industrialization. india and brazil are going through the same thing though at a slower pace. the united states and europe went through similar times in the past. back in the 1800s the smog in london was so thick people would wonder when god would come down to save his green earth. in the united states the dust bowl engulfed all of the midwest for more than half a decade and all agricultural activity in the midwest was pretty much done until the dust bowl stopped. rain did not come back to the great plains till a almost a decade after the dust bowl had stopped. however by that time the rich top soil of the great plains was all but gone. today the chinese are facing the problem of desertification just like brazil is facing the problem of deforestation. it's not like the governments of the countries are just sitting back doing nothing. china has started building the "great green wall" which is the planting of a shield of trees to stop further desertification. this is the same solution FDR used to stop the dust bowl and hopefully it will work. what do you mean have not been counted? they count everybody from tibet to beijing. if they didn't count all the people in the country then china's population would not be standing at over 1.3 billion. out of those 1.3 billion about 5-7% (depending on the sources) of them still live in poverty. considering it was over 50% just about 30-40 years ago, that is a tremendous decrease. the life expectancy has risen from 50 something to over 70. as you said, china is facing a problem of a large amount wealth being concentrated in the hands of the elite. in developed countries in the west, the top 5% usually hold about 50-60% of the country's wealth. in china the top 0.5% hold about 60-70% of the countries wealth. this is clearly a problem, but other countries in the past had the same problem. overtime eventually things will level out to more "normal" distributions. because mao zedong made great contributions to china BEFORE he ascended as chairman of the CCP. mao zedong's life is basically separated into two parts. the first part was him fighting for the CCP against the KMT. this is what the CCP's emphasizes and glorifies as his golden years. the second part was him becoming chairman of the CCP. this is the part the CCP deemphasizes and focuses less on simply because it was such a terrible disaster and a major embarassment. if you want to know more about deng xiaoping then you can go to the library to research. basically he was responsible for a large amount of economic reform in china which modernized china and put it on the stage of international trade. in my opinion he was one of the greatest leaders of china although his reputation and image were later tarnished by the incident at tienanmen square. Regular shopkeepers. The influence on them might not be that great then. Because they aren't so much connected to the government. I'm talking about there are changes IN the government policies. I guess if ur family is shopkeepers, I guess it doesnt really affect them. May I ask what kind of shops they work at? And are they ur parents that live in Hong Kong? Because if they aren't, people don't usually go telling every relative what kind of things they actually go through in full detail. If you have the chance, go and ask them. Because that was a huge change in the system. That's why almost every citizen went on the march of protest. Fair enough, Canada's resources are hard to tap. The thing is, since china is so largely populated and have such a big land, the industrialization's pollution doesn't even count up to what Britian. Then again, USA uses the most resources in the world when their population is not even all that large. Their factories have never been so vast as China. They counted EVERYBODY? now, do u have proof? do the sources have proof? They can just waltz into China and ESTIMATE the number of people. Overtime, they will level out to more "normal" distributions. Hm. When they finally "normal" distributions will the world be over because of Global Warming? And the 5000 years of history of China that they are so proud of. What came out of it? If you compare China's history with Britian's history. The 5000 years of glory history is laughable. And you do realize that most of the media in China is covered by the government. The government can say whatever he wants about China. When you say "great contributions", it was him in the first part was him fighting for the CCP against the KMT right? Now is that really "great contributions" when he failed to be what ever he said he was to be? His contributions failed him in the end. Is that what you call great contributions? Then can I say, my final grade was a F. But my great contributions before that was working very hard every day. A country does not need a sympathetic leader. Which was exactly what Tung Chee Hwa was. Totally messed up hong kong in every way. Based on what you have said, he might be a great leader to China, but really is inrelevant to my point. He reformed china to industrialization, but I'm talking about the rights in China. Did he have anything to with rights? i realize that you are talking about government policies now however i was never talking about government policies. i was talking about the daily lives of HK citizens the entire time lol. i don't know how life for the HK government has changed since then, so i can't say anything about that. my aunt lives in HK, and she owns a food stall/stand. the US is one of the most advanced countries in the world and a very large portion of the population uses automobiles. a large population in an industrialized country, needs a large amount of energy. which is where power plants burning fossil fuels comes into play. there population isn't that large? i would consider 300 million a lot of people. the US is ranked 3rd in the world for population after china and india. the united states back in the first half of the 1900's had a tremendous amount of factories. if americans weren't farming, they were working in factories. it wasn't until the years after world war II that more and more factories closed and some corporations went overseas. also most of the unskilled labor performed by factory workers is now done by machines which is why you won't find many americans whose job is working as a laborer inside a factory. the advance of global warming is already too late to turn back from. we've passed the point of no return. ever since the industrial revolution started back in the 1800's, the ice caps have been doomed. if china hadn't industrialized, some other country would have. if that country didn't, then another would have taken its place. there's nothing we can do about it. by around 2050 the ice caps will melt and ocean levels will rise drastically causing adverse changes in world climate. even if we were to stop everything man made (which would be impossible) that produces greenhouse gas emissions, it wouldn't do any good. it's too late. attacking chinese culture? how does that back your point at all? china had a huge impact on asia. what would korea, japan, and vietnam be today if it wasn't for the chinese? nobody knows but china's influence cannot be denied. also from china were numerous innovations that changed the world. the four great chinese inventions all helped to shape the modern world. gunpowder, printing, the compass, and paper had enormous impacts on the world. even if there were negatives that came with them, they were all important in history. other less known but important inventions were the rudder, blast furnace, and paper money. all these different innovations and inventions have a significant impact on the world today. i could write an analysis of the impact on history of each one, but i don't have that much time. everybody was a bad word choice on my part. sorry. people get their information from a number of sources, but the two most reliable ones are the chinese government and the united nations. since you distrust the chinese government so much then i won't talk about them. the united nations compiles data about all the countries in the world. this data is fairly accurate and used to compile charts and rankings from population, GDP (nominal and per capita), life expectancy, standard of living, many different percentages, etc. people don't just make up numbers out of thin air. these numbers and statistics are backed with reports from the current reigning government itself as well as reports from a number of different international organizations. they are all averaged to produce fairly accurate representations of the country's condition. of course they aren't exact, but they are relatively reliable. mao zedong might have failed in administrating the PRC, but he succeeded in the task of establishing the CCP as the dominant force in mainland china. that is why the communists in china still adore him. he ended china's period as a weak nation that western nations and japan could walk all over like a fur carpet. he established china as a truly sovereign nation. no he didn't do anything for rights. deng xiaoping was the one who crushed the tienanmen square demonstration. he might have not done much for human rights, but his economic reforms drastically improved the life of the average chinese citizen. that is why he is so great in my mind. what he has done for china is greater than what many other chinese leaders have contributed. in my opinion i would put him up there with qin shi huang, sun yat-sen, and some others i can't think of at the moment. remember that although china is a quickly modernizing country, they are stilled ruled by the totalitarian fist of the CCP. civil and human rights won't come anytime soon for the chinese. maybe after modernization sets in, but for now the CCP is still in control. even in the past china has never had much human rights. china has been under totalitarian rule for thousands of years except for the decades under the KMT in the first part of the 20th century which the chinese people were not terribly enthusiastic about. Ok, but people living out their daily lifes has more pressure on them ever since 1997. The system had cut off people forcing people to do more work than they ever did before. I suppose this doesnt change to people who own food stores, but people who work with the government. You can say some of the people are not influenced, but I think there are more people affected than you think. US is one of the most advance countries. BUT their population is only 300 million and they use up to 25% of world's resources. And there's 6 billion(est.) people in the world. There were tons of factories in US. But did US have as many factories as they China does now? US mostly sold what they made to their own people. China is selling things WORLDWIDE. And further more, I don't think China will eventually realize how heavy the pollution is and then stop. Because China's demand of things is so high, that they will never stop until all the resources in China have been used up. I suppose u're right. Other countries than China will industrialize themselves. Did you watch Al Gore's inconvient truth? It's worth watching. It makes you wonder perhaps we can still save the world. I'm not attacking chinese culture. China's history was amazing. The four inventions did shape the modern world. However, bragging about what ur ancestors did does not make a great group of people today. It's like saying my grandparents are really nice but that doesn't mean I'm nice too. United Nations. Suppose they sent out representatives to find the population. But there are TONS of small villages unknown. And representatives from other countries aren't welcomed there either. Since there is no proof, the representatives can just make an estimate of people in the village. And many villages can leave out more people than you think. China as a sovereign nation... If that is true, why is that news in china never show evidence of their actual crime? They just say it's a crime and they sentence them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4O5rtjMhlchttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVc888V-994&feature=channel If what he did was remarkable, the people of China will pay the price of industrialization one day. When there is no clean water to drink in China. The price is more than they could pay. To the people of China today it might seem great. But they will regret it someday. i don't know how many people were affected by the handover. however i doubt it was immensely dramatic and serious. many people that lived in HK before the handover, are still there. yes a number moved before the handover, but after it's not like everybody ran out and HK became a ghost city. also i don't see many people flying out of HK crying about how their lives were ruined, how much china sucks dick, and how it needs to burn in hell for being so utterly evil. i don't know how many factories the US had back then or how many factories china has now. the number of factories in the US peaked during around world war II, and during that time there were factories all across the united states. china today has many more factories than any other country in the world but that is not the reason why china is producing so much pollution. the reason is that all the cities, factories, etc. in china need power. power comes from electrical plants which in china, run on mainly on coal. coal produces a lot of greenhouse gas emissions. china is trying to lower its use on coal and build more on hydroelectrical power and other methods. china has made a goal of harnessing 10% of its total power from renewable sources by around 2025 i think. however to be realistic, today there is still no truly clean way that is also efficient enough to provide to everybody. all fossil fuels cause enormous amounts of air pollution, solar power isn't enough to power everybody, wind power can only be used in certain areas, nuclear fission produces large amounts of the radioactive and dangerous nuclear waste, hydroelectric power can only be harnessed in areas near rivers, nuclear fusion still needs to be invented, etc etc etc. until we find a way that will work both ways, we'll be stuck until our fossil fuels run low, and we eventually start world war III. if we can find a way that will work before that, then yay. the US did not just sell amongst themselves. they sold them to europe and japan as the US was one of the world's major providers of manufactured goods. the US only sunk away from world trade in the second half of the 1920's when the fordney-mccumber tariff was passed and also through the worst part of the great depression. once world war II started and especially after the US joined the war, production skyrocketed and unemployment was near 0%. after the war the US took up reign as the leader in world trade, and today the US imports most of its goods. china IS aware of the pollution it is causing. however there's not much they can do about it. do you really expect china to just shut down all its factories? no that would crazy. once industrialization and modernization start, there's nothing you can really do to stop it. there are sweatshops across the country where workers work for some of the lowest wages in the world. the weird thing is, people in china rarely ever complain. they never ask for less hours, and employers sometimes have to force them to go home because they won't stop working. crazy ass mofo's global warming will not end the world. it will just melt the ice caps. that will cause a drastic change in world climate and possibly wipe out thousands or more of different species of animals and plants. i forget how high ocean levels will rise by, but it will be enough to flood coast areas around the world. however the world will not end. it'll just be very different from today, and you probably won't be able to find any areas in the world that are freezing cold. i'm not bragging. it's true how much china has contributed to the world. i could say the same for a number of other civilizations. the greeks, romans, egyptians, indians (the ones in india), persians, and mesopotamians also had a large impact on the world, and their contributions were just as important as the chinese. perhaps the most influential civilization in history were the sumerians. that might possibly be true but if the chinese government (which would certainly have the most accurate data) and numerous international organizations all say that the poverty level in china is less than 10%, then what can you do to disprove that. do you, me, or anybody else have a more accurate percentage than they do? i doubt it. those videos have nothing to do with china not being a sovereign country. do you know what the definition of a sovereign country is? it is a where a nation is independent and fully able to govern the territory inside its borders. i doubt that. fresh water could easily be purified through any one of the ridiculous number of dams china is popping up on its rivers. of course the chinese people will and already do regret the damage they have done to their environment. however between choosing the environment or living a privileged life in a modern city, most would choose the city. i'll use america as an example to demonstrate this. america was once covered with forests and all of the continental united states was once a lush green land. now what do you see? cities, lights, roads, cars, and people all over the place. do you think anybody regrets living in that? no except maybe some naturalists who want to live "as one with nature." most people in developed countries by nature are selfish. americans are happy with their current lives that include electricity, running water, cell phones, the internet (and the massive amount of porn on it), naruto, and ak-47s. There's other ways to express ur disappointment then burning urself and swearing. Not many people of Hong Kong left. But there was a migration. I think most people in Hong Kong did not leave was because they've lived there for so many years, and thinking going to another country might not be better off. Nevertheless, during 1997 there were a huge demand of people to work with the government because so many had left. Some people couldn't even leave. They weren't qualified to enter other countries. Either they didnt have enough money or education. I guess US had paid it's price too. But US stopped because they realized this. Even if China realizes, I don't think they will stop. I guess no one will ever stop until we have the World War III. Ya, okay, I guess war is inevitable afterall. The sea levels will rise. One of the most major populated countries will be flooded. What will the world do with that many people? If there's only so much land, can we really fit everyone on it? Besides, if all the ice caps were too melt, the ocean's salinity will drop and will cause the shutdown of thermohaline circulation, if this is going to happen, the water will freeze and another ice age will occur. I was talking about how some chinese people decided to brag about what their ansectors did and then proclaiming how great China still is because of that. Then let's stop the topic about the Chinese government since we have no grounds on anything to say about it. it is still soverign when their laws are messed? If yes, then you can say every country in this world is soverign. Purifying water, as in distiled water? That has it's problems to it as well. The US is at problem as well. But if every single country decides to industrialize, what will be left of the world? I don't think anyone in US regrets it. So maybe, who knows? maybe the chinese won't regret it afterall. Maybe the world will only regret it when the ice age comes. i know there was a sizable migration before the handover. shouldn't most people in hong kong be on the level of the western world? hong kong is a prosperous port and a modern city. i would assume the majority of its citizens would be in the middle class and decently educated. or is there a dark side to hong kong? the start of world war III will depend on if we run low on fossil fuels before or after the melting of the ice caps. if it's more than maybe 10 years before, then we're doomed. OPEC will certainly pull some nifty strings, and nobody ever knows what the russians are going to do. if it's after, then the world will be too busy trying to rebuild itself and adapt than to nuke each other. another ice age will definitely not occur. world temperatures are rising which are the reason the ice caps are melting. once global temperatures reach a certain point, glaciers simply will not be able to survive any longer. this will make it impossible for another ice age. also the event of the shutdown of thermohaline circulation is still in the air. it's a possibility that it might occur, but that wouldn't cause an ice age. it could cause the cooling of the earth's oceans, but they would not freeze over. every country likes to brag about itself. the chinese have a strong sense of nationalism just like the US has a strong sense of patriotism and the russians have a strong love for the motherland. this is nothing out of the ordinary. do you still not understand the definition of a sovereign country? there are 203 sovereign countries in the world. china exerts control over its own territory. also i do not see any nations controlling the CCP as a puppet government. also china is one of the veto holders in the united nations and holds a large amount of influence, it would not make sense if it were not a sovereign country. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_sovereign_states every country wants to industrialize. that is their ultimate goal. when you reach the state of post-industrialization and modernization like the US, western europe, japan... your citizens enjoy a very high standard of living. your economy is large and rich. and more. the world will most certainly regret it when the ice caps melt, but people don't think so much about things say some 50 years from now. people think about things now. like most of the world right now is concerned with the global financial crisis. global warming certainly worries people, but the recession is the major topic on people's mind right now. when the time draws closer the united nations will certainly try (and most likely fail) to do something about it, but for now it's a longs way off in most peoples mind. which is a sad thing but we are humans. Since there's so much pressure from the government, even the people are in the middle class but they are so tired that they have no time to think about other people which everyone will eventually go crazy about it and turn the city upside down. Or what Hong Kong's doing right now; being money obsessed. War seems inevitable, and what you said very might be true. WE WILL ENTER AN ICE AGE. The ocean does not freeze as easily as fresh water. This is because of the salinity of the ocean. Freshwater freezes at 0°C and ocean water freezes at -2°C. However, when the ice caps melt (which most is fresh water) the salinity of the water will decrease and therefore freeze more easily. And when the salinity of the waters drop, the thermohaline circulation will either slow down or shut off. When this happens, the world will enter another ice age. http://www.commondreams.org/views04/0130-11.htm Ya, ok, they are sovereign. Let's see how long this will last. The point of "every country wants to industrialize", I believe u're right. Even if China does not industrialize, other countries will as well. This is really sad for the most part, that people want to destroy the environment without really realizing the consequence. And I do realize that no one really cares about global warming rite now, since they think of the recession more than anything else right now. it's what happens when you live in a developed and industrialized country especially one with a capitalist system. the standard of living is high, but there is an evident degradation in traditional morals and ethics in the population. we will enter an ice age? that is highly debatable. nothing in climate change is 100%, especially not the effects global warming or even the theory of global warming itself. there are many different theories on what could happen, but the most common is the appearance of more extreme weather, dramatic shifts in global climate, and rising sea levels. although the specifics of each are still under intense debate. here it says that global warming will delay the ice age by many years. also as i said before the possibility of the thermohaline circulation shutting down is not certain at all. it could happen, but i myself do not think so. http://www2.canada.com/sports/tennis/greenhouse+gases+will+delay+scientists/1048017/story.html?id=1048017 i doubt anything drastic will happen in china anytime soon. the CCP is still firmly in power, and there doesn't seem to be anything that will change that. however the world's governments will certainly face a major crisis once we run out of fossil fuels, and the ice caps melt. I still think hong kong would be better off with the british than with china. Should we gamble our planet, risking it to go into an ice age? should we continue polluting the planet like we are now? China will change if their industrialization fails. Otherwise, I don't see how it would change, like you said. |

I just want to know other people's opinion on this. And I don't think there's anyone in Hong Kong who wanted China to take back Hong Kong. But they had no say. I'm talking about China's policies and not the chinese themselves. I don't blame the British of trying to make themselves look good. They helped Hong Kong flourish and that's all it matters. They borrowed it for 99 years by the way. After the 99 year deal, they HAD to give it back, whether it made them look good or not. Although the British did suggest that Hong Kong continued part of their colonies, China REJECTED THE OFFER. It was not that they lacked power without the British. It was because of the laws passed to the city. They had no choice, so they ended up with China. Do you expect hong kong to blow it's city up? WTH? Hahahaaaa very funny, there's no way I could of protest 10 years ago. Start a war of china vs Hong kong? What are u, retarded? Yes, I do know I can't change the past. but I can change the view of the past. others opinions? well, what use is opinions when such thing had already happened?! china;s policies? well, so youre anti commie? i am too. british helped hong kong.. well feces. theyre their colony. of couse you help it so you can earn from it... okay 99 years... so youre saing china is the bad guys? well, heck. if i say im better than you so i borrow your daughter for 5 years with a formal contract so its all legal and stuff... but when the time is up.. i dont wanna return... but heck, would you not want your daughter back? what you said made it seems like they have to go back to china because china demand for it and they cant do feces. well, youre wrong, they can do a lot of feces! what you ask? well, like you said, blow up the city, kill the mainlanders, suicide bombers, heck, theres all those other shits. youre a idiotic fucktart the issue is over 10 years ago, you cant do feces, so stop screaming Why I can't I want opinions? If life is gonna end sonner or later, why don't you just die? Ya ok, I want my daughter back so she can cook, clean for me and I can use her as my slave. Is that it? WTF is wrong with you? Dont start arguing with other people when ur in a dreamworld. WTH DO U THINK THIS WORLD IS? A GAME? More like u' re the one screaming at me in the first place. very funny ma'am, it is our animal instincts to stay alive and to spread our genes -- especially on the verge of death. me dying due to a comment of yours is unlikely. why give in to fate when you have the power to change it? we can play god, can we not? deny nature! yes, like you said, you want your daughter back. so isnt it the same as how china wants hong kong back? China REJECTED THE OFFER. my dear me, a game it is. yet, unlike games, our world isnt one that you can start over. time is limited, and death is once. so lets call it a game of life that moves on nonstop. please ma'am, i do think im trying to enlighten you here. I was merely stating a fact that if you think something that's over should not be talked about. Then history shouldn't of been mention. I just want to discuss history and u're blowing up on me. Did I give in to fate? Unless you think death is part of fate. This is a game of life, and we will play this game until we die. But whatever I do in this game, does not need you screaming at my opinion on life. we study history in order to repeat history without the failure of our processors. if that is your standing, i have no say. We study history to NOT repeat the same mistakes. Isn't that why we have history in school? that might be what they teach you Is terms of Hong Kong or learning history? history in general..... can be so true sometimes. but always? who knows? it is you who decide rather its true or not.... no1 can tell you... That's an interesting way to put it. I've never met anyone who looked at it this way. "Evil exists to glorify the good. Evil is negative good. It is a relative term. Evil can be transmuted into good. What is evil to one at one time, becomes good at another time to somebody else. " - Mencius That's what history is all about. |

I was over generalizing China as a whole. Sorry. After the industrialization of China, there has been more freedom for people to express their ideas without getting severally punished. For an example, their entertainment industry. There are some excellent actors, directors who produce historical dramas worth watching. I do hope China will eventually turn into a really free country. As to how you see China is a free country, is up to you to decide. |

Well I'm with you on the opinion that Hong Kong should've been retained its position as a British colony instead.
I am in no way supporting colonization or an advocate of British powers, it's just that frankly, I don't think China can help Hong Kong flourish to its present state the way the British did. Yes, the British might be the colonizers but anyone can see that they did their own part in helping its colony to progress and move on forward. Colonization in general is bad, but in some cases it is actually beneficial--only if the colonizers treated the natives as equals and help them in furthering themselves. Hong Kong is one of those rare cases. I dunno, the way China is now, doesn't strike me as...well, something. In fact, the turnover of Hong Kong to China might just drag down the island's economy as a whole. |

I'm pretty. But useless. But still pretty. ^_^

I don't know I heard there were mixed feelings about the british. Some hong kong people like british occupation some don't. Same with china.

its not like theres not going to be poor people under the rule of britian. there will always be a difference between rich and poor. hong kong is part of china but it was just under the rule of britian because of the treaty. the world is trying to keep peace, so if you borrowed something you have to give it back. My dream is that everyone in the world can work together and help one another. the world will be a better place. ahahahaha =]
