haha, I was about to say, I didn't really find them to be all that smart, but I knew they had potential. I've been watching the anime, not reading the manga so I hope I get to see that in the anime because these guys thinking about smart strategies to beat Midorima or Aomine sounds awesome.

Smartest anime character I know is Kyoya Ootori of Ouran Host Club. Or possibly Light Yagami of Death Note. Either way, they both carry a black book around...

The definition of smart often depends on what area they are focusing on. With that in mind, it's quite hard to figure it out.

Personally, the only character I can think of who is smart in a way that you could call it "smart" would be Emiya Kiritsugu.

The man's intelligence is mostly centered on being very cautious and always predicts the unpredictable. While his predictions are not always right, he is quick to adapt to the new situation fast instead on falling apart if plan A failed. He is not probably the smartest character in anime, but he is at least qualified to be called a person with high intelligence.

The most obvious examples: Light and Lelouch are too ridiculous to be taken seriously. Their intelligence mostly relies on the Gambit Roulette trope and both are probably more psychic than intelligent. Realistically, being smart does not make you have the ability to predict events that can only happen by chance alone. Also, their beliefs are quite childish at times.

Hmmm. I'll have to go with Tessa Testarossa (Full Metal Panic). Although I suppose by definition, Nagato Yuki (from the Suzumiya Haruhi universe) would have to be smarter than anyone else one can name, except other creatures of the same ilk.

Thank god someone else sees this the same way. While I haven't seen enough of Code Geass to accurately judge its writing style, I literally cannot read or watch Death Note without wanting to vomit because Light's character is so unbelievably badly written. I would have been fine with Light simply being a megalomaniacal narcissist that thought he was the smartest man on earth when really he was just sitting in a position of overwhelming advantage. If only the author wasn't also trying to make it seem that Light actually is smart by manipulating the universe to make Lights incredibly stupid and poorly thought out plans work out every time, as well as literally dropping dues ex machina out of the sky every time he should have been found out.

Aizen from Bleach bothered me in much the same way, which was depressing as his initial gambit was awesome as it both blind sided you, as well as giving making you go "that makes sense", but he eventually devolved into the Things are Going Exactly as I Planned route of writing where other characters couldn't buy broccoli at a convenience store 6 months down the road at precisely 7:25 without it being part of Aizen's master plan.

As to who is the smartest character in an anime that question is almost impossible to evaluate in my opinion as "smart" can mean a lot of things, and getting a metric when different anime are so different from each other is pretty difficult. I mean how can you compare a character like Nagato from the Haruhi series who's literally some cosmic super intelligence, to characters of human level intelligence potential that are written well enough for us to actually see their intelligence.

For instance, I mean I wouldn't consider Maes Hughes from FMA to be the smartest anime character that exists from some purely "look at the character sheet for his Intelligence score" standpoint, but the guy is written is such a way that you believe the intelligence that the guy does have is genuine as the author does a good job of showing you that the guy is intelligent, rather than just trying to tell you he's intelligent. Whether those types of characters are smarter or not than characters of intelligence beyond human comprehension, I still am more likely to go "Whoa! That guys got some brainpower." when presented with someone whos intelligence is shown to me.
