Kim Haneul is the Crystal Lady | 2008.12.11

Wow. There is, uh, some serious ugly going on here.

I wasn’t much impressed with Kim Haneul’s (On Air) handbag design collaboration with Swarovski Crystals, mostly because it was supposed to be a crystal-studded special-event sort of bag — to be auctioned off for charity — and Kim just basically stuck glass on a plain black leather handbag. No wow factor.

On the other hand, when she showed up on the 11th for the Swarovski event as their event representative “Crystal Lady,” she sure had that wow factor in full effect. Only it was really more of a “Wow… that is hideous.”

I’m sure it wasn’t PURELY Kim’s fault she looked like a Who straight out of a Dr. Seuss book, because the dress was specially designed for her incorporating Swarovski crystals. (If I were her, though, I would have found some way to accidentally-on-purpose tear off some of those ridiculous arm flowers.) Seems like the “specially designed with crystals” experiment has gone 0 for 2.

Too bad, since the star has been looking pretty fantastic otherwise, such as her casual red-carpet glam at the Blue Dragon Awards.

Kim Ha Neul & Jung Woo Sung Are The Best Dressers of 2008 | 2008.12.15

The “2008 Korea Fashion Design Awards” ceremony, organized by DongA TV, was held tonight (15th Dec) at Hannam-dong’s Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel. And in the award ceremony, Kim Ha Neul and Jung Woo Sung have been conferred the best dressers of 2008 (male & female).

This award ceremony is already at its 6th year running. The final list is a result of a stringent 3-step filtering process. First, questionnaires were given to members of DongA website to compile the initial list. The list is then filtered by experts and reporters before giving them to panel of judges made up of experts in the fashion industry.

Apart from Jung Woo Sung and Kim Ha Neul, singer Seo In Young and Wonder Girls group also won the “Best Fashion Award” and “Best Style Award” respectively. (Hope I didn’t get the awards wrong, because they all sound similar to me. Congratulations to them!)

Agent Kim Ha Neul in Sea Chasing Scene | 2008.12.16

Some production stills of the much anticipated spy movie “7th Grade Civil Servant“, casting Kim Ha Neul and Kang Ji Hwan were released recently. The above photo is taken from a scene where Kim Ha Neul disguises as a bride taking photo shoots and after a sudden crisis, hops onto a water jet-ski scooter in a sea-chasing action.

“7th Grade Civil Servant” is about a couple Soo Ji and Jae Joon who are both intelligence agents. They broke up without knowing the true identity of each other but later reunites during missions. Kim Ha Neul plays as the top agent of NIS, Soo Ji, with 6 years of experience while Kang Ji Hwan plays as Jae Joon, a rookie intelligence agent.

Ever since the casting of Kim Ha Neul and Kang Ji Hwan in the movie, “7th Grade Civil Servant” is already under the radar of many, as possibly the most anticipated movie of 2009. Kim Ha Neul has always enjoyed high popularity but she became even more popular after her role as Oh Seung Ah in SBS drama “On Air”. Kang Ji Hwan has also swept numerous Best Actor/Best Newcomer Actor awards this year for his movie “Rough Cut”. Placed together, they are now widely regarded as the new hope to revive the declining Korea movie industry.

“7th Grade Civil Servant” is currently at its final stage of filming and is scheduled to open in theatres in the first half of 2009.

Lee Ji Ah and Kim Ha Neul To Take On Television movies too! | 2009.02.16

Remember my previous posts on the joint Korea-Japan television movie series? Aside from the four previously announced titles, today, the remaining two of the six part television movies/dramas were announced, with Lee Ji Ah and Kim Ha Neul taking one each.

Lee Ji Ah, who lasted acted in MBC “Beethoven Virus“, will be collaborating with Director Lee Jang Soo in the television movie titled “My Love, Ugly Duckling” as the female lead. She will be playing as Wang So Chung, an office worker in a wildlife magazine department, who is hideous but optimistic and possesses a vibrant charm. Even though she enjoys a high popularity within her department through her friendly personality, she isn’t liked by any man in terms of a love relationship. One day, she meets a “pretty boy”, and due to that man being visually impaired, he thinks of her as a beauty. Hence, Lee Ji Ah will play both the ugly and beautiful role.

On the other hand, Kim Ha Neul will take on the television movie titled “Paradise“. Although the contract has not been signed yet, Kim Ha Neul has agreed verbally to participate in this short series.

Apart from these two, the other four previously announced television movies are “Triangle Bell” (Ahn Jae Wook, Lee Soo Kyung, Kang Hye Jung), “Heaven’s Postman” (Hero Jae Joong, Han Hyo Joo), “A Dream Comes True” (Cha In Pyo) and “After Wedding Banquet” (Kim Sun Ah). So this completes the casting. The series will be shown in South Korea through SBS broadcasting first before heading to theaters in Japan.

7th Grade Civil Servant Promo Posters | 2009.03.03

One of the most anticipated Korean movies of the first half 2009, “7th Grade Civil Servant“, has released its first wave of promotional posters. This spy action romance comedy movie, casts popular actors Kim Ha Neul and Kang Ji Hwan where they will transform into agents from the National Intelligence Service.

The two posters showed each of them posing nervously with a gun against the wall. Since its initial announcement, it was often discussed and regarded by many that the plot is somewhat similar to “Mr and Mrs Smith” by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, but likely a more comedic version.

The synopsis goes that Soo Ji (Kim Ha Neul) and Jae Joon (Kang Ji Hwan) were a couple but they subsequently discovered that the true identity of the other half is an agent. From a couple relationship, they are now colleagues as well, albeit in a dangerous situation.

By the way, I really loved the look of Kim Ha Neul in this poster. She is truly gorgeous and sexy. This movie seems to be under too many genre but it will likely be a success if nothing goes wrong, just based on the popularity on these two stars alone. The movie will premiere on the 23rd of April.

Kim Haneul joins the Cosmetic Jam | 2009.03.25

This is kind of a random event, but it must be kind of cool being the basis for artwork, as On Air actress Kim Haneul was at March 25th’s exhibition opening party for a “Cosmetic Jam” at the “Clio Cosmetic Art 2009 Opening Party.”

The exhibition runs from March 25 through the 31st at Insa Art Center in Seoul’s Insadong district, and features ten artists who have mixed different genres (photography, paintings, sculpture) to create “fusion art,” which also reflects the cosmetic brand’s emphasis on bright, bold colors.

It seems more like a brand tie-in to me, but Clio describes the purpose behind the show as using makeup in a broader sense as a tool for reinterpreting “cosmetic art.” Kim Haneul was on hand to examine some of the pop art hanging on the walls that were modeled after her own face.

As for her acting, Kim’s next project will be the April 23 release of her action comedy film Civil Servant Level 7 [7급공무원], co-starring Kang Ji-hwan.

‘7th Grade Civil Servant’ Press Conference Held | 2009.03.27

At 11am on the 27th morning, upcoming spy action movie “7th Grade Civil Servant” held its media press conference, with the two leading actors Kim Ha Neul and Kang Ji Hwan attending the event.

“7th Grade Civil Servant” depicts the story about a pair of ex-lovers who broke up without knowing each other’s identity but reunites after being assigned on a same mission. Kim Ha Neul is an agent with 6 years of experience with her abilities covering all aspects, including disguise, inflitration, tracking etc. While on the otherhand, Kang Ji Hwan plays a new agent with absolutely no real experience in carrying on missions.

During the press conference, both Kim Ha Neul and Kang Ji Hwan also made a clarification on their recent love rumours. Kang Ji Hwan said: “Please congratulate me as this is my first rumour since debut. This is my third collaboration with Kim Ha Neul. And I guess the rumour started because we of our long time friendship.”

As for Kim Ha Neul, she said: “In regards to the rumour, I can only laugh it out. In fact, there were quite a number of rumours coming during that period of time. I was working out on that day when I received several smses asking me if I knew about what happened. I laughed out loud though. For my previous rumours, I became more distant from the other party when such rumours came out. However now, I would find it interesting instead.”

This spy action romance movie is set to hit the screen on the 23rd of April.

Kim Haneul follows “To Heaven” with “I Was Happy” | 2009.04.01

Eleven years after starring in a famous music video for a song by ballad singer Jo Sung-mo, actress and hair-envy provocateur Kim Haneul is again taking the lead role for the singer’s latest MV.

When she starred in Jo’s 1998 “To Heaven” video alongside Lee Byung-heon, Kim Haneul was a relative unknown who gained a lot of exposure when the MV (and song) proved to be a massive hit. So when Jo Sung-mo asked Kim Haneul to appear in his newest video, she agreed right away. She’ll star in the MV for the title track “I Was Happy” [행복했었다] off Jo’s comeback album (his last full-length release was four years ago with “Second Half”).

Most MVs are passing affairs, but “To Heaven” is a bit of an exception, and is still memorable as one of those prime examples of kpop’s fixation with awesomely melodramatic, over-the-top and tragic storylines. (Watch below.) It had a cinematic flair and grand scope, as well as an ending that left an impression. The video even spawned a remake (for the recent song “To the Hospital”), although that was pretty much a flop.

The “I Was Happy” MV shoots on April 3. Meanwhile, Kim Haneul’s upcoming romantic-comedy spy movie with Kang Ji-hwan, Level 7 Civil Servant, opens on the 23rd.

Kim Ha Neul Reminisces with Jo Sung Mo | 2009.04.13

It seems like friends do repay their debts later on.

Soon after the announcement of Jo Sung-mo’s comeback, Yedang Entertainment announced the participation of Kim Haneul in his new music video “I was Happy”.

When she was still considered obscure no-namers, Jo Sung-mo featured her in his music video “To Heaven” alongside Lee Byung-heon back in 1998. Now with her name hauling major weight in popular dramas such as 2008’s hit series “On Air,” she is now returning the favor.

In regards to appearing in a music video, the 31 year old states, “It reminds me of the old days. It will be fun, I will give my best like I did when I debuted so that I can contribute to its success.”

Although if his album sales indicate anything, he seems like he doesn’t need her help for this long awaited comeback.

Did Kim Ha Neul get Botox? | 2009.04.22

Kim Ha Neul has been pretty frustrated with the media attention on whether she got her botox or not. She is clearly insisting that, “No, I just put on a couple of pounds!” During her movie premiere of 7th Agent with Kang Ji Hwan, she showed up with quite a few cheek fats which led to the rumors. Because of her role as a secret agent in this film, she purposely gained some weight as she revealed.

“I believe in exercising and a healthy diet more than botox injections. I would like to show my emotions through my facial expression. But, it’s important for actresses to look flawless - It’s part of my job. I do think about hiding my wrinkles and dark circles around my eyes. If I don’t, I’m not going to be hired for the parts that I would normally be getting. Taking care of my body and looks is a career requirement.”

It’s pretty surprising that Kim Ha Neul can look fuller since she’s always been so thin. Is it pizza or botox? You be the judge.

Magazine Allo set for June premiere | 2009.04.12

Just a few days ago, I was talking about the upcoming trend of fashion dramas. Another new style-related series, tentatively titled Magazine Allo [매거진 알로], has announced its two leading ladies and, given the milieu — a competitive fashion magazine — Han Chae-young (Boys Before Flowers, Delightful Girl Chun-hyang) and Kim Haneul (On Air) are perfectly cast. (Or should I say, almost-nearly-practically cast — final contract issues pending.)

The series is being described as similar to Devil Wears Prada, with its main character (Kim Haneul) starting out at a monthly literature publication, which is suddenly named fashion magazine “ALLO.” Pushed thusly into the world of fashion, she faces her new tribulations with an upbeat and determined attitude. Meanwhile, Han Chae-young is the editor in chief at ALLO, showcasing a mix of style and editing talent.

So, not the most innovative concept, and not likely to be wildly original. On the other hand, it might be a whole lotta fun. I don’t think Han or Kim are exceptionally skilled actors, but their casting seems spot-on (I like it much better than Lee Jia and Ryu Shi-won in the similarly premised drama Style). They’re going to look gorgeous and have faaaabulous wardrobes. And great hair. I could get behind that.

Magazine Allo will premiere on Wednesday, June 24, on KBS. It follows Accidental Couple — which pits it against MBC’s Triple and SBS’s Swallow the Sun. (I know which one I’m NOT excited about!) It will air 16 episodes.

Magazine Allo postponed following plagiarism accusations | 2009.04.19

Han Chae-young

It looks like KBS’s Magazine Allo (the fashion drama starring Han Chae-young, Kim Haneul) may not make it to air after all.

The drama is not canceled, merely postponed, but with plagiarism claims asserted by competing drama Style, KBS has decided to swap out Magazine Allo for a different drama, a law series called Partner. The show will follow current Wednesday-Thursday series Accidental Couple.

A representative from KBS’s drama department stated that legally they are clear and have not infringed on copyright, but they dislike being caught up in a fight over the matter. They’ll presumably give the matter more thought while Partner takes over the timeslot, although this may indicate that Magazine Allo is in danger of being dropped.

This is too bad, since I was looking forward to Allo much more than Style, even if the latter is based on a popular novel — I just can’t get past the casting (Lee Jia, Ryu Shi-won). Oh well, it’s not like I’m hurting for dramas to watch at the moment. Style will premiere on July 25 on SBS (it’s a weekend show).
