are there any good sources to play this? not counting mahjongtime because people there are soooo slow and riichi mahjong isnt even played correctly there, plus you have to pay >.>

Seriously?

1) You DO NOT have to pay. There are TONS of "FUN GAMES" played for no money whatsoever. If you want to customize your avatar, have a rating system that doesn't reset every month, then yeah, you sign up for a premium membership. If you just want to play fun games any don't want any cool account features then its FREE. If you want to play games for real money, ITS STILL FREE.

2) Most of the games I play there have a ten second move timer. TEN SECONDS... and then the system makes the choice for you. And most times my opponents whip around a lot faster than 10 seconds. A full round (4 hands) of HK style mahjong takes about 30 minutes on average. Now, if taking only ten seconds to reformulate your hand when the gods of Mahjong give you a bitch tile is playing too slow I'll just have to put on my foam helmet and start riding the short bus.

P.S. IF you're over 18 and want to play for money you can.... Its FUN!

Is there any live Japanese or Asian Sport tv channels that broadcast mahjong games like the same format World Poker Tournament show?

Uhh, furiten is vital, without explaining that to people of other variants, they'll think Riichi is full of '"random hands" and "special circumstances"

Comparing it to Hong Kong style, it's slightly more complicated, and a lot less boring.

(hurr, toi-toi or color hands (honitsu/chinitsu) only = 90 % of HK style)

Furiten is: the inability to claim any of your discards to win, and more importantly, voids winning by discard (ron) if ANY of your waits are affected. The rule also applies for neglecting discards in riichi (permanent) or not (temporary).

The Official show site has now got a flash version of Mahjong
(It's of course in Japanese. So a basic knowledge of Mahjong is required)

Thanks for the info, but..... you can't play if 'you don't understand what's going on.

I've been playing riichi Mahjong online a lot lately. Understanding the game really helps you appreciate the show better.

Today I got my first "Bottom of the Sea" too. Now I just need to learn how to spontaneously shatter camera lenses.

There are a few. One of the most commonly used is Tenhou:

http://tenhou.net/

There is an English guide to it:

http://arcturus.su/tenhou/

However, *please* be very careful about playing on Tenhou. If you are inexperienced at the game, people will be annoyed and angry at you. Do not play online games there unless you consider yourself relatively skilled and knowledgeable about the rules of Mahjong. Also, it's all in Japanese; make sure you know how to read the numbers for the Character tiles, and winds and stuff like that.
