I said maybe because everyone has a different way of fighting and this could be one of them.

Probably not. I wouldn't think it would be too effective. I mean; If someone is trying to hurt me I don't give a damn how they look, I am going to fight them no matter what.

Though then again there is the concept of the 'snare of appearances' in which if you look frail and weak but are in truth strong and experienced in combat, usually you're opponent will be overconfident and think they have the upper hand. This is the only advantage I see.

Well, I know that samurais' kabutos have faceguards that were often made to look menacing (demon faces, etc.) to intimidate opponents. An opponent who is fearful will not be able to think as clearly and may hesitate slightly, which is never good in a fight.

warriors do not...maybe spies...
but an agressive appearance will intimidate or scare enemies, it's a psychological warfare thing...

I think that am important aspect of a fight is how the opponent percieves you. As Iced said, if they see you as weak, they may underestimate you, giving you an advantage.

Also, there is an aspect of Hollywood in this as well. Whenever the words "Warrior" and "Fighter" come up now, we tend to think of people like Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee. We tend to see more of a hollywood perpective now more then before where people were actually out and "fighting" not pointing and pulling a trigger.

Well about that intimidating, the thing really is not if you use your looks, some people just have that intimidating "aura"... Not of course meaning anything supernatural or such, the thing is the fightning style they use.

Then again, there are those ridiculous dudes that are hesitant to strike a female... And I am veeeeery ashamed to admit it, but I'm one of those... -_- must be something from my education as a child...

whether they know it or not, looks are always a part of a fight. a first impression may very well tip the whole fight. maybe you look weak, but you're the opposite, maybe vice versa. people always judge based on looks, no matter what they say. the way someone fights you will be based on the way they see you.
