I laugh at most of the reasons that people present or try to explain why they hate a particular character. It's as if they don't delve into a character's personality or who they are in general. Just because it's anime, doesn't mean that characters have to be perfect where they can fight off anything in their way and be chivalrous while succeeding in everything they do all the time.

Btw saying a character is ugly, slutty or whatever insults you can throw doesn't make your argument strong for why you hate a character. Although I agree with some comments about certain characters but there are a lot that just makes me what to slap my head and ask "did you watch the show clearly?". And that's for characters I also dislike as well. Then there are fan=base hatred. Although I agree that some fan base for certain animes are annoying, it shouldn't really be a reason why you hate a character that much.

I want to defend some characters that are receiving too much undeserved hate but it would be pointless to change opinions of stubborn people that only look at things 1-dimensionally

I would agree based on your principle. But at the same time, I can also agree with some of the posters here who has a legitimate reason for strongly disliking a character. Even if you delve into these kind of characters, why they`re presented the way they are, their backstory or their reasons behind every single thing they do, blah blah blah, they still come out as an atrocious character.
One thing about analyzing a certain work such as anime is too look at the characters from a critical standpoint, not just the point of view from a gushing fan. You can like a work but not their characters.

For example:
I like Evangelion (to a certain degree; I`ll admit, it could be extremely flawed and tedious, but that`s a discussion for another day), but I know that I hate at least 85% of the characters of that show. (85% because I`ve come into better terms with Asuka, but at the same time, she`s still a arrogant little bitch). You constantly have to delve into Shinji`s psyche episode after episode after episode (etc. before my head explodes!) and he stills cannot get over his self-loathing, but instead, turns to post modern existential nonsense that even Eva`s most sane fans would sling poo at the screen for all his dumbass choices, and an even more ridiculous conclusion (all THREE times). Rei has the personality of a blank slate (LITERALLY) that only serves as otaku fapping material. (I can honestly go on all day about this, but lets stop here).

The point I`m trying to make is that even though you get to know a character through an extensive degree, to the point of having a better understanding of them, doesn`t mean you`ll like them any better than before.

And regarding Lelouch. The only likeable thing about him was his strategies and intelligence.

I disagree with you so much about Lelouch, in th end, yes he screwed them all joining the Britannia and went to be emperor, but he did so because he wanted to change the world, he made susaku (which is the character I hate more than I could ever hate lelouch) kills him, according to plan, it was all a freaking set up to make the country better, its as the saying "He'l change the world even if he becomes the martyr"

Arrogant you say, everything he did after becoming was unselfish and just inhuman to do, because he did the worst things possible, took over the world pretended to be the worst of the kind dictator possible, but "Not once" did he tell anyone about the plan, only Susaku, which would gladly kill him in the end, because of the miss happening between Ufie, and he didn't even tell anyone about that incident, he was unselfish as hell, and I hated that about him, that's the only reason why I hated then ending so much, even though the ending was a master piece, it was not satisfying for me. Lelouch had a great character, might be a little to smart for his own sake, and was evil at times, but his character was great.

On the other hand, I hated Nina as the character of Code Geass, she was a disgrace pure fan girl of Ufie, could not see beyond reasoning, she was the most annoying brat of any Anime I have ever seen.
