What do you all think about the global piracy issue? Within recent years pirates have abducted freighters and cargo ships near Somalia and steal the goods/ask for ransom money. They have killed sailors and even right now they have an American captain hostage for ransom. http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/africa/04/11/somalia.u.s.ship/index.html. Recently even before this one there was an instance in which the pirates took control of a Russian (or Ukrainian, I can't remember) cargo ship that was carrying tanks and weapons they were selling to another country. What do you all think about this issue, and what do you think should be done to stop the piracy?

This issue CAN NOT be solved unless the civil war in Somalia ends and the central government can gain power. I spent a whole day in a cramped room arguing about solutions during a Model UN conference as the delegate of Singapore and well, it was just impossible.

Send more aid to Somalia and surrounding countries then maybe the threat would lessen. They do it for the money and some supplies anyway.

By the time you MC an SCV, build a terran base, create a fleet of battle cruisers, and repeat with Zerg, they will have amassed a formidable fleet and summarily raped your base.

Well some Euro countries have used Somali waters for dumping toxic waste and there is a 50/50 chance my country has thrown out some uranium on their shores which has ruined the fishing industry they had. So I say fight on Somali pirates fight for your dignity and right to live.

I don't know if you guys have read the news recently, but I'm wondering what your opinions are on it.
Here's the actual article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090412/ap_on_re_af/piracy
Quick Summary:
4 pirates invaded a cargo ship carrying relief supplies (food and such for poor people)
1 of the pirates went to go "negotiate" with the US navy. Luckily he decided it wasn't worth giving up his life for and is now in custody.
The captain of the cargo ship gave himself up (as a hostage) so the passengers of his ship wouldn't be hurt
Eventually 3 sharp-shooters (from US Navy) killed the 3 pirates (headshots) all at the same time and saved the captain

The question is: Do you think the Navy should have killed them or simply just disarmed them (with of course the chances of the captain dying)?

Poor people on rickety boats can easily abduct cargo ships( and one of their victim was US cargo ship) ... what's ridiculous!

I don't believe that what happened is a mere piracy issue ... I see another piracy under the table.

You'd be surprised:

The pirates are very good at what they do.
They run sophisticated operations using the latest hi-tech equipment such as satellite phones and GPS.

They are also heavily armed with rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47s. The pirates are known to receive tip-offs from contacts at ports in the Gulf of Aden.

They use speedboats with very powerful outboard motors to approach their target. Sometimes the speedboats are launched from much larger "mother ships" on the high seas.

To actually hijack the ships, the pirates first use grappling hooks and irons - some of which are even rocket-propelled - and climb aboard using ropes and ladders. The pirates have also on occasion fired at the ships to scare them into stopping, so it is easier for them to board the vessel.

The pirates then sail the hijacked ship to the Somali pirate hub town, Eyl. There, pirates usually take the hostages ashore where they are normally well-looked after until a ransom is paid.

Exactly, that's why I think there's another (serious) piracy under the table. Those poor pirates are just pawns.
