If I can safely identify it as a corn snake or a ball python, snakes which are often kept as pets, I'd probably try and pick it up, because I'm foolish like that. Snakes are awesome though. They're so much fun. Unlike most pets, which just sit in your lap like a bump on a log, when you hold a snake it curls around you and moves and it's constantly moving, tightening, curling. It's interesting and fun, like a living toy... Ok, now I just sound bizarre.
