I prefer subs... Although when I first watched anime on TV here, they were raws. And through that, I taught myself some Japanese, by guessing what they were saying xD But now I prefer subs.

Dubs for some shows are okay. But most of the dubbed shows I've seen... are not very good O_o

I've seen some really good DUBS - DOMINION TANK POLICE (the first one),
GITS, a few others can't remember.

That's why I don't understand why most of it is no good. And is it only US seiyuu that are so poor? Someone mentioned German Dubs were good. I wonder in what way?

Oh, and the same for Japanese dubs - a lot are no good. I just saw Charlies Angels DUB on tv last weekend. Really funny. Yet, Prisoner of Azkhban DUB was well done.
(again on TV. I don't voluntarily watch dubbed things)

Raw or Sub just feels more authentic/true to the story for me.

Subs,
1. I can understand what they're saying, hence subs>raw
2. I can still hear the Japanese, which makes it more authentic, hence subs>dubs

Plus, dubs are rubbish
with the exception of Pokemon
and even that's better in Japanese (apart from the themetune of course, I don't like the Japanese one)

Subs for the win!

Subs usually, but I would prefer RAW if I understood the language more. >_<

Although, some anime I've grown up watching in English, like Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, and Inuyasha, so I prefer these dubbed. ^^

^ I agree. RAW really help learn the language.

I don't watch dubs except when I was younger and watched Sailor Moon on tv. Now I prefer RAW or Subs.

I pretty much agree with the majority here... if I understood the language, obviously I'd want the raw, but English is the only language I'm fluent in... so subs it is.

If it is live action, it MUST be subs. No dubs. The show is much better when you hear the the voice that matches the face.

If it's animated... If I can choose between a subbed and dubbed version, I'll take the subbed, because the original voice was the way it was meant to be heard by the original producer. It's at it's most "pure."
However... if the dub is all that's available, assuming it's not poorly done (or I haven't seen the subbed version first so that I don't realize it's poorly done), I'm usually pretty easy. I saw Fruits Basket with my roommate and she wanted to watched the dubbed version, and I liked it just fine. Only later did I see the Japanese version, and honestly, there were quite a few characters I prefered in English. It's really a case by case thing.

One thing that's fun though... they're terrible 99% of the time, but fandubs can be a lot of fun. More so to voice in and make than actually watch... but it's fun to see a different person's take on a character than what you're used to... also makes it easier to multi task when you don't have to keep your eyes glued to the screen to read the subs.

I will admit, I was a painfully slow reader up until last year when I started watching lots of dramas and anime... now I'm pretty good. Those subtitles can train you pretty well.
