For amazing artwork, my top picks are:

ME and the Devil Blues- by Hiramoto Akira(its on mangafox and the artwork is awesome!)

Bride of the watergod-manwha( the art style is just so beautiful. Like really beautiful.)

Vagabond- by Inoue Takehiko( love his art style!!)

Agreed with all of you who say that Berserk has fantastic art.

Disagreed with everyone who says that Vampire Knight has good art. Damn fangirls.

Its hard to pick 5 manga singulary, because if the manga artist is great, all their work will be great. In no particular order:

1. Nana- Ai Yawazawa is just amazing. I mean she really puts an extreme amount of detail in her characters, the background, their colors, the food. Although its killing me I can see why she went on hiatus to pursue her passion of designing clothes. I mean her work is meticulous.

2. Ayane Ukyō- Desire Climax, , she doesn't save the soft pretty faces or scenes for special moments, she's pretty consistent throughtout with all the gorgeousness. Same with-

3.Enjoui Maki- Hapi Mari.

4. Yuu Watase- I haven't read past Zettai Kareshi as I think she's currently drawing a shounen-ai, but all her is beautifully drawn.

There's a lot more manga-ka's that draw exceptionally well, but those are the only ones that I can think of right now. I look for consistency, and not obsessive use of chibi, or deform. I find that most of the ones artwork I enjoy tend to be more josei than shoujo.

Oh and that's only 4, and if I had to pick someone off the top of my head, I'd have to say Fuyumi Soryo. Her wondrous work Mars is what sucked me into manga anyways.

It may have a somewhat....fanatic following...but I think Matsuri Hino draws really beautiful. The anime I couldn't get into, but the artwork in Vampire Knight is pretty good. And not just her splash pages which are extraordinary, but the entire chapter.

I must be spoiled then. I've read Vampire Knight, and while her art is okay, it seems a bit conventional to me. It reminds me of so many other shoujo artists out there. Again, I could possibly just be somewhat unfair, because I grew up on things like CLAMP (early CLAMP), Naoko Takeuchi, Yuu Watase, Miwa Ueda, Ai Yazawa, etc.

Actually, now that I think about it - Hino's art DOES remind me of Miwa Ueda.

Haha I can't see Hino's looking like Ueda's, but a lot of current josei's work looks like hers. Hmm, no wonder I like them. How could I forget Miwa Ueda on my list and she's still active too.

And I can see where you're coming from. Those artists are distinctive and rarely will their work be confused with another artist or be compared for similarities based on being unconventional alone.

People, we are judging art, not story plot. Fruit basket was amazing but the art was all over the place.

-Strobe Edge
-Kuroshijuji
-Kamisama hajimemashita
-Yamamoto Zenjirou to Moushimasu
-The Sleepy Residents of Birdcage Manor
