NOTE- This tournament is to vote for your favorite characters, not those who you think fit your definition of "moe".
The International Saimoe League has annually set up year long tournaments, where voters choose from 64 candidates the most "moe" character, since 2002. Over half of the candidates have considerable fanbases and have performed well in previous tournaments to be automatically entered into the tournament, while the rest go through of the tough screening process and preliminary rounds. This is serious business.

The format of the regular season is a 64x64 round robin tournament where characters are matched up in head to head matches. For example Hinagiku Katsura Vs. Haruhi Suzumiya. Each character will face off against every other character at least once, resulting in 63 matches in the regular season. The 63 matches are divided into 7 periods with 9 rounds per period and breaks in between periods. There will be 32 matchups per round, where in each matchup voters choose between two characters or not vote at all. Voting lasts for 24 hours, starting at 8:00 A.M. Eastern Time. There will be either 24 hour or 48 hour breaks between rounds to tally up votes.

Ranks are determined in order:First by Wins. If they have the same amount wins, then by Strength of Schedule(the total number of wins multiplied by 3 plus number of overtime wins, finalized draws, and overtime losses), normally it's still the same due to the rarity of overtimes and draws. If they are still the same, then by the sum of defeated opponents Strength of Schedule. Fourth by sum of Strength of Schedule of all opponents faced.

After the end of the regular season, the top 16 candidates will enter the postseason, where the real winner will be decided. It is a double elimination tournament where candidates must be defeated at least twice to be knocked out, and only one will come out on top.
Here is last year's postseason bracket so it's easier to understand.

Voting happens at this site: http://www.internationalsaimoe.com/index.php
Here is a link to picture showing all the candidates this year, their series, and their ranking thus far. The picture is so huge that I can't upload it. http://www.internationalsaimoe.com/statistics/maps/space_topaz_07.png

Well anyway, I made this thread to gather more support for Hinagiku. Although she is a top-tier candidate, she is still behind the other top tier candidates and doesn't seem to have a great chance of becoming #1. The tournament is now in the the third period and Hinagiku has lost to last year's winner, Fate Testarossa, and Fujibayashi Kyō from Clannad. There are only 2 undefeated characters left: Fate Testarossa and Haruhi Suzumiya. This is not a duplicate because this is specifically for Hinagiku, and the thread for Saimoe is general and pretty much dead, because who is gonna look up moe in the threads? I take it for granted that "Moe" means awesomeness in a cute package.

To keep this thread alive, you can post about various things such as who you think or want to be the top 4, obviously with Hinagiku as your first choice.
My choices are 1)Hinagiku 2)Saber 3)C.C. 4)Yami. Obviously these are the results that I want.
Or your thoughts about what's with the locations for each matchup, do they even matter?
Or rant about how there are six characters from Clannad and six from Kanon.
Or say how sad it is that Evangeline MacDougall is one of the strongest characters from Negima and yet her she only has 1 win so far.
Or the results of certain big matchups.
Etc., Etc.

I will post the results of important matchups of Hinagiku's against potential top 16 candidates here, with the standings at the time, series their from, and votes received:
Aquamarine Round 3 : Hinagiku Katsura (2-0) 1002 Vs. Holo (1-1) 923 (Ōkami to Kōshinryō)
Aquamarine Round 6 : Hinagiku Katsura (5-0) 1336 Vs. Tsukasa Hiiragi(4-1) 1014 (Lucky Star)
Aquamarine Round 9 : Hinagiku Katsura (8-0) 1078 Vs. Testarossa Fate (8-0) 1256 (Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha)
Winner of Aquamarine Period : Tomoyo Sakagami (Clannad)
Runner Up : Haruhi Suzumiya (The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi)
Topaz Round 3 : Hinagiku Katsura (10-1) 1449 Vs. C.C. (8-3) 1311 (Code Geass)
Topaz Round 6 : Hinagiku Katsura (13-1) 1425 Vs. Ichinose Kotomi (12-2) 1255 (Clannad)
Topaz Round 9 : Hinagiku Katsura (16-1) 1183 Vs. Fujibayashi Kyō (17-0) 1350 (Clannad)
Winner of Topaz Period : Yuki Nagato (The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi)
Runner Up : Shana (Shakugan no Shana) / Haruhi Suzumiya (The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi)
Amethyst Round 3 : Hinagiku Katsura (18-2) 1821 Vs. Sakura Kinomoto (14-6) 1338 (Card Captor Sakura)
Amethyst Round 6 : Hinagiku Katsura (21-2) 1384 Vs. Suiseiseki (15-8) 1607 (Rozen Maiden)
Amethyst Round 7 : Hinagiku Katsura (21-3) 1323 Vs. Saber (20-4) 1508 (Fate Stay Night)
Amethyst Round 9 : Hinagiku Katsura (22-4) 1494 Vs. Haruhi Suzumiya (26-0) 1599 (The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi)
Winner of Amethyst Period : Suigintou (Rozen Maiden)
Runner Up : Haruhi Suzumiya (The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi) (Again )
Sapphire Round 3 : Hinagiku Katsura (24-5) 1290 Vs. Rika Furude (21-8) 1346 (Higurashi no Naku Koro ni)

Upcoming Matches
June 12th Round 6 : Nagisa Furukawa (Clannad)
June 15th Round 7 : Mikuru Asahina (The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi)
June 19th Round 9 : Kagami Hiiragi (Lucky Star)

Are you people really Hinagiku fans? For her to have lost her last four tough matches, three of which were against those lower in rank than her, is ridiculous considering the Hina-centric arc that Hayate no Gotoku!! is in right now.

Oooh, that's gunna be a close match this Friday. If I remember correctly, both were in the top 8 in Saimoe 2008.

Kinda disappointed at how badly the Touhou characters are doing. Sure, the fan-made anime only has a single episode, but still. Not a single win for Patchouli, only a single win for Aya and Marisa, only 6 for Remilia Scarlet, and 8 for Reimu. How could Patchouli not get a single win? Where be's all the Touhou lovers?

Supporting Maria, Katsura Hinagiku, Illyasviel von Einzbern, and Sakagami Tomoyo, in no particular order.
Sadly, it doesn't seem like Ilya and Maria will be able to move on at this current rate, especially since Maria's opponents in the early rounds of Amethyst are Suzumiya Haruhi and Fujibayashi Kyou.

It's a bit early to guess who will be in the top 4 at this point in time.

And Toronto is the only Canadian location? TORONTO? That's on the other side of the country from where I live. WHY?

Just what is your definition of "moe" anyways? For me, it's confusing to see Haruhi in a moe contest, when the only definition of moe I know is a direct quote from Haruhi herself. This is from the Haruhi light novels, when Haruhi first introduces Asahina Mikuru to Kyon. "I said Moe! The factor to turn people on! Basically, most detective stories have some characters that would turn people on and cause them to be pitied."

So, if we go by this definition, there's zero sense in calling Haruhi or Hinagiku "moe", because those two don't have any attributes that would cause them to be pitied. Of course, the things that turn people on vary from person to person, but the way I see it, moe is a definition of big-breasted, puppy-eyes girls, who give off an "please protect me" aura. Characters like Hinagiku and Haruhi deserve a more fitting definition.

I'm not entirely sure what is the definition of "moe", but going from the contestants of this tournament, it most likely not haruhi's definition seeing as alot of them are strong characters. I guess you can term "moe" as cute, popular, female characters that you think are awesome, and I take it that they should be under 18 years of age, although C.C. is much older than that. But none of that really matters, because the point of this tournament is really to vote for your favorite characters, not to vote for who fits the term "moe" best. Understand, it doesn't really matter what you think "moe" means.

actually what demolisher said is mostly correct, though moe isn't only just limited to that category though one of the main requirements is that the character turns you on.

basically the character must have character depth for people to empathize with which turn people on, or it must have so much awesome cuteness/eccentricity that it beats you into submission.

by looking at the list majority of the characters are popular not moe.

and to quote

But none of that really matters, because the point of this tournament is really to vote for your favorite characters, not to vote for who fits the term "moe" best. Understand, it doesn't really matter what you think "moe" means.

then it should be named vote for your most favorite characters.

god i hate it when all the geek industries hit mainstream (although kudos for them raking in the bling) nearly every term has been skullrape into a different meaning while the ill inform pass on a different terms to the next gen of geekdom.

sorry bout the rant but there's still one more thing to get off my chest.

the whole deal about moe becoming a synonym for a favorite female character kinda pisses me off. I'm way too old and sarcastic to be affected by simple cuteness/fanservice and whatnot, so I get pissed whenever I see these overcute, fanservice-oriented female characters. I want to like the characters of my favourite series, because they have great personalities or have a good part in the storyline, not because of their 3 sizes.

It's a minor detail in the overall picture but... Using moe as a synonym for favourite female character is kinda like saying: "you can only like female characters that are too cute, you're not allowed to like weird female characters that are not overly cute. "

now that I've ranted enough bout the difference between my preferences and the mainstream/or whatever, I'd like to say that Hinagiku would have deserved my vote. I might be using this term in wrong way, but like her Tsundere side. She acts like a tomboy and still expects people (especially Hayate) to treat her like a girl from time to time, only to later realize that she's been the baka. (japanese form of idiot, often used in more softer meaning that it's english version.)

I hate to say this but you fail if you think Hinagiku has no attributes that would cause her to be pitied. Besides, what's moe about Hinagiku is the flexibility of her personality. There are times that she is tsundere (and tsundere is considered moe), there are times that she is the model (and model characters are considered moe too), there are times when she is frail also. But the best thing of all is that even with such flexibility, she never has the fakeness that annoys me. Unfortunately, that fakeness can be found in Mio of K-on.

By my point of view, it goes like this.

K-ON episode 1 : I have the impression that she is like Kagami from Lucky Star. Her character appealed to me back then.

K-ON episode 2 : We knew that she is quickly embarrassed. That is why she never wants to play the guitar. Her character appealed more than the first episode

K-ON episode 3 : Same as episode 1.

K-ON episode 4 : The only serious character in the club (or so she thinks). This is where she began to fear even a shout from a radio.

K-ON episode 5 : It even aggravated to fear from a cut of a finger. Even Ritsu commented "AGAIN!?".

Mio's development is starting to become annoying. It makes me think that she never really has any personality at all. And the author just put a certain characteristic for Mio to sell. It will sell if it became more cuter. Yes, scared Mio is cute. The only problem is that Mio is somehow affecting the jokes in the series from funny to downright annoying. I feel like I never really know nor understand what the hell is Mio's true personality. She can be both (there are lot of characters like that). However, the storyline and Mio's personality just feels very unnatural. It is where you feel uncomfortable at Mio's "I didn't hear it. I didn't hear it" joke with a switch to a very serious Mio.

It is actually different from Hinagiku. Since Hinagiku is actually a very rational character. She is not the one who weeps in the corner saying "I didn't hear it. I didn't hear it.". Of course, we exempt the case of her altophobia since it is a true fear of her (Unlike Mio's fear of everything). That way, it is a lot easier for her personality to be understood.

Anyway, I just downloaded Shizuka Itou's (Hinagiku Katsura) HiNA CD. I should have brought it last February.

all this useless conflict over one word that's not a even proper 1. It's just that we all seem to have different concepts of moe, so of course we can't come to an agreement.

Bryllenogotoku, I wouldn't pity Hinagiku, no matter what, or then it's just that you and me have different concepts of pity as well. My feelings towards her (this sounds like i'm talking about a real person, curse my broken english) vary from admiration (towards her model side, like when she told Hayate to run after nishizawa in that valentine's day ep) to "awww, that's so cute... you're such a tsundere " Hmm... maybe some1 would interpret that as pity, but I usually find myself laughing when i watch her, and for some reason, I think pity is a more negative emotion than that.

Looks like Hinagiku will be able to stay high up in the rankings of the tournament for the rest of the tournament. Maria and Ilya have no chance at all now with their current standings. 30s are okay, but it's not enough. Tomoyo is definitely going to be one of the other top 8 contestants.

I am currently unhappy with the standings. Maria is so low. Maria needs more votes. Same goes with Ilya.

Anyone know how they choose the contestants of ISML? I know that Saimoe is for all the characters that have appeared in an anime within the past year or two, but how does ISML pick the contestants? I'm quite confused about why some characters are in it. If I remember correctly, Chobits is what, from 2004 or so? Does ISML care about when the anime was from, or are characters nominated, and the characters with the most nominations in?

I will try to go into detail about the nomination process.
It's on the voting site but i will try to simplify it.

Requirements-Candidates must represent an anime series, those from 18+ are not allowed. There are no restriction on air dates or length of series. Character must have sufficient air time within series.

There are 48 guaranteed contestants before the tourny even begins. The Top 16 of the previous year, candidates that were winner of a period who have at least 32 wins, candidates who won or tied in Korean Best Moe(a different tournament) in the 7th round(8 matchups), candidates who won or tied in a group final match of Anime Saimoe Tournament of Japan(another tourny), characters who won or tied in Korean Super Best Moe(Why Korea has two tournaemnts, I don't know) round 5 or round 7, and characters who have at least 32 wins in the previous year during the regular season. If the the number exceeds 48, then there will be an order of priority based on the ranking system.

For the last 16, voters nominate up to characters from a huge list by allocating points of 10, 8, 6, 5,4 ,3 ,2, 1. Each point value can only be used once. Voters can only nominate once. The top 48 characters who received the most points will then undergo a preliminary round. They are divided into groups of four, with voters able to vote only once in each group. After a 24 hour voting period, the characters with the most votes in each group are entered into the regular season and the remaining are reshuffled into groups of four. the process is repeated until there is a full roster of 64 candidates.

Ok i didn't simplify it at all, but it's all here.
