Not very often. But, if I want more insight on characters or plot that I feel might have been left out of the animation, I would consider picking up the books. For example, I have started buying the Higurashi series. I also have been reading the Full Metal Panic! & Shakugan No Shana light novels.

It usually depends on the series. I started reading Bleach before I started watching the series but then once the fillers started to roll in I jumped back to the manga. Same thing happened with the naruto series (got sick of the fillers). However I actually have come across a few anime that are nothing at all like the manga and have in turn despised the animed series for butchering the manga and loathe those who think its amazing...cough cough...trigun...

Most of the time.

If I like the anime, I'll normally check out the manga. Most of the time I'd read the manga, but only if the art style is good, and I can accept it.
Otherwise, I just stick with the anime.
For example, I love the Clannad anime, and wanted to check out the manga. Of course, as soon as I saw the cover and read the first 4 pages, I stopped. The art style just wasn't right for me.

Many times, I'll also start watching an anime because I've read the manga series. Air Gear is an example of one that I watched because of the manga.

Sometimes, cause one I've watched it, I kind of get this lazy feeling to read it all over again even though I know there's probably going to be something different. XD
