wait, people still get arranged marriages?

Based off what I seen, its more common to see this in Japan, Asia, China.

But I am solely going off simple knowlege I acquired recenly.

Its a good thing, if the man knows he won't be getting any any time soon. (Don't ask how I know this.)

It's "normal" in my culture, I suppose... however I'll be damned if I partake in such a life-threatening ritual

Since it's something i'm not accostumed to it seems weird to have arranged marriages. I'm not against them either, I just think that people should have the right to choose who they want to spend their lives with.
It's very natural to think this way when one comes from a very individualistic culture, but other cultures do not focus on the individual, instead they focus on the benefit of the group. IF an arranged marriage would benefit both families, then I'm guessing the person would be encouraged and honored that they could unite both families; benifitting both sides.
Arranged marriages however are definetly not for me!!

I don't think arranged marriages are a bad thing. Personally, I think it's archaic and I wouldn't go for it but I have a lot of Indian friends (the engineering department in college was just filled with Indians) who have had arranged marriages and their marriages seem to be moving along well. I guess it works for some people, not others. I've been told by my Indian friends that arranged marriages are more like dating services these days. You meet a girl and date her for a bit b/f deciding if you want to risk marrying her.

Well in some cultures... the father of the bride has to pay the man she is going to marry her... before the wedding actually occurs ... In other cases, the parents of the bride.. might in fact influence... the other party for economical reasons... In Arabian countries, the husband has to provide the brides family with a sort of payment... sometimes her weight in gold.. before proceeding with the arrange marriage... Would you mind being married to your first-cousin?... that means your aunt/ uncles children... yuck... that what usually happens if the bride cannot find someone suitable to marry...

Unfortunately, my parents are selfish for setting me up with a guy I`ve never met.

It`s normal in my culture.

I don`t believe in arrange marriages though.

I`ve tried talking to my parents about this, they think it`s for the "best."

I don`t know how it`s for the best though.

they're bad, they don't always work out. I don't see the point in them. Parents shouldn't be the ones deciding their child's future. That just means they are never willing to let go.

lol i suddenly remember ranma XD so many arranged marriages there.

Depends, on the reason we have to marry each other i guess. if its really serious, then maybe. but if its something stupid like a loan or something, no way!
