Haven't you realized by now that all the news does is over exaggerate everything and pull the emotional card on people?

Well... South Africa was colonized by the Dutch and British for a really long time and even after they still dominated politics and stuff. I mean, they had apartheid and didn't let Blacks hold any kind of important gov. post until the 90's I think. So not to knock African people or anything, but obviously foreigners played a big part in getting South Africa to look like that.

And the country is going down the tubes right now. At my school, almost half are kids whose parents immigrated from South Africa in the 90's because the crime rate was unbelievable, living in houses in gated communities surrounded by 20 ft walls wouldn't even help. There's a lot of issues where they rank way up there statistically, like murder, burglary, rape, assault etc. And (according to the South Africans at school), there's a lot of bitterness and resentment towards white people there (who could blame them?) so its not such a welcoming place anymore.

I really hope they can pull it together for the World Cup in 2010...

Africa is poor...ummm no. Let me say this again : Africa is poor without including north Africa (Algeria,Morocco,Egypt,Libya ect....)

Anyways, you're right all they need is education, but how can you get education when you can't even go to school? Have you ever went there? School is something the majority of the population can't afford. School materials "le tablier" books, lunches...whatever....And the few who do go to school and DO (not everyone) leaves the country for a better life,work... But then after some couple of years they regret it. The kids usually dont go to school because they need to help the parents, take care of the grand parents (grand parents stay with the family of course) and get money. So school is a waste of time.

Africa has SO many young people that could change that continent, but the politicians there just dont care about their people. It makes me mad!

You're absolutely right, it seems that everyone around the world loves to praise Nelson Mandala for what he did in South Africa, but all he did is skyrocket the crime rate after he got rid of capital punishment. People would literally get their car jacked and shot in the head at any random stoplight in the middle of the night, it was scary as hell to live there for 4 years. Although that was 8 years ago, I'm not sure what is happening right now in South Africa or how the economy is doing. The original intent of my post was just to show a side of Africa that most people don't know about.

I think that small villages need to get sewage systems. Furthermore, the people should get educated, and given the opportunity to work.

I have no idea what's keeping them down. But I don't have any interest, either. I've sent donations there before but that's all I've done regarding Africa.
