enough with tha spamming! this is a good topic, so I'll add my two cents. Its not that an anime show is lacking, its just that we have become more picky viewers. when were little, it didnt matter if a show was good or bad. we watched it anyway. we tend to idolize shows when we're kids. But as we grow up we make better choices and learn about new things.

i grew up watching many different shows, way different than whats on now, just for fun ive rewatched those old shows on you tube, and somehow it was more interesting in my childhood memories than what ive seen now. the show has lost some of its impact... the nostalgia is my memories of watching it.

so if you think a show isnt as great as it was back then...think about this, ask your little brother or sister this question....what is the greatest anime (or program) ever? the kids now will say Naruto, One Piece and so on. but for you it will be something different....

10 years ago pokemon was king on tv..... all of you who were very young and watched it will think that that was the greatest program ever. but that was 10 years ago! (Im 26 and I could care less about pokemon) if you were 8 years old back then, now you would be 18 or so, thats why its so hard to convince others about what the best show ever is or if shows arent as good as they used to be.

10 years from now what will people say about the shows we watch now? younger kids from that time may say that Fruits basket is a dumb old show, Death note is lame, and such and such. they may post the same topic were having now.....is something lacking?

We aren't spamming, we simply went off topic. Make the difference between those 2.

And what you said seem to only apply on North America...
One Piece isn't that popular in America.

actually, i don't feel something's lacking in the new animes nowadays. true there are overrated animes that i can't believe became popular, but there are actually good ones still.

for me, what makes an anime good are the beautifully constructed plot, the genius of it's originality, the characters that you get to know, and also a bit of the drawing.

i suggest thinking of these while watching animes, because usually, if it lacks one of it, that's when i think something's lacking

I know it's the popular thing now to bash on Naruto, but it's hard to ignore the impact and significance it has in the anime industry. To many newer anime fans Naruto was the first anime they ever watched and was the series that got them hooked. It's one of those few shows that come by once in a while that actually increases the popularity and awareness of anime to the mainstream, like DBZ and Sailor Moon. I'm aware that Naruto fans don't always portray a positive image for other anime fans, and just because a series is popular and makes money doesn't mean it's the best series, but I think it deserves more respect than it gets from the "sophisticated" anime fans.

Now on topic, I think that the worst trend in anime right now is the adaptation of JRPG's to anime. The opening post mentioned the deterioration of RPG story lines and now we get those old tired stereotypes and story arcs in our anime. The first example that comes to mind is Tales of the Abyss. I've never played the game so I can't sat whether the original story was that bad, but the anime bored me to absolute tears. The story might be decent but the pacing definitely didn't translate to a good show.

I'm sure you can predict my displeasure when I checked the spring 09 line up and saw that 4 of the new animes were based on games.

i agree, some of the new animes now can't compare to the classics but there are some of them that are really good.
an example of this would be Code Geass. it catches the attention of the viewers with it's characters, plot, and twists.

hmm...i'll disagree....i like the current animes now like
d.grayman, katekyo hitman reborn, eyeshield21, kyou kara maoh, etc.....
they have a good storyline and competent charcters..
ranma 1/2 is a good anime, it's actually really funny but if i'd compare it
to the current ones. i'd definitely choose the latter...

each to his/her opinion...

yup i think the level of anime's more improve today
the plot is more complex and creative
and generally new ideas and information are being applied.
