Well.... if School days is anything too cry about is a very interesting question, and I guess the answer will strongly vary by who you ask... I got slightly spoiled before episode 8, and was sitting with a jawdrop, shaking and shivering while watching the last episodes... and also I felt crappy, days after having seen it. Even now (a couple of months since I saw it) I get melancholic when I think back on the series... So it had an extreme impact on me, an impact that is yet only matched by grave of the fireflies (though in my opinion grave of the fireflies is in a much higher class than school days)
But if it is anything to cry about... I guess it depends on the angle of view, age and how empathic and sympathetic the watcher gets towards the characters... personally I get very emotional when watching anime... I don't think I actually cried this time, but I got tears in my eyes that resulted from a total crash of emotions. Actually I can't find the right word to describe the feeling I had after watching it, since I haven't felt anything like it before... So it certainly has something...
As for calling the guy pathetic and so on... Yeah he did pathetic things, but having morality flaws is much more common for a human than being as perfect as the protagonists in most animes I've seen, sometimes only with one or a couple of stereotypical flaws that after a little hardship is resolved. In some cases real life also ends as bad as in this series. I've read a lot of critique towards both school days and also grave of the fireflies (which do have a little bit in common), and it seems to me that many of the people that are criticizing, lacks the ability to look past the mistakes done by the characters. Both in grave of the fireflies and School days, it is obvious that the main characters aren't as perfect as other characters in most animes or tv shows are presented, and because of that, many people don't manage to sympathize with the characters. I know it's harder to sympathize with a imperfect character than with a perfect one, it goes for me as well. But having characters like that makes a series far more realistic.

And BTW, If you have watched Naruto or animes like it, one could ask another interesting question in relation to this though... do you ever feel sad for any of the bad guys in those series after learning the reason they became bad guys or after they realize their wrongdoings, no matter how much bad things they have done? Here's what I think: Since the bad things they have done gets "excused" for by the explanation or by the fact that they realize what they did wrong, the viewer somehow looks away from the flaws, and the character appears perfect enough to be sympathized for... Also things get even more emotional when one is hoping for a possible happy ending

Very well told and I agree with everything you said cept for one thing -I find it easier to sympathize with a imperfect character than with a perfect one because I can relate to them more ..But I agree with you the character's on schooldays went too far with thier actions and they had the choice and that's why so many ppl can't sympathize with such character's ..

I do sympathize with perfect character's but they are not realistic at all ..

As for school days itself-the anime is realistic but unrealistic at the sametime ,the writer had an idea ,moral lesson that he wanted to present -these kids had an unlimited sex life and they are no rules ,no teachers and parents around and in that scene I think it's unrealistic even though these things happen in real life but they are rules and limits .The fact that the character's are flawed and that these things do happen in real life because the anime is not your happy romance makes the anime more realistic ..

sekai is the culprit -_-
why would she made makoto and kotonoha together, then after that she fuck with makoto?
makoto was also indecisive, why would he still want sekai while he have kotonoha? really, that bastard <_<
so i think the victim is kotonoha.

hehe i usually cry when like someone's dog dies or something or something bad happens, but school days was plain horrible -.-"""""""""" didnt cry at all but poor sekai...but i thought it would be a nice anime >.< because the name school days...you would think it would be some cheery love story that has a happy ending and talks about someone's "school days", the first 2 episodes did seem like that but from that point on it just got a whole lot....
