Cantonese independence?
|
Do you people think the cantonese can govern themselves? Do you think its very viable?
To be honest, I think canton and china the culture is vastly different. For one our dialects are miles apart. Cantonese use traditional chinese still and mainland switched to simplified. Plus, mandarin speaking and cantonese speaking chinese do not get a long. I honestly think canton can govern itself. Unlike taiwan, our people actually deserve independence. Mandarin speakers should stick with mandarin speakers imo. I know its bad idea, but its still up there. |

The cultural difference isn't a viable reason for separation. There are many other factors in effect when it comes to the rise of a nation which includes the economic strength, strength of the military, and the integrity of the government. The ones with any power in present society are the upper class (look at the American government; private banks OWN the federal reserve, they head of treasury is a lobbyist, CIA, FBI, the entire white house is run by lobbyists), and seriously it wouldn't be in their interest to separate due to cultural differences. IMO a separation would lead to extremely serious matters (economic crash would be a very likely finale to a separation).

Well it doesn't matter. I'm not chinese anyway. I'm american. ROFL
I'm just get annoyed when everyone expects me to speak mandairin. Don't chinese and westernerners know chinese speak other dialects or maybe even english. Annoying! I doubt there would be economic crash. HK did fine without china for a long while. Watch if shang hai, hong kong, and canton went into business. The rest of china effing poor! |

bs, this will only create another civil war within china. China have fought itself for thousands of year and it needs to be unified. I myself is a cantonese and i do not believe guangdong should separate. Even if it were to lose the cantonese language/culture for the greater deed of the unification of China, it shall be done.

That's the silliest thing I've ever heard. The culture is mainly similar throughout China, only language and dialects are different, not including those minority groups.
Also, Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Guangzhou aren't the only rich places. Beijing, Shenzhen, Taipei, Chongqing, Hefei, etc. are already more modernized and are better off than many other places in the world. Then there's the fact that the Guangzhou region wouldn't even want to be separated. The name China is itself a symbol of unity in many different ways. We're all Han descendants (well, mostly). |

No, you're not American, but Chinese-American, purely saying you're an American would mean you're a native of the Americas, did your ancestors came here to the US since colonial times? I don't think so. Yes. I do think the Cantonese are capable of governing themselves, they're partially doing it right now aren't they? But in this economic crisis, it's wise to stick together, or else....... |

stupidest thing i've ever heard. I know you're ignorant about China, but let me tell you, all provinces and areas in China have different cultures. There are 56 minority groups in China, not to mention 30something provinces and various cities with their dialects such as shanghainese and wenzhounese. Do you seriously think that China should separate into a hundred pockets of weak governments?
How does that benefit anyone? Isn't America a mix of different people with different cultures? Why don't we split it up too? How about the Chinese side of New York City as a country and the Italian part of Chicago as another? Ridiculous Idea. Cantonese are treated no different than any others. It's pointless fighting over it, splitting just because they're different. But from what I know, other than their language, there's not a giant gap between Cantonese and Mandarin China. I know because my family is from Hong Kong and I know for sure we're a part of the Chinese culture. If the blacks and whites can tolerate each other with such a culture gap, why can't the chinese that speak different dialects? At least they have the same values and look the same.... |

It's also a stupid idea to say that China should be governed the way that America is right now. China will only be ready for full democracy when it it fully developed, or it'll only be a hindrance.
Also, concerning your 55+ minorities, they compose of less than 10% of China. Cantonese call themselves Han as for most Mandarin speakers. Most Cantonese speakers I know speak Mandarin also anyways. Cantonese or Mandarin, we're all Chinese and our ancestors all share similar histories. |

Do you think Taiwan deserves to seperate? I think not. With independence comes the realization that you now have to fend for yourself, and i'm not sure the people in Hong Kong want that.
Though it would make an interesting war: Taiwan (R.O.C.) vs. China vs. Hong Kong. And remember: Just like how the R.O.C. cannot be part of the U.N., if China refuses to accept Hong Kong, it cannot be part of the U.N. |
