Then shall China give the Miao people independence on their whims? They do classify as an ethnic minority, and has more reasons for a seperate country than Cantonese speakers. How about Teochew speakers like myself, whose language is far less related to Mandarin than Cantonese? Shall they have independence as well?

Wow I've noticed that Cantonese and Mandarin do not get along. Like at my school, they pretty much all hate each other. Most people say the Cantonese are better, but Im not sure. Lol. But the Cantonese do have HongKong... even though there are some mandos there.

I do not believe that something as petty as language will seperate a nation. Is there really a big enough difference in culture for the two? No, Is there a great schism in language? Not really. Politics? Not at all. How does any of this cause mutual dislike? My Chinese school in Chinatown taught Madarin and Cantonese!

Cantonese, superior? Hah! You surely jest! In the Los Angeles Area, if you compare the smaller, Cantonese speaking Chinatown to the much larger predominately Mandarin speaking San Gambriel-Alhambra area, you would find that Chinatown seem much more 'ghetto'. I doubt that waaay superior people keep their homes in shoddy and sad state.

Mandarin is the language of the future, the lingua franca of the Chinese community, whereas Cantonese will soon die off within fifty years in the overseas community.

I feel it funny that you say this, because it is a suggestion out of mere opinion, you should do a little reach before you start to citizen other “partial sovereign” nations.

Like the fact that mandarin became the national language because there was a majority of the speaker, aka it was more universal then Cantonese, (that already says a lot), and beside why become a sovereign state, just because you speak a different language, and like you state “mandarin speakers should stick with mandarin speakers” …..the bigger picture is that either Cantonese or Mandarin, you’re still Chinese, and dialect doesn’t make it big in the consideration of getting international support to becoming a “sovereign state”

Do you people think the cantonese can govern themselves? Do you think its very viable?

To be honest, I think canton and china the culture is vastly different. For one our dialects are miles apart. Cantonese use traditional chinese still and mainland switched to simplified. Plus, mandarin speaking and cantonese speaking chinese do not get a long.

I honestly think canton can govern itself. Unlike taiwan, our people actually deserve independence. Mandarin speakers should stick with mandarin speakers imo.

I know its bad idea, but its still up there.

o wow.........what little ignorant ideas of ethnocentrism can lead to .......

its quite funny, because speak mandarin, read and write both traditional and simplified and have way more Cantonese friends the mandarin speakers, .........so your little thought is just another fallacy that you have chosen to fall into, and i hope there is a bottom to it so you can climb back out, instead of to just keep falling.......

get real it just a dialect and languages die every single day, and there is not exception for Cantonese either, nor mandarin, but it'll still last longer.........

Usually, because all they can think about is China this, China that and can never think about the country they immigrated too. And whenever we're in class they start talking and its loud. I mean really loud.
