I speak Mandarin and can understand a smidge of Taiwanese.

Both my parents (Born and raised in Taiwan), older sister, and grandparents (Mom's mom = Born + raised in Taiwan. Dad's parents + Mom's dad migrated to Taiwan) are fluent. My older brother can understand it but can't speak it

Yeah, I think Taiwanese is spoken more in Southern Taiwan, (Dad is from Southern Taiwan, Jia yi, and Mom is from Northern Taiwan, shin chu) My dad can speak it fluently, but my mom can only understand bits of it, and barely speak it. I'm Taiwanese-American, and I can speak/understand Mandarin (can sorta read it, barely) but I never bothered to learn Taiwanese since only my dad speaks it, and I suck with learning new languages.

i voted in my mother's behalf. she speaks Taiwanese to her family, but besides that she speaks Mandarin to ALL other chinese (mainland and taiwan). Taiwanese is her true native tongue, but she speaks some damn good Mandarin. She also speaks Hakka, though rarely. Taichung pride WOOOOO!

its not, as far as i know. seperate dialect. my mom speaks Hakka, Taiwanese, and Mandarin, and she tells me they're all different. Hakka is more like a regional/cultural dialect. Taiwanese (or Min Nan) is/was spoken by the entire island (i say was because it seems like younger generations dont necessarily know theyre Taiwanese that well). so yeah it isnt. i guess Hakka is an other? lol

I can't speak Taiwanese at all, since I moved to Canada at 3 and a 1/2, and neither can my sister. Exposure to English has stunted my Mandarin speaking skills. My parents, grandparents, and all older relatives in Taiwan can all speak Mandarin and Taiwanese fluently.
In fact, my mom used to only speak Taiwanese and couldn't understand Mandarin when she was a child, and was subsequently beaten by her teacher.

Taiwanese is a mixture of the Min Nan dialect and Japanese (thanks to the Japanese occupation). So if a Taiwanese person speaks Taiwanese, in say, Fujian, people won't really understand him.
