According to legend, Saiunkoku was once infested by demons who threw the country into turmoil and made the people miserable. A brave young warrior named Sō Gen gathered together the eight Enlightened Sages of Colour and drove away the demons.

Sō Gen then forged the nation of Saiunkoku and became its first emperor. After Sō Gen's death, the eight sages disappeared, but according to legend they still exist among the people. A beautiful shrine was built for the Eight Coloured Sages; it still stands within the Imperial City.

Saiunkoku had always been divided into eight distinct provinces named after colours of the rainbow. Six hundred years ago, the Emperor commanded that the ruling family of each province change their names to match the province they ruled. Commoners were forbidden to share the same family names as nobles.

Each province in Saiunkoku is ruled by a noble family of the same name. All eight provinces and families are named after colors.

* Ran (藍, Ran?, Blue) — The most powerful clan in Saiunkoku, although they play a dormant role in the political issues of the country.
* Kō (紅, Kō?, Red) — Equal power to that of the Ran clan. Along with the Ran clan, the Kō clan is known to be the 'highest of nobility'.
* Heki (碧, Heki?, Green)
* Kō (黄, Kō/Ki?, Yellow) — Although pronounced the same as the 'Red' (紅) clan, the kanji (黄) means 'yellow'.
* Haku (白, Haku ?, White)
* Koku (黒, Koku ?, Black)
* Sa (茶, Sa?, Brown) — Known as the least distinguished clan in Saiunkoku, main estate in the Sa Province.
* Shi (紫, Shi?, Purple) — The family of the Emperor

Oky but their also a legend in the early episodes of season 2 that "There will come a time that someone will once gather again the colors & will become there new leader. (something like that) & the why I see it there might know more of the colors at least who they are....

One the subject of Sages: Yeah, I thought they were implying that there are three we know so far.

I'm really curious about Kouyuu's past. Reishin took him in, but we don't even know exactly how old he is! And what happened to his parents? And why doesn't he like women? I mean, he says something about them doing "unnecessary things," like Kourin trying to help out Sa Enjin, but we never know what happened to him so that he feels this way . . . sigh. He's one of my favorite side characters. I hope he gets a happy ending, and I want to know more about him!

i got some info from wiki, not realli wat ur lookin for tho

It's been revealed that Kōyū's reason for taking the Exams and climbing to the top was to stand by Reishin's side and pay him back for everything that he did. He also wanted to be acknowledged by Reishin, but was frustrated by the older man's cool and callous exterior.

He thought that Reishin adopted him on a whim and wondered whether any of his efforts made a difference. He has since realized, however, that Reishin thinks of him as his own child and that the plum blossom, after which Kōyū Ri is named, is Reishin's favourite.

The Hong family (specifically Shōka Kō's younger brother in episode 19) intends to marry Kōyū to Shūrei to lead the Hong clan in the future.

He said his reason for adopting Kōyū was that his older brother adopted a child so he wanted to adopt a random child to share his brother's experience. Although, Shōka revealed to Kōyū that Reishin thinks of him as his own child. He's good friends with Kijin since he's allowed to be around him when he's not wearing a mask.

n dis is wat i think
