Why do people pair two people that dislike each other as same sex couples in anime (In Yugioh fanfiction/doujinshi, Jounouchi and Kaiba are a populare pairing)? I understand a close friendship between two guys or two girls that's of a sisterly/brotherly/parental type would be viewed by fans as a yaoi/yuri relationship? Now Konohamaru's yuri and yaoi Sexy Jutsus could have fans thinking that. I honestly wish Kishimoto hadn't put this in the manga because I just find it comically revolting.

More: Guys like Sasuke Uchiha are essentially this: potentially asexual guys who are more concerned with things like revenge or whatever rather than girls. Just because a person in anime/manga doesn't exactly portray interest to the opposite gender doesn't automatically make them gay. Yet Sai and Sasuke are frequently paired with other Naruto guys! The infamous SasuNaru kiss wasn't intentionally done by the two. Naruto fell off the desk and it was an accident.

Even more: Why do people occasionally do incestous yaoi/yuri? I find that wrong.

Finally: I don't understand why are shounen series common in yaoi? I have seen a site online that alludes to Quatre and Trowa of Gundam Wing having subtexts of BL. From what I have read, Saiyuki has lots of shounen-ai undertones.

im not a fan of either, and i dont understand why some ppl like it...and i probably never will understand it, not that i care too much anyway.

don't really care it's called fan fiction for a reason, it's for the fans that like it. If you don't like it then you don't have to look at it just like most people don't look at hentai of herto couples of anime charters but that's just my point of view

I don't see what's wrong with incest, yaoi, or yuri. "Awkwardness" does not make anything wrong so it is not really a good excuse.

Oh you ARE a little bundle of neuroses aren't you? Why? Hmmmm. Why? How about this.... You are watching entertainment produced by a DIFFERENT CULTURE THAN YOU OWN!!!!!!! One that comes without the psychological mindf#¢k of 2 thousand + years of Christian-Muslin-Jewish-Insert-organized-religion-of-your-choice-here garbage.

Do you know the difference between Religion and Spirituality? Do you? (Don't strain. It's a rhetorical question.)

Now, I'm sure that you have a pathological need to be a good little Ameri-fascist and impose your own provincial idiot thoughts on the rest of the planet, but here's something for you to consider...

Sex is a normal, healthy part of the human condition and from a personal, emotional and, yes, spiritual standpoint... it does not make one shred of difference to the rest of the universe if the person is the same sex as you or not.

As to the incestuous (which is the proper spelling, by the way. read a book.) as to the incestuous material you find so objectionable, any first year college anthropology student can tell you the long and varied history of such things. IN FACT, and I know this will twist your head, the ONLY REASON such laws were made part of cultural taboo is that the more intelligent members of the community understood the danger of reinforcing dominant recessives (you know, third nipple, flipper- hands, like most of your neighbors in their double-wides).

Of course, as a proud American, you know that sex and love and complex emotion all take a back seat to glorious, glorious violence. Gushing blood and exploding heads and car chases and lets not forget hypocrisy and torture. All good wholesome fun.

So. there you are. I find that sort of thing funny. and entertaining... sometimes touching and heartwarming. And while we both have equal rights, my liking this stuff does not effect you in the least. You trying to stop or censor it does effect me.

true. if it were acceptable, the fact that it leads to genetic defect could lead to the downfall of people. an example would be the tudor line of england royalty, who pretty much killed themselves off through inbreeding because it caused poor health and made it near impossible for them to have children.

word of advice, try not to be so condescending. makes u look like an ass. although most of what the OP said seems to stem from ignorance.

Quite true. But the genetics problem only statistically happens 1/5th of the time. There were other solutions and many cultures made use of them.

My POINT is, that making it a taboo, or more importantly a "sin", was another way for organized religion to grasp a culture by it's throat.

My POINT is, Japan has an entirely different culture, has had for thousands and thousands of years. and the idea that some reactionary, opinionated bumpkin has a better handle on life than an ancient and learned culture just does not sit right.

And the yuri thing is just an extension of how Japanese have always behaved, older girls guiding the younger and having deep emotional, although chaste, relationships.

Although it seems to be the two guys thing and the incest thing that has you and kadmos1 really sketched out.

Some advice? Join the rest of the world here in the 21st century. it's really not that bad.

Sorry, but I have spent way too many years being polite and empowering jackasses like him.
Believe me, if I sound condescending, it is because I am.

The last thing I am worried about is if some backward Luddite in Hannibal, MO thinks I am an ass.

kadmos1 to your first question, there is a bundle of answers.Same with the other stuff you said. I'm going to give it a shot with explaining stuff calmly but really your post comes of as quite ignorant.

kadmos1 wrote:

Don't people do the same with straight pairings of a guy and girl that hate each other? Answer is yes. Pairings often find fan support because people see something there. With characters that dislike each other there usually is some sort of tension that comes from their mutural dislike, which can create some people liking the idea of those two as a couple. Another thing is that the "love story" where two people dislike each other but then develope into a couple is not an un-used one. You can find it in many books/tv shows etc. Thats because there are many people that like the hate turn to love stories. There are also people that like stories a bit darker where e.g. the 2 characters might dislike each other but are attracted to each other. And again, there might be people that just in general think those 2 characters together could make a good/and or interesting couple - which is the most often a reason imo why any ship "is created". There are more reasons for why people might ship together two characters that dislike each other. I think you should keep in mind its done in all 3 possible gender combonations. Its not an exclusive thing to yuri/yaoi.

kadmos1 wrote:

Again, isn't the same thing done with "straight" friendships? Answer is yes, and if you think of why you would already have the answer why the same is done with friendship between people of the same sex. E.g. Rukia/Renji from Bleach got a decent fan following, despite not really having been portrayed as more than friends. Why is that? Imo its because of many reasons, the two biggest from my PoV are that people see something between them they can interprete as romantic instead of just friendship and/or that they feel like they would make a great couple. There aren't many real couples in shounen animes (tbh I can't think of any - it seems like the cardinal rule that couples must only be hinted at or be one sided), so actual couple are left up to the fans interpiation.

Yes it wasn't intentionally done, but if you look around there are probably animes where a guy and girl shared an accidently kiss and then later it turns out they liked it or something like that etc etc. People can do the same with Sasuke and Naruto, thats the thing about fanfiction/shipping, you aren't restricted to what is shown on screen. If you like the idea of character A with character B, then you can write about it, and other people that like the idea of those 2 together can read about it.

Shounen series got tons of guys usually. At least the guy to girl rotatio tends to always favour the guys - some more heavily than others. Its no wonder that with a lot of guy/guy interacting/relationships in a series, that there are many yaoi pairings. Another thing to keep in mind, there isn't really a lot of yuri/yaoi animes/mangas around. Let alone good ones. Can you think of any good shounen yaoi anime/manga?

Overall consider the idea that people could only ship pairings that were shown as a true couple in anime shows. Oh my that would really drop the amount of ships being shipped. Many animes/mangas have characters that many people think would make an interesting couple despite not being shown as that. Then there is also subtext. I.e. the show hints at it but doesn't really show stuff. I doubt you are aware of it but fanfiction was created due to subtext. I.e. people seing something that wasn't "completely" shown but it just smelled miles away like romantic feelings. In "the birth" of fanfiction it was actually two male characters from Star Trek iirc. There probably was others posting stories here and there before, but 4 differen't articles I read that touched upon fanfiction and its creation all credited that FF as the kick off.

This turned out to be a bit of a mega post so Imma halt myself here and hope I gave some reasons for why people might ship the pairings they do. There are more reasons then the ones I gave and its just from my pov as someone that likes girl/girl and boy/boy pairings. Though in short I think you can conclude - imo - that pairings are made in general because people like the idea of two characters together and/or there is stuff in the shows/mangas that can be interpreted as romance. Something that imo is universal i.e. not just restricted to yuri/yaoi pairings but also straight ones.

Wow, kadmos1, you sound like one of those potential bible-thumpers that try to push the 'homosexuality is a one-way ticket to hell' mentality. And no, before you ask, I'm married with a kid. It's just that I've been reading (hooked on actually) yaoi for several years. Yuri? Yeah, it's the opposite of Yaoi, but I'm not into it; it's like most females not trying to look at girlxgirl porn, but the guys obviously dig it.

Take Fable/Fable 2 for example: When the first one was out, I was explaining it to a co-worker. When I told him you can try to get with guys as well as girls (the first one only had you as a male character, the 2nd you can choose what sex you wanna be), he promptly told me to stop telling him about the game, that was the most disgusting thing he'd heard. I was surprised how the tone of the convo turned to say the least. I told him if it makes him feel any better, I had my character flirt with the opposite sex, the guys were harder to woo. But he was hearing none of it.

My point? You like who you like, love who you love. Would I feel an attraction to another chick? Hardly. But if another person were to tell me of their preferences, I would not condemn them to hell, or anything like that. I write fanfiction myself, and it's a lot of fun, really. Like Beautifully Malicio said, people like it because of the freedom of one's imagination (in a nutshell). There's even a thing called 'crack pairings', pairings of any two characters that are highly unlikely. People write them. People enjoy them to read, they're a wonderful escape, I think, if they are written wonderfully. And frankly, being stationed here in Japan, like GIRv2 said, it's a totally different culture from the US. Like take the onsens (hot springs/baths) for example: Can you imagine being naked in front of total strangers, bathing/soaking in one bathing area? (the sexes are separated, so don't worry) Well, that's what they do here in different spas around this country. To be honest, I actually went to one for the experience, and it's like sitting in a huge tub, but no suds; you wash up before you get in to keep the oils and lotions off your skin form getting into the water.

Same could be said for views of sex here...I've never seen a vending a machine that sold porn/toys until I came here...crazy, huh? But I've seen one. There's even used panties that get sold in them, too. Yeah, there's lots of undercover pervs here. And frankly, as far as hentai in video, and esp. in manga form, I've seen some stuff that would probably make your toes curl and your skin crawl. These fanfics are nothing compared to those...

So, like Cecil said, it's called fanfiction for a reason...if you don't like, don't read/go to websites that have them. Don't read said stuff and then gripe about morals and whatnot after the fact. It's for entertainment like GIRv2 said.
