Park Min Young & Jung Ryeo Won Casted For Princess Ja Myung Go | 2008. 10.03

Park Min Young and Jung Ryeo Won could be playing as sisters of an ancient kingdom known as Nangnang-guk in the 50 episode saeguk drama “Princess Ja Myung-go” scheduled for broadcast on SBS television in February 2009.

Park Min Young has been casted as Princess Nangnang while Jung Ryeo Won has been casted as her elder sister, Princess Ja Myung Go.

“Princess Ja Myung-go” is based loosely on a historical Korean love story (recorded in Samguk Sagi and other texts) between Princess Nangnang and Prince Hodong of Goguryeo. Nangnang-guk had mystical wardrums that would sound in advance when rival nations attack them. Numerous attempts by Goguryeo to invade Nangnang-guk was thwarted. Goguryeo wanted to conquer Nangnang-guk as it was a buffer nation between them and Buyeo.

Prince Hodong was thus sent undercover into Nangnang-guk to destroy the wardrums. But he meets Princess Nangnang and falls in love with her. Goguryeo soon mounted another invasion and for her love, Princess Nangnang destroyed the wardrums enabling Goguryeo to conquer Nangnang-guk with ease. But in the aftermath of the battle, Princess Nangnang perished, dying in the arms of a grieving Prince Hodong as their love was never fulfilled. Princess Princess Ja Myung Go who also has a tragic love story will be revealed in the drama.

Both Ryeo Won and Park Min Young went through the scripts on the 29th of last month at SBS Ilsan production center and gave positive reviews. But they have not decided or confirm on their participation yet with the production.

Princess Ja Myung Go Interviews + Pictures | 2009.01.17

There were many doubts initially on whether Ryeo Won was in the drama or the female lead, since she hardly appeared in any photos and it was all about Park Min Young. But that was only because she joined the filming late because she had to work on the post-production of her movie Wandering Mr. Kim which had been delayed. So we are starting to see more Ryeo Won photos now.

Ryeo Won revealed in an interview, “I thought that I would never film a period drama ever in my life, but I am now actually filming a fighting saeguk drama now. I have been eating a lot recently so that I can be in good shape.

I heard that you need to have great acting skills and endurance to film a saeguk drama. So I once said to myself, to never ever take on a saeguk drama. But Princess Ja Myung Go, I felt like it was tailor-made for me. I didn’t need to pick the drama for it just came to me automatically. The character and life of Princess Ja Myung is very similar to mine and I just felt that it was for me.”

Ryeo Won actually lost a lot of weight (5kg) while filming for her movie Wandering Mr. Kim because of her role. But for her new drama, Ryeo Won is now doing a lot of sports and eating tonics to beef herself up in preparation for the fighting scenes. Ryeo Won expressed, “After filming, I would go with my manager and order some meat to eat before returning home. There’s a saying that goes ‘Rice is the best medicine’ and so I am eating a lot recently.”

Ryeo Won also spoke frankly about her friendship with Daniel Henney which started from the time when they filmed the drama My Name Is Kim Sam-Soon. Daniel Henney had dropped by to visit Ryeo Won on the 12th at the set of Princess Ja Myung Go and took some pictures which the latter uploaded to her Cyworld with the caption that Daniel Henney was a comfortable friend.

Daniel Henney and Ryeo Won Are BFF

Ryeo Won said, “Daniel shocked me when he came to the filming set recently. 4 years ago, we would rehearse lines from our scripts with each other, but now I am the female lead of a big production. We kept laughing while still in disbelief that this is happening. Daniel is still very modest and sincere. We gave each other pointers and actually we often contact each other on the phone.”

Ryeo Won conlcuded, “I never quite understood the heroine’s character initially, who could give up on her love for the greater good. I was quite agonized after taking on the role also. But after watching the Dark Knight movie, I felt that love is only a supplement for a hero. I also familarized myself with some fighting moves after watching Hong Kong period martial arts movies.”

Ryeo Won posted the following pictures on her Cyworld of her character Princess Ja Myung and Princess Nak Rang (Park Min Young). They might appear to be rivals in the drama but off it, they are probably developing a good friendship. Park Min Young has been leaving comments on Ryeo Won’s Cyworld while Ryeo Won has been grabbing pictures off Min Young’s Cyworld for her own. It’s great for fans that they update their Cyworlds very frequently.

Behind the Scenes

In an interview, Park Min Young talked about how much she wanted to challenge herself after reading the Princess Ja Myung Go script. She regrets that she didn’t do much for her single-act drama Return of the Gumiho last year and was just reading off the script. For her role as Princess Nak Rang, Park Min Young has become much more diligent and hardworking, picking up fighting, horse riding skills, etc for a better potrayal of her complex character.

Princess Ja Myung was discarded by her nation, Nangnang-guk since she was young but she was the divine one who was bound by destiny to safeguard her nation from enemies. After lots of suffering, she makes it back home but falls in love with Prince Ho Dong who is already married to her sister of the same father but different mother, Princess Nak Rang. But for her country, she has no choice but to plunge the sword towards her beloved Prince Ho Dong.

Park Min Young plays Princess Nak Rang who was showered with lots of love from her parents. But she is prepared to sacrifice everything for her love, Prince Ho Dong played by Jung Kyung Ho. An ambitious and tragic character.

Min Young was also very grateful towards Ryeo Won, “No matter how you look at it, Ryeo Won is my senior with much more experience than me, but she is very modest. She doesn’t treat me like a junior but as a fellow actress on the set and takes good care of me. I am very thankful.” Min Young also revealed that she had received a text message from her good friend Jung Il Woo, “Both of us have picked saeguk dramas with lots of episodes. We hope that everything goes well and encourage each other to do our very best.”

‘Princess Ja Myung Go’ Gets Delayed to March | 2009.01.30

Due to some foreseeable and unforeseen circumstances, SBS has decided to push its 50-episode historical drama “Princess Ja Myung Go” to March.

“Princess Ja Myung Go” was scheduled to debut on the 16th of February under the original plan but was later rescheduled to 23rd of February as SBS decided to air New Year special programs this week. However, due to the addition of 4 episodes to MBC’s “East of Eden” and the unprecedented popularity of “KBS’s “Boys Before Flowers“, SBS has made a decision to push its “Princess Ja Myung Go” to mid March in order to avoid direct competition with the current two of the most popular dramas.

But since the 20-episode “Terroir” will be ending in February, there will be a blank period till the broadcast of “Princess Ja Myung Go”. The plans for this blank period is still undecided though.

I would say this is a wise but much expected decision made by the manangement of SBS. Having to fight both “East of Eden” and “Boys Before Flowers” at the same time is suicidal.

Park Min Young Revealing Bath Scene Attracts Eyeballs | 2009.02.07

Bathing scenes seems to be a normal occurence in saeguk dramas nowadays. In recent memory, Goo Hye Sun in King and I, Moon Geun Young and Moon Chae Won in Painter of the Wind, Jang Hye Young in Return of Iljimae. This not only ensures that the drama will make headlines but the actress too.

Pictures of Park Min Young in a revealing bath scene for Princess Ja Myung Go has indeed attracted lots of eyeballs after being released recently.

The filming for Park Min Young bath scene took place in mid-January at SBS Ilsan production center with only a handful of staff filming the scene including director Lee Myung Woo, camera director Yoon Dae Young and the lighting director.

The bathing scene that was filmed on that day happened in the aftermath of the mystical wardrum being destroyed by Princess Nak Rang (Park Min Young). But in her fierce fight with Princess Ja Myung (Ryeo Won), Princess Nak Rang got slashed and sustained a wound near her upper right breast. The bath scene which ensues sees her maid attending to her wounds. By releasing these pictures, SBS hopes that more attention can be drawn towards the drama when it finally airs in March. These pictures are indeed very revealing.

Rest of the bath scenes.

Princess Ja Myung Go was supposed to air after Terroir which ends on 17th February in the Mon-Tue timeslot. But SBS decided to postpone the airing date after some discussions and in its place will be edited versions of 2 dramas written by acclaimed screenwriter Kim Soo Hyun back in 2000 and 2004 respectively. The edited versions will cover 4 episodes in 2 weeks.

Although SBS has claimed that it hopes to bring some degree of warmth to viewers in these difficult times through the high quality works by Kim Soo Hyun, analysts believe that they are only trying to make sure that Princess Ja Myung Go will face less formidable competition from the onset of its debut.

Love Triangle in Princess Ja Myung Go

It is only wise of SBS to postpone the airing date so that Princess Ja Myung Go will not be left in the dust by the established viewership base which competing dramas KBS Boys Before Flowers and MBC East of Eden already posseses.

SBS has poured lots of money into this 50 episodes saeguk drama and the opening ratings (not always so though) usually decides the future of the drama against its competitors. To make sure Princess Ja Myung Go gets maximum exposure, this was a decision that had to be taken. So with that in mind, Princess Ja Myung Go will make its debut on 9th March instead.

Jung Ryu Won Soaked In Icy Water | 2009.02.09

SBS “Princess Ja Myung Go“, which is set to air its first episode on the 9th of March, recently filmed the scene of Jung Ryu Won soaking in the icy water.

During the filming, Jung Ryu Won, who plays the leading role as Princess Ja Myung herself, was dressed in a simple white dress with the companion of 4 maids and guards.

After she shouted “Fighting!”, Jung Ryu Won began to dip herself into the icy water in the gassho position (palms together and fingers pointing upwards in prayer position). The entire filming area was surrounded by onlookers wanting to catch a glimpse of the set. After Jung Ryu Won got out of the water, she kept repeating “It was really cold” and was quickly covered with thick blankets by the crews to warm her frozen body.

It is known that this practice of entering the water in gassho position is a test set by King Daemusin of Goguryeo (played by Moon Sung Geun) for Princess Ja Myung to “cleanse her body”.

It is really isn’t easy to be an actor. Besides rushing for schedules and getting sleepless nights, they still have to perform daunting tasks like this as required by the plot. And are those layers of melted ice floating on top of the water? Brrr~~~

The directors notes...

Today 1:00 p.m. staff script reading. Ep 29.
Today is the day we film the scene where Ja Myung, who has been raised in a chinese circus as Bbuku, finally meets her mother Mohaso.
Like we always have, the whole acting staff and director came together for a script reading.
At the scene where Mohaso finally meets Ja Myung... Sung Rung Kim (the actress for Mohaso) got caught up in the scene... and during the reading, she had a hard time saying her lines.
The mood quickly became somber... and our hearts felt heavy.
This is the best moment as a director.
This moment is also the reason for Mohaso's character... And while acting out that scene, because she was so caught up in the moment, she started to cry, displaying the perfect emotion [for the script]

That afternoon, in the recording studio... we were able to perfectly film that sentimental scene between Ja Myung and Mohaso who displayed the perfect emotions.
This moment is the happiest time for a director.

At the end of the scene, I had to fight the tears as I yelled "cut".
This scene will air next week, and I am eager to see that scene once more.

I wish I could show it to you sooner.

Ja Myung Go is reaching it's 30th episode.

The humid summer weather is coming upon us. I hope we all can endure the tiresome heat.
