In a broken down apartment for one family lived a sad family. It wasn't even a rel family. There was a man, couldn't have been called much of a father. Having adopted three kids was a stupid decision. He went out and drink and anything would set him off. Grades were the biggest issue in the family. The oldest, Taisk, didn't have time to worry about grades. Yet he managed to keep it above a C, As and Bs mostly. Being 18, he was part of the gang; 'The rats'. He had been shot at twice but both were only flesh wounds. Since he was in a gang it made their home a target for drive by shootings. If he wasn't he couldn't protect his younger sisters.
Slia maintained a C average and loved to read. Harold, the man who adopted them, thought of this as a waste of time. Most of her books are hidden from him because when he finds them they end up in the fireplace. Taisk made sure they were hidden because Slia was a bit forgetful about those things.
Another adopted was Bree, but she'll come in later and you'll learn about her.

Slia sat near the dirty window, watching the rain hit the glass. Her short jetblack hair stuck out at the ends giving it a bit of a shaggy look and her face was covered by her bangs. She pushed them back with her fingers and looked closer out the window. Her heart was in a state of panic. Where was her big brother with the food?
Suddenly the door opened with a boy with black shaggy wet hair yelling, "YO!"
"Taisk!" she jumped off the tattered old sofa. Dust flew slightly as she walked across the flithy floor to him. Pulling his backpack off she asked, "What cha steal?!" with excited eyes. Slia had always been impressed with Taisk's skill of stealing.
"I...took," he mumbled. He didn't like to steal but it was the only way they could survive. Harold wasted all his money on boose and gambling. "Some spagetti," he handed her a plastic container with pasta, cheese, and sauce in it.
"My favorite! What's for dessert?!"
"Cheesecake."
"You're the best, onii-chan!" Slia hugged him. Then she ran out of the room and into the kitchen. The loud humming of the old microwave could be heard.
"BREE!" Taisk called, "I brought your favorite too!" He dugged through the bag.

Bree nodded from the couch, standing up and walking over to Taisk, taking the omelet, and flashing a small, not normally seen, smile. With her being the youngest, her grades were still higher then everybodies. All A's. Her short striaght blonde hair bounced when she walked, but her attitude towards everything was faded, and insecure. Her twin brother had been taken away, how else was she supposed to feel? He was apart of her. She had loved to sing... only Harold had practically forbidden any humming, let alone singing. She also knew how to play the piano... but...well Harold had no time for music. Bree mostly kept to herself, except for Slia and Taisk. Whom were real brother and sisters. They still made her feel as if she had their blood running through her vains. She gave a quick hug to Taisk, letting him know she was very thankful. They knew she didn't talk much, which was a plus for her.

Taisk smiled back at her then asked, to Slia, "Where's Harold?"
"Where else?" Slia replied, coming in. The hot pasta was in her hands. With a chewed up plastic fork she dug in, "Out drunk I suppose... the damn bas-" She stopped when the door opened. Everyone's heart in the room skipped a beat and the man stepped in. With tired, cold eyes Harold walked in from the rain and across the room.
"Slia your book," Taisk hissed at her, nodding towards the sofa. Quickly, Slia sat on her book. She never made eye contact with Harold, never. Slia had been the first to live with Harold. Taisk came later because he had been injured and couldn't stay with her. No one knows what happened during those two months alone with Harold. But she never made eye contact with him. Never.
Harold left the room, most likely to his own. Taisk finally sighed in relife and pulled out an apple for him. When his little sister gave him a look he replied, "I ate on the way here."
"Tomorrow at school, you're eating." Slia said, eyes darting over her brother. "None of those gang meetings."
"No promises," Taisk mumbled, taking a bite.

Bree stayed silent. She was the last adopted. She sat down on the couch next to Slia, shooting Taisk a "You better eat tomorrow" look, then ate her omelet cold. "I don't very much like those gang people..." She said slowly, taking a bite of her omelet.

(I've got it!! I'm gonna make another character thats not in this family, who ish with Taisk in The Rats.)

"They're alright kids," Taisk sighed, "Just on the wrong side of the town..."
"Like us?" Slia replied, finishing her meal.
"Yeah..." Taisk sighed sadly, "Like us..." A siren was heard and by instint, Taisk turned off the lights in the room. A red, blue, and white flashed by their window. Even after the siren died out Taisk had a cold feeling in the back of his neck. In the dark, Slia watched her brother look out the window sternly.
"HAHAHAHA! STUPID RATS!" A voice called. It was a cougar, another gang. Taisk fumed, knowing it was nother stupid joke but he kept still.
"They're not home, Johnny." A girl's voice whined, "Lets go home."
"Alright babe," a reply came then the siren came up again and died out.
"Stupid cougars..." Taisk mumbled, turning on the light.

[Sweet! Alright then]

(I'm not gonna bring him in untill Taisk goes for a 'meeting' or whatever)

Bree shivered, scooting closer to Slia. "I especially don't like your little best friend... Keith or whatever. He's a bully." She mumbled, watching the window as well.

"Well," Taisk sighed, looking out the window. The sun and moon were their clock. "It's almost time for bed," he reached in his bad a pulled out three pieces of cheesecake wraped in plastic. "Eat up you two then straight to sleep." He didn't say bed because none of them had a bed. Only Harold did for obvious reasons.
In one bite, Taisk ate most of his piece then tossed it outside the window. A rat instantly came and dragged it back to the sewers. Taisk then took out three old blankets from a shelf above where Bree and Slia sat now. Placing them next to them, he wrapped one around himself and sat in his corner. He always slept in the corner closest to the door. Just in case.
"I don't really like em either much," Slia whispere to Bree. "It's scary... kind of like the gangs in my books...." Hopefully no one will end up in jail, or die or something, Slia thought. She always imagned the possibilities of everything. Quickly gulping down the cake she then wipped her mouth with her sleeve.
"Well night," she said, laying on her side on the couch. Bree and her always shared the couch. Taisk took the corner even though both have tried to concince him to sleep one night on the couch. But Taisk was stubborn and no one could tell him what to do unless he felt like it.

Bree noded at Slia, eating the rest of her cake. She wrapped the blanket tighter around her. Even though she hated that Taisk slept on the floor, she felt more secure with him there. Her eyes instantly closed.

The next morning, Taisk shook the two girls. And said, "Rise an' shine girls." When Slia sat up, yawning her hair was awful.
"Comb your hair, girl."
"What' the point?" Slia asked, getting up. Rubbing his head from the akward difference of height she said, "It'll still look messy like yours."
"...whatever," he groaned, tossing his backpack at the door.
"Did you do your homework?" Slia asked.
"May beee..." he mumbled, he walked into the kitchen. On the table it had three seats and each side had paper. His side had paper with blank answers. Grumbling, he quickly jotted down random numbers and stuffed it into his bag.

Bree shook her head and her hair landed perfectly, no need to brush. "Taisk... I can quickly do it for you." She murmered, taking it from his bag, and running the numbers through her head, then jotting down the correct answers. She handed it back to him, smiling.

"Woah... thanks Bree!" He grinned at her.
"Thank her by doing you homework tonight," Slia smirked, stuffing her own finished homework in her bag. It was worn out unlike Taisk's. Taisk loved his backpack, it had been given to him by his father who was in the navy. So he took good care of it. "We better jet 'fore we're late again."
"We're always late," Slia shrugged from the mirror. She finished combing her hair but it still stuck out. If it was shorter and didn't tick out so much she'd look like her brother. She made a face then placed the comb down. "We tacken the public bus?"
"Shoot," Taisk mumbled, stuffing something else quickly into his bag. "They don't want Rats in them busses. Anyway we'd probably die ina crash o' something."
"You're not thinking about taking that gun to school," Slia asked, opening the door.
"Have too... remember last month?"
Slia thought it over and said, "Take the gun but don't take it out unless you need to."
"Promise," Taisk said, raising one hand and crossing his chest with the other.
"I really hate you be'in in a gang," Slia mumbled, walking out.

Bree followed Slia, nodding in agreement. "Taisk... don't tell me Keith is coming with us today.." She said, pushing her hair back out of her bright blue eyes.
Just then a boy in all dark clothes popped up in front of them. "Hey Taisk." He said swinging his arm around Taisk's shoulders. Bree roleld her eyes and edged closer to Slia. Slia was like her big sister...protector.

"Hey Keith," Taisk smiled at him. Then he glanced at Bree's disapproving look. The four of them started walking, slowly. Slia's eyes darted around a bit. Even though Taisk was in the gang, she could spot trouble better. Which was good in this neighborhood. Anything could happen.
"Don't make eye contact," Taik said suddenly, looking straight ahead. "Walk faster..." Of course Slia couldn't help but glance to the side. A group of kids stood together, smoking heavily. They were cougars, no doubt about it. They all had the same leather jacket with a black panther on it. That always made Slia laugh but she didn't this time. She looked ahead.
They heard footsteps and Taisk mumbled, "Not today, not today, not today...." Another siren was heard and Slia looked back.
"It's the man, dude," Slia whispered. A police car drove up to them. They were always stopping Rats. Never Cougars. Rumor was they bribed the policemen.
"Hello Officer," Taisk said, waving Bree and Slia behind him. "What seems to be the problem." The glass was only rolled down to just under the man's eyes. He gave a glare to them then rolled it up. When it drove away there was laughter heard.
"BWAHAHAHA! HERE RAT! CATCH!" one cougar yelled, throwing an emtpy beer bottle. Taisk did it catch it with ease. A gasp was heard from the Cougars. With a smirk, Taisk tossed it as hard as he could back at them. They scattered and ran towards the school. The bottle smashed on the door that was behind them.
Slia then gave her brother a swift kick in the shin. He only gasped softly from the pain, he had had worst.
"Moron! You didn't have to throw it back!" Slia hissed.

Bree still stood behind Slia, an I-Don't-Really-Care look covered her Oh-My-God-That-Was-Close feeling. "Taisk... you only cause more trouble when you do exactly what they wanted you to do, overreact." She said softly.
"I thought it was cool." Keith said, giving Taisk a high five. His shaggy blonde hair fell into his eyes whenever he did a sudden movement, and he always blew it back like it was an everyday thing. It always made Bree giggle as well. Which she did. But this time she had been too close to Keith. "What're you laughing at short stuff?"
"Nothing much, Keith..." She murmered, the slight smile disappearing. She even found it odd that she talked more to Keith then her family members.
"Sure sounded like something Bree." He murmered back, getting that player look on his face. He always got the girls, a lot of them. Probably because he was a 'bad boy' and because...well he was hot. Bree thought about it, annoyed at the fact she even thought to think about it.
"Not really... I mean... if you opened up those large ears of yours, maybe you would've heard me and not have had to ask the question."
They bickered.
