Not necessarily, though most gamers today won't play anything unless it looks "nice"

Most of the games today have nice graphics, but the storyline suffers. Early Final Fantasy games have bad graphics (Good at the time, I guess), but the storyline is great. The newer games in the series have wonderful graphics, but the story can be short and lame.

Final Fantasy 7: not so great graphics, epic story, battle system, music (well I thought so!) and overall brilliant.

Final Fantasy 11: looks pretty, but doesn't even pretend to be anything more than grindtastic. D:

Thusly; Yes, but hardly the main reason you play a game.

It is the move from 2D to 3D which changed the gameplay of recent games. Graphics are strongly tied to gameplay so yeah, graphics
add to the overall appeal of a game.

Graphics =/= a good game. The original Silent Hill looked like shit but it was totally awesome. The newest one had nice graphics but it sucked so much.

Just because the graphics are bad it doesn't mean people won't play it, take a look at WOW I mean their graphics aren't that good but it's based of the graphics of Warcraft 3 and lot's of people play it. Plus don't forget the storyline, a lot of people play the game sometimes because of the storyline or a new game that no one has ever played.

*Don't quote me because of WOW even though I don't play it, it's still good.*

Well it is not just the graphics that make the games better, it is game design. Yes 3-D games are nice and shiny. But people tend to forget that now software companies have over 20 years of game making under their belts. They can make better levels, they have an easier time developing different levels of difficulty, and they can make smarter AI. So overall comparing a current gen game to an older gen game is like comparing the the hardware they run on to each other. Back in 1992, the SNES hardware was the best you could ever get. However, it was not without its limitations and flaws. If you take into account every aspect of a game, and not just the story and graphics. You can see that yes video games are better today than they were 10 or 20 years ago.

Now that is not to say that 10 years ago games sucked, no they were as good as they could get.... ok not 10 years ago 15 years ago. Each of them had their own charms. For instance, difficulty, back in the day games were much more difficult, on an order of magnitude. You put a 10 year old kid into an old school game like Contra or Shockman and they will die and give up. How do you guys think most sterotypes were started about gamers? The difficulty of these games started those sterotypes. These older games had more originality. They were not sequels to sequels to sequels, like we are plauged with these days. You had to be more creative to sell a game. It is not like today where you can package the same game in with better graphics and a few bug fixes. Back in the day people had to come up with new and creative challenges. Finally the games were a great deal more solid than they are today. Because the internet was not there to all people to patch games. When games were developed the developers did all they could to find every bug in the game. And if there was a major bug in the game, you had to pray to god that it would make the game more fun.

So I guess in the end it just depends on who you are. But old school does not really mean better. While old school set the foundation for many franchises today. That does not mean they are better than their current generation children.

No. If games just depended on Graphics and Developers just threw the Gameplay and Story out of the window, we wouldn't have most AA, AAA, and even AAAA games today. Though, most game review sites like IGN and GameSpot drop down scores due to Graphics on games, but sometimes they don't. For example, look at Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars on the DS. GameSpot gave the game a 9.5, and it had some crappy graphics. And take a look at IGN's review of Prototype. They gave Prototype a 7.5 for mainly having some slimmed down graphics, even though they said that the game was fun to play.

Well, although people say graphics don't make the game, the developers should at least try to make the graphics look the best they can. To me, most graphics look fine. However, we should not keep low standards for videogames. If we did, then crappier games would sell more.

Sometimes it either depends on the game or the person playing the game... If the story is so great, some people usually ignores the graphics and likes the game because of the story... Sometimes if the story isn't that good but the graphics is good, some people will like it because of the graphics... But some games doesn't have stories like Counter-Strike so people look up onto the gameplay... Usually, gameplay and graphics are mixed like Left 4 Dead. Left 4 Dead has good graphics and gameplay but most people say that the story is short and bad... I'd say video games are better if the person playing it likes the thing(s) he/she is specifically finding... That's why us people have different opinions on games...
