Well, I'm doing a dissertation for University based on the Internet, video piracy and ethics focusing primarily on the anime industry, and thought Crunchyroll would make a great case study for the cause as it was one of the first sites to legally offer such a payment program and simulcasts.

So, for anime members:

So, why did you get your anime membership? What made you want it? Was HD video quality and early access the main draw for you? What about the ethical side of it? To what extent was ethics a factor in you choosing an anime membership?

Also, how do you feel knowing that certain groups such as Horriblesubs are stealing Crunchyroll content and uploading it elsewhere for free? Do you see that as one less reason to have an anime membership? Will you renew your membership once it expires, or does knowing you can still get the content for free put you off wanting to keep it?

What are your thoughts on these matters?

And for people who aren't anime members:

Do you want an anime membership but can't get one for various reasons, or do you just not want one? If not, why not? Do you wait the one week for simulcast releases to become free, or do you try and watch them elsewhere?

EDIT: Also, for those who don't have anime memberships and watch the simulcast content elsewhere, how do you feel about it? Do you simply not care, or do you feel somewhat guilty about it?

I do not have an anime membership just simply because time does not allow me to watch anime anymore. I prefer a lot of the older anime's which i could torrent or stream elsewhere for free as well. It would just be a waste of money for me to buy an anime membership.

First off, it's because of the Region Blocks; the anime I can watch is limited here.

The HD quality isn't what I would say good, nor bad, but streaming takes a lot of bandwidth. and you'll have more chances of encountering virus. The anime-companies are made to have profit, but fansubbers does it out of freewill, then of course do I support the fansubbers <33

I think that paying I don't know how much for a anime membership, isn't worth it. I'm mainly here for the forums, or have a chit chat with my ''buddies''

Frankly, do I support Horriblesubs, and the people who rip offs the anime here, and uploads it or let us, people who're living in a state which have problems with ''watching anime'' here on crunchyroll, download it.

Screw the anime companies.

Well, I have a monthly bandwidth limit and HD quality just uses up more bandwidth, so that's a bad thing. I'm also in no hurry to watch new releases, so one week isn't a problem. I guess those are the reasons why I don't have a membership.

Edit: Also because they removed the 6 month/12 month subscriptions and I don't like recurring 30 day subs.

With my current amount of anime files in my externals hard drive (5500GB), I believe it is more than enough for a year worth watching of anime. Besides, I don't give crap of the anime companies, the subs fails, dubbing sucks, can't forgive what they did to One Piece -_-

Along those lines, I am starting to watch anime Raw. Not very hard to follow after 3 years of hardcore watching anime. Finally, I'm only here, at Crunchyroll, for my group that made and will eventually move away

I have an anime membership. To be honest I dislike 90% of the anime's on this site. It seems the only one I watch week in and week out is gintama. But I have a good feeling that this site is going in the right direction and that it will get more anime.

I do appreciate free stuff from fansubs but what crunchroll is doing is the best way to get anime across the globe and make sure that someone gets paid. Attempting to sell me DVD's of the entire seasons when I'll probably watch most anime only once is making me grossly overpay. There are only a few animes i have ever wanted to watch more then once, and even then it usually is only a single episode out of an entire season. It is even rarer for me to want to watch an entire show again. So the main difference is paying about 50 dollars for single season of an anime that will never change or pay about 7 dollars monthly for about 7 months of an ever changing venue of anime, It really is no contest to me.

That all being said what Horriblesubs is trying to do is wrong. If they were just doing it for the fact they like anime I wouldn't object to them. But they are uploading CR subbed anime in order to try to run CR out of business. Otherwise there would be no point to them doing this. CR can be joined for free and you get to see all the anime after a week of its release. Not to complain about the shows that this site has or the audience that it attracts, Naruto is one of the main draws of this place and you can wait for months before anything actually happens in that anime. Which because anime's like naruto does very well most anime coming out likes to copy its style, which means that most anime that comes out now-a-days you can wait a year and catch up in one episode.

To sum that all up there is no reason to join another site then CR if CR has the anime. Also to be completely honest there is no reason to pay other then if you think about what CR is trying to do and support it.

wow, that would be a pretty interesting dissertation...i didnt get an anime membership because i can watch practically any new anime release on some other site, if i wanted to. but these days im in no big rush to see them the very day they come out. most times i can wait one week to see a new ep, but if i really wanted to see it, i would just go somewhere else.

I don't have an anime membership because I just don't want to pay the money to just watch anime. Besides, I only watch one or two animes on this website regularlly(sp?).

i dont have one because i dont like any of the shows they are simulcasting, except maybe Reborn!, but i read the manga for that. so...i might think about getting a membership depending on how fast CR's library of shows grows. and if they get anything i like.

I suggest that you try the classic such as Black Jack, made by Osamu Tezuka, the supposedly equivalent of Walt Disney of Japan.

Onto the Horriblesubs case, They are mainly doing it to piss of Shinji. Such specific goal from them, highly doubt it.

However, I got a suggest that would probably help the overall American anime companies... (Though I will never watch it either way)

Funimation has leaked some series episodes before the actual airing. Crunchyroll never had such incident. Why not Funimation licensed series that are being streamed go into Crunchyroll instead...? That way, it would gather all the viewers into 1 place and the security should be perfectly fine. I obviously would think it would be a great idea but profits is their main goal and bla bla bla....

just a few things to add

- One Piece subs will be horrible from how Funimation sub it...

- We should expect Fairy tail to be picked up by Toei eventually, once the amount of chapter is high enough, (if you don't want fillers that is)

- Crunchyroll growth should be expected only in a few years... They should seriously go for underrated series and not the mainstream dammit -_-

- Just wanna add if you saw a time plot hole in Reborn, because I did see one right before the future arc

are they really going to pick up Fairy Tail? That would be great if they did! i just hope they finish it this time. that authors last project, Ravemaster got dropped like a bad habit... sorry to go off topic... i agree that CR should go for series that are not so mainstream...

Nothing is confirmed but because One Piece art-style and Fairy Tail ones are very similar since the author of Fairy Tail was inspired by Oda, it is highly expected that Fairy Tail should be picked up by Toei. Again, nothing is confirmed.

I'll give Black Jack a try.

After reading some of the other posters here I realized maybe horriblesubs is trying to get CR's animes to people in countries where CR has a licensing issue. (I didn't spell licensing right did I?)

It just seemed like taking anime from CR's site and then uploading the anime they ripped off to another site in order to give free uploads was too centered around CR, which was why I at first thought they were attempting to hurt CR.
I do not know if I am expressing what i'm trying to say here too well, if you don't understand it feel free to ignore this part.

I always thought funimation was a place that made the dvd's for anime and they didn't stream it. I just went to their site and I was wrong. But buying each episode for 2 dolloars is too much for me. It just isn't worth it. It is a very interesting game the anime viewer has to play. Either pay those crazy prices for anime or watch one of the few companies, that brings anime to other parts of the world, go down the drain.
Like paying 52 bucks for 26 episode season of monster or Legends of Galactic Heroes is barely fine for me. But I don't like any anime as much as those two.

I really like your idea for funimation and crunchy to get together and plan out a way to stream anime in a cheap and efficient way. But heres the thing crunchy gets their anime straight from the anime companies in japan, and so does funimation. They are rivals. I imagine in the next few years, if crunchy gets backing they will run funimation out of business because crunchy is getting the newer anime's faster, and giving them to us for cheaper.

Also for those that think most anime companies are the bad guys, the anime companies could at any time ask fansubbers to stop fansubbing, and most fansubs will comply. They don't do this because they know it helps them. They know of the existence of people who fansubbed their stuff. Crud all I have to do is go to google and type "Anime Name, fansub" and the first link that will pop up is a group that is subbing that anime.

I know that HorribleSubs only do it to piss off Shinji, after all, they don't really care of what the others thinks of them.

I am quite fond to fansubs, especially Quality ones. I know all my sources through Anidb.net as some people rated the fansubbers for each anime that were subbed by the group. Yet, you do need experience to know which subber is more appropriate for you as some are more literal than the others.

I only bought I think 4 anime DVD, 3-4 episodes for 33$ each DVD -_- talk about being ripped off... Until I discovered by source, I guess it was worth the trouble of spending a nights lurking around the Internet.

My idea would be in one word, Partnership. Funimation should put more effort on the DVD sales and leave the streaming to Crunchyroll while putting advertisement on this same site. It is quite an ingenious idea but seriously, in these time of recession, they shouldn't bother with such rivalry if there is one.
