HI there! Funk you say...?

The JB's and the Meters for some old stuff.

James Brown - Doing It to Death
http://youtu.be/ivzmxOrJN3o - the JB's are (one of) James Brown's backing band

The Meters - Cissy Strut
http://youtu.be/4_iC0MyIykM

And the Daktaris, the Budos Band and Lee Fields for some newer stuff.

The Daktaris - Musicawi Silt
http://youtu.be/-3CB7RssPoM

The Budos Band - Adeniji
http://youtu.be/GLtblepFoBs

Lee Fields - My World

Well, that's the kind of funk music I like anyway. Hope I'm not too late to be that cool guy with good music recommendations!

What about some more traditional action?

Ahmed Jamal, Alice Coltrane, Charles Lloyd, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Jaco Pastorius, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis (obviously), Nina Simone, Sun Ra (for some REALLY expressive music).

Forgot Albert Ayler. Sax-man. Absolutely wild.

Oh right, Bill Evans for modal Jazz.

I think your definition of traditional jazz and mine are VERY different lol

Lol. Not, 'traditional' per se. Maybe just more proliferated.

Down to the Bone is a pretty sick acid jazz band. My grandfather used to listen to then before I stole his CDs.

been listening to mix series by a London-based DJ named Floating Points who specializes in mainly 70s jazz, soul, funk, disco, r&b, and rare groove goodies that definitely need some exposure and sharing
