Jung Ryeo Won’s Sketchbook | 2007.12.14

Actress and former pop singer Jung Ryeo Won is publishing a picture-essay collection.

Similar to singer-actress Park Jiyoon’s photoessay compilation “Secret Garden”, Jung Ryeo Won’s Sketchbook contains drawings and writings that the actress herself has drawn/written.

As she’s a devoted Christian, there are messages that accompany the drawings that refer to her faith. She posted the notice on her cyworld page, and explained that her pictures were drawn purely out of enjoyment: “I haven’t received formal instruction, it’s just that I wanted to express myself.”

Jung Ryeo Won’s Sketchbook is planned to be released in bookstores, but no publication date has been given.

In other news, Han Ye Seul recently gave an interview in which she named Jung Ryeo Won as the star who’s the “best fashionista”:

“She’s also a friend, but Ryeo Won has a certain quality where she can express herself well and find things that suit her. She wears clothes well, in a way that the average person can easily follow.”

I’ve got to agree with the fashion part; Jung Ryeo Won has always struck me with her innate stylishness. She’s not the most traditionally pretty but she always looks great, in a self-assured, individualistic way.

Lots of other stars look good; that’s no big deal since that’s part of their job description. But Jung Ryeo Won always looks really comfortable in her clothing, like it’s an effortless thing for her to throw something on and make it look interesting and fashionable. She’s also the only actor I’ve seen modeling clothing who actually makes me want to wear the clothes.

Ryeo-won and Daniel Henney, still buddies | 2009.01.11

Looks like former co-stars Jung Ryeo-won and Daniel Henney are still chummy, several years after they were cast together in My Name Is Kim Sam-soon, the drama that made them both household names. (They hit it off while filming and even shot several CFs together afterward, thanks to their popularity from the series.)

Henney, who’s back in Korea after finishing filming on his Hollywood debut, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, recently dropped by the set of Jung’s new SBS historical drama, Princess Ja-myung, which is when the duo took the photos.

Jung posted these new “sel-ca” (self-photographed) shots of her and Henney goofing around and making faces on her personal website on the 12th, captioning him as “a comfortable friend.”

Daniel Henney surprises Jung Ryeo-won with flowers | 2009.01.30

Daniel Henney made a surprise visit to friend Jung Ryeo-won to give her some flowers and well-wishes before she shot an ad for her new gig — she’s the new brand model for Biotherm cosmetics (Henney, meanwhile, has been brand model for Biotherm Homme for the past four years).

Pictures had been released last month of Henney visiting Jung while she was working on the set of her upcoming drama, in which she plays the titular Princess Ja-myung, which drew fan interest after Jung then uploaded candid photos of the twosome joking around on her mini-homepage.

According to a source, Jung was “extremely happy at his visit and proceeded to shoot her ad looking cheerful.”

Ja Myung Go kicks off with a whimper | 2009.03.11

So, who caught the premiere of Jung Ryeo-won’s new grand historical series Ja Myung Go [자명고]? (It has apparently dropped the “Princess” from its title.)

…Nobody? Well, you’re not alone — ratings were abysmal (4.1%), considering the months of hype leading up to it.

After trying to maneuver its premiere to evade ratings behemoths East of Eden and Boys Before Flowers, Ja Myung Go’s Monday “special” broadcast pulled in a weak 5.8%. But that wasn’t too upsetting, since specials that air before a drama’s premiere tend to draw low numbers.

But its first episode on Tuesday aired at probably the worst time ever — it had to contend with the ever-increasing numbers for BBF and the grand exit for Eden.

Princess Ja Myung Go Interviews + Pictures | 2009.01.17

There were many doubts initially on whether Ryeo Won was in the drama or the female lead, since she hardly appeared in any photos and it was all about Park Min Young. But that was only because she joined the filming late because she had to work on the post-production of her movie Wandering Mr. Kim which had been delayed. So we are starting to see more Ryeo Won photos now.

Ryeo Won revealed in an interview, “I thought that I would never film a period drama ever in my life, but I am now actually filming a fighting saeguk drama now. I have been eating a lot recently so that I can be in good shape.

I heard that you need to have great acting skills and endurance to film a saeguk drama. So I once said to myself, to never ever take on a saeguk drama. But Princess Ja Myung Go, I felt like it was tailor-made for me. I didn’t need to pick the drama for it just came to me automatically. The character and life of Princess Ja Myung is very similar to mine and I just felt that it was for me.”

Ryeo Won actually lost a lot of weight (5kg) while filming for her movie Wandering Mr. Kim because of her role. But for her new drama, Ryeo Won is now doing a lot of sports and eating tonics to beef herself up in preparation for the fighting scenes. Ryeo Won expressed, “After filming, I would go with my manager and order some meat to eat before returning home. There’s a saying that goes ‘Rice is the best medicine’ and so I am eating a lot recently.”

Ryeo Won also spoke frankly about her friendship with Daniel Henney which started from the time when they filmed the drama My Name Is Kim Sam-Soon. Daniel Henney had dropped by to visit Ryeo Won on the 12th at the set of Princess Ja Myung Go and took some pictures which the latter uploaded to her Cyworld with the caption that Daniel Henney was a comfortable friend.

Daniel Henney and Ryeo Won Are BFF

Ryeo Won said, “Daniel shocked me when he came to the filming set recently. 4 years ago, we would rehearse lines from our scripts with each other, but now I am the female lead of a big production. We kept laughing while still in disbelief that this is happening. Daniel is still very modest and sincere. We gave each other pointers and actually we often contact each other on the phone.”

Ryeo Won conlcuded, “I never quite understood the heroine’s character initially, who could give up on her love for the greater good. I was quite agonized after taking on the role also. But after watching the Dark Knight movie, I felt that love is only a supplement for a hero. I also familarized myself with some fighting moves after watching Hong Kong period martial arts movies.”

Ryeo Won posted the following pictures on her Cyworld of her character Princess Ja Myung and Princess Nak Rang (Park Min Young). They might appear to be rivals in the drama but off it, they are probably developing a good friendship. Park Min Young has been leaving comments on Ryeo Won’s Cyworld while Ryeo Won has been grabbing pictures off Min Young’s Cyworld for her own. It’s great for fans that they update their Cyworlds very frequently.

Behind the Scenes

In an interview, Park Min Young talked about how much she wanted to challenge herself after reading the Princess Ja Myung Go script. She regrets that she didn’t do much for her single-act drama Return of the Gumiho last year and was just reading off the script. For her role as Princess Nak Rang, Park Min Young has become much more diligent and hardworking, picking up fighting, horse riding skills, etc for a better potrayal of her complex character.

Princess Ja Myung was discarded by her nation, Nangnang-guk since she was young but she was the divine one who was bound by destiny to safeguard her nation from enemies. After lots of suffering, she makes it back home but falls in love with Prince Ho Dong who is already married to her sister of the same father but different mother, Princess Nak Rang. But for her country, she has no choice but to plunge the sword towards her beloved Prince Ho Dong.

Prince Ho Dong and Princess Ja Myung

Park Min Young plays Princess Nak Rang who was showered with lots of love from her parents. But she is prepared to sacrifice everything for her love, Prince Ho Dong played by Jung Kyung Ho. An ambitious and tragic character.

Min Young was also very grateful towards Ryeo Won, “No matter how you look at it, Ryeo Won is my senior with much more experience than me, but she is very modest. She doesn’t treat me like a junior but as a fellow actress on the set and takes good care of me. I am very thankful.” Min Young also revealed that she had received a text message from her good friend Jung Il Woo, “Both of us have picked saeguk dramas with lots of episodes. We hope that everything goes well and encourage each other to do our very best.”

Jung Ryeo Won’s Interview | 2009.05.16

Jung Ryeo Won sat down with SportsSeoul for an interview to promote both her current drama, Ja Myung Go, and her new film, Castaway on the Moon. Keep reading to find out how much she weighs and why she sends over 400 texts daily.
Jung Ryeo Won

Jung Ryeo Won

On her personal life:

1. There’s a lot of talk on internet boards saying Jung Ryeo Won ‘is too skinny’ and ‘doesn’t look like she’s even 40 kilograms’. Do you not gain weight? Is there a reason you’ve appeared thinner lately?

It was for my character in Castaway on the Moon. While filming the movie, I truly didn’t want to eat food. Once the film wrapped, I got cravings for food. Therefore, I really eat a lot these days. (Laughs) Thanks to that, I gained a lot of weight. Recently I gained around three kilos so I go up and down between 47 to 48 kilograms. I’ve most definitely never gone below 40 kilograms.

2. Then how do you manage your body?

I really like exercising. I consistently work out at the health club, and these days I’m going out of my mind learning Pilates. There’s no time because I suddenly began shooting the drama. I’m going out of my mind from horseback riding daily. Since it’s a historical drama, there are a lot of scenes on horseback. One day I road without a saddle and ended up with my legs bruised black-and-blue all over. I feel the importance of a saddle these days. Haha.

3. You seem to have many close celebrity friends. You’re close with Han Ye Seul, Park Ji Yoon, and Park Min Young who you appear in [Ja Myung Go] with. Do you think there’s a reason that you’re always surrounded by a lot of people?

Actually, living as an entertainer is a career where you can become acquainted with lots of people or not. I’m the type to [make the first step in] approach[ing others] to get close. Min Young tends to keep to herself so I approached her first. Beginning with text messages, we then became connected through Cyworld, and now phone often. She is such a good dongseng. Because she’s such a lovely child, I/you want to keep being good to her. Ye Seul and Ji Yoon are also among my celebrity friends. We tell each other our personal troubles. Ji Yoon rushed to my film’s press conference holding a bouquet of flowers on a day when she had her own showcase earlier.

4. There’s a widespread rumour that one gets addicted to Jung Ryeo Won’s text messages. What’s that about?

Ah! Everyday I text people around me Bible verses. I’m practically addicted to the Bible. I send the text messages because I want to share good messages with those around me. [Once] in the morning, [once] in the evening. But as the number of people I know gradually increased, the number of text messages I send also increased. Since I send them on a daily basis, I get phone calls if I skip a day, asking why I’m not sending it. This is the addicting effect of Jung Ryeo Won’s text messages.

5. How many people do you send the daily Bible verses to?

The number keeps growing since my acquaintance increase with each production I do. I recently counted 211 people. Every morning and evening I send text messages to 211 people. Because of that my texting fees come out to more than my call feels. I recently changed my mobile phone plan.

6. I’m guessing Daniel Henney is among those people. You send them to him when he’s abroad as well? Besides him, there’s probably some surprising people on your list.

Of course. Henney is a friend with whom I talk about projects and text often. I’m also intimate with Teacher Jang Mi Hee (of Mom’s Dead Upset). (Laughs) Teacher Jang Mi Hee even advised me about Castaway on the Moon. When I first got cast, she even read over the screenplay. She told me, “Capture your character early on.”

7. Is Daniel Henney still not good at speaking Korean?

Actually he understands most things and converses well. However, we usually converse in English when we talk. Since he’s a perfectionist, don’t you think he’ll speak in Korea when he has perfect command over the language?

8. After becoming a genuine actor, I think you occasionally said, “I disliked being active as a singer” and “I will never sing again”. Has there been no change to those thoughts?

Back then, I thought I couldn’t do it no matter what. But as time flows by, those thoughts changed to “If the opportunity arises, I could do it” and “I can sing also – why did I [say] that then?”. Although there probably won’t be a career change to a singer, I think I could sing on an OST for a drama or movie that I’m in. If there’s an opportunity (laughs).

9. To be honest, there’s a lot of talk on [Ja Myung Go's] viewership slump. It could cause distress.

Not at all. When I hear such talk, I think to myself, “What kind of talk is that!? This is just the beginning…”

10. What do you do while resting?

Read the Bible. [Go on my] minihompy. Meet up with friends. But recently there’s been no time to spare from shooting the drama. But I still live with the Bible by my side.

Jung Ryeo Won

On her work:

1. Seeing Castaway on the Moon, I had the thought that the casting was a dream. [The character, Miss Kim,] was free and had a mysterious charm. I felt that it suited Jung Ryeo Won really well.

Doesn’t it? I thought, ‘This is mine”. Everyone will know the detailed contents and why I’m saying this if they watch the movie.

2. Please briefly explain about the movie.

It is the story of a wandering Mr. Kim (Jung Jae Young) and a Miss Kim (Jung Ryeo Won) who is observing him. You will feel warm-hearted.

3. Your first movie in a leading role, Two Faces of My Girlfriend, was an industry failure. I think that’s why this movie is more important.

Yes. What you say is correct. I don’t think people watch a movie just because ‘Jung Ryeo Won is starring’. The production is important. Nevertheless I have no regrets [about Two Faces of My Girlfriend] since it’s a production that I poured all of my energy into. Same with this movie. To be honest, I hope this movie will do well (laughs).

How do you feel about having done a movie with Jung Jae Young, who is often [referred to as] an ‘actor who is blessed with female co-stars’?

Jae Young obba is not an ‘actor who is blessed with female co-stars’, it’s the actresses who work with him that are lucky. I certainly felt that this time. His impression is great and he’s someone who makes his female co-stars shine. If I were to describe him as a food, I don’t know why but, he’s a person like soft tofu stew (순두부 찌개).

Was there a difficulty you faced while filming the movie? If so, what was it?

The cold. I endured almost three months in a thin t-shirt. Since we filmed in the winter, it was extremely cold. Since the line was important to our director, I filmed without being able to stick on any hot packs.

I hear that you have a strong [- almost severe-] disposition while filming.

I think that’s definitely necessary. Because I have to fall into a new character that isn’t Jung Ryeo Won. The character in this movie doesn’t wash much, and as I filmed in only one outfit, I purposely didn’t wash that well during the filming period. Wasn’t my immersion too severe? Haha.

You’re filming a drama these days. How is it?

There’s really no time to breathe. Every day is utterly exhausting. Wielding a knife and flying. Horseback riding is also tiring. But I think the results are worth it. Whether a drama or movie, actors work hard to put together a production like finishing a puzzle. I’m richly feeling the fun of working together.

Since you’re fluent in English, you could enter Hollywood the fastest. Are there no plans?

To speak precisely, I want to say, “There’s no project I want to work on”. There are no plans for now. For the time being, I want to be devoted to Ja Myung Go and Castaway on the Moon.

If there’s no Hollywood project that appeals to you, what exactly is it that you want to do?

I’m speaking of a character role that I like. Hollywood still has a kind of [stereotype] about Asian actresses. Strong and skilled in martial arts… they don’t want a [female Asian] lead, they want a character that melts into the production without standing out. I want to do a production that display the charm and individuality of ‘actor Jung Ryeo Won’, not [just another] Asian actress.

What is actor Jung Ryeo Won’s ambition?

I want to show diverse images. To the extent that you can feel, ‘Jung Ryeo Won has that kind of charm’. I emphasize this again but please don’t judge hastily. I am now a runner at the starting line, prepared to run with all my energy.
