I was having a discussion with my friend the other day and we got to talking how the most logical smart people can have no common sense

Common sense: noun- sound practical judgment that is independent of specialized knowledge, training, or the like; normal native intelligence

for example my big brother he in my eyes is the one of the smartest people ever… I know I am bias but hey who cares and he for some reason thought it would be the best thing ever to through beer bottles at a wasps nest… tell me is t just a guy thing or just a stupid teen thing or something to do with a simple laps of judgment?

Common sense is not common, because you can never assume someone to be logical...

well i guess with an intelligent mind, people tend to complicate things, even if the answer is very simple.
i think you can't have both high common sense and intelligence. it's just one is more dominant over the other.

Intelligence is not equatable with common sense. Common sense is like applied intelligence. You can get a 99 on your SAT, but you could also have a 99% chance of running your car into a street lamp for mistaking your gas pedal for the break.

Some people are really like that. No practical knowledge whatsoever...

Philosophically, Socrates believed that everyone has the ability of innate reasoning.. however it is dormant in some (or most) people for reasons unknown. But then again these things evolve with time. Look at the cavemen, would you think they had common sense?

He's just following that old adage about being book smart but common sense deficient. I consider myself to be highly educated and intelligent, however, if I had a beer bottle (indicating that I was drunk or close to it) and saw a wasp's nest, I probably would have done the same thing.

I often recognize statements including the phrase "common sense" as not stating much of importance. The phrase is ambiguous after all, and it may be a mistake to try to find much in it. Personally, I would favor a strict deconstruction of the phrase when using it, so common sense is simply showing sense (judgment) that is common among people.

Well, to continue the topic, here is a question which I think may show differing viewpoints. Which of these two positions would be the common sense one:
1) the earth goes around the sun, or 2) the sun goes around the earth? And why?

well with common sense... not actual fact, you would say the sun goes around the earth (that is if you haven't gone to school or looked through a telescope and stuffers) But I suppose what are trying to prove is that common sense is not at the basis for rating someone's intelligence. Since the sun does not orbit the earth, the person with common sense would be wrong, hence making what he thinks he knows not common since in this day and age it is common knowledge that the Earth Orbits the sun.

So, common sense depends on what age you are living in and what is common knowledge for that time. So it was common for people to pee wherever in caveman days, and it was common to cut your leg off if it was infected during the civil war, it was common for girls not to go to school during the 1600's and it was common to not marry inter-racially until the 1960's. which back then, if you had done these things out of the ordinary it would be assumed that you were insane, or just had not common sense.

So common sense just depends on where and when you are at the time that said thing is supposed to be common

^That example is my sister if you guys need confirmation.

Common sense is only common in the sense that love for it is common.
I have to agree with Edsamac on everything else. Knowledge unapplied is as useful as spitting in the wind, the only thing I would add to his description is that common sense entails some foresight as well.
