Underrated Animes are underrated for a reason
Posted 6/18/09 , edited 6/19/09
Complete Title: UNDERRATED and OVERRATED Animes are underrated/overrated for a Reason

specify reasons why you think an underrated anime is underrated? or why an overrated anime is overrated?

i'll give an example:
UNDERRATED
a popular underrated anime is trinity blood. this is a vampire anime having only 20+ episodes. i've watched this one and since the first ep, i was already hooked. i love the gorgeous art and the scenery (cathedrals and mansions) architecture is just so awesome. the plot is unique as it follows the struggle of terrans (humans) and methuselahs (advanced vampires) as they try to live together (or in most cases, fight with each other). it's a great anime, with deeper plots if you actually read the original novel and/or the ongoing manga. BUT it is an underrated anime. why so? these are the reasons:
1. only 26 episodes - not much episodes to give the full story/plot; also not much room for character developments here
2. there are many differences in the anime storytelling and in the manga--leaving important issues unaccounted for or untold
3. the ending sucked--period.
Endings are usually the problem why many good, even great animes suck. it's really really sad.

OVERRATED
on the other hand, there are overrated animes.
perhaps naruto would be a perfect example. this is an overrated anime because of these reasons: (pls pay attention)
1. it has gazillion episodes (lol)--200+ in fact--enough to have character developments and countless sidestories and filler episodes
2. on top of it, naruto has already 4+ movies (with almost the same plot--naruto meeting a new person, related to the new mission, and in the end, being a new friend, lol)
3. the anime has the best soundtrack i've ever heard (award-winning toshiro masuda composed most of the instrumentals)
4. almost all opening songs are topnotch, though the ending songs are pretty normal
5. the artwork, at first, seems mediocre, but it could grow into you--as the story progresses, some might learn to like it more. although there are really "funny-badly drawn parts" but i tell you, all animes have this problem. just imagine repeating the same scene a hundred times. aargh.
6. the anime, for the most part, is loyal to its manga creator (most important) which forces the anime to not lose its original touch of sentimentality and twisted storyline. naruto, contrary to popular belief is partially a psychological anime, as there are some themes that can really twist one's mind/belief
7. it's not yet ending period.
8. it still has a story which draws many people.
Overrated animes are like drugs that you have to finish to be satisfied or just to have a "closure". Most of them can get pretty boring, but the ending will always have a huge effect, whether it's good or bad, or just plain insane.

Think about it.

EDit: (PLEASE READ)
thanks for the reply
BUT just to clear it out, as most people here probably misunderstood,
i am not saying that underrated animes are bad and overrated ones
are all good..i am just asserting that they are so for a reason.
and this thread is for "those reasons". my opinion on naruto and trinity blood
are my own opinion, whether u disagree w/ me or not.
this thread is not about my opinion but about what you think the reasons are
for an anime to be dubbed as under/overrated.

you can give your own examples of anime that are under/overrated and tell the reasons why they
are so..(which is the purpose of the thread)

i want everyone to give their own answers/reasons/examples of animes.

1. it has gazillion episodes (lol)--200+ in fact--enough to have character developments and countless sidestories and filler episodes

Episode Count =/= Being overrated/underrated
Episode content being crappy but overly praise = Overrated.
Even if a series has a lot of episodes, as long as it's contents and fans are both at a reasonable level, and has a perfect reason for its fans, it's not overrated.

3. the ending sucked--period.
there are many differences in the anime storytelling and in the manga--leaving important issues unaccounted for or untold

Content of the episode =/= Underrated
Even if it sucks, it can be overrated.
Underrated means that it doesn't get the praise it needed
However, you listed a reason why it SHOULD have the praise it currently has.

that was long.

but i like underrated animes more than the overrated ones.

you specified some points there, and i might DISagree with you.

ALSO, overrated animes aren't always overrated because they are good. it's because of the characters. FANGIRLS---> they have power.
once they like a character, they would reign over almost all of the anime threads with their "i <3.....", "OMG! he is soooo hawt", "I LOVE HIM".

therefore, the characters of an overrated anime are much likely to be the reason for its overrated-ness.

Not necessarily true.

1..300+ if we will include shippuuden. And episode number does not matter. Take Vampire Knight for example. That show was very overrated despite having fewer episodes than some great ones.
2. Not true. They may have more movies but they all suck. Ghibli is the way to go.
3-4. Some of its soundtracks fail. A few were able to enhant me, however. But Shakugan no Shana has a better soundtracks than the Naruto one. And to tell you the truth, Shana only became great because of its music. That does not apply to Naruto, however.
5. It didn't to me. The artwork was not mediocre at best. It was garbage at best.
6. It did lose its touch. You see. Not all adaptations straight from the manga gives the vibe of 'originality'. Take my favorite anime for example: Hayate no Gotoku. The first season did not follow the manga wholeheartedly. I can say the manga is superior however I can feel the originality on the part of the first season which makes it great and greater than great. The second problem of Naruto is that everything was not distributed equally. There is a slow harmony. Everything is like slow motion. You'll spend a lot of time just to know that an apple is red. It drags and everything is not fluid.
7. There are hundreds of anime that has no ending yet. However, they are not automatically distinguished as overrated. Again, it does not follow.
8. Every anime has a story, no matter how bizarre. Beside, it wonders me how people are actually attracted to the story when a greater mangal ike Great Teacher Onizuka is present. Again. There are only a few novels that are overrated. You can't say that novel A does not have a story because it did not became popular.

Ughh... it feels like I'm reading one of those La Corda reviews in CR.

death note was pretty short too...

2. Some overrated anime doesnt have movies, but it's overrated anyway.

I don't agree with some of these. :| Elfen Lied = the most overrated bloody anime I've ever seen. It only had 14 episodes or so, and every 13 year old is bragging about how hardcore they are for watching it.

Underrated anime is usually underrated because it's got things like realistically drawn characters or story lines that aren't about shy schoolgirls getting swept off their feet. Aka, it doesn't appeal to most people.

Take Detective Conan for example. 11+ Movies. 600+ chapters. 500 (?) + Episodes. 10+ OVAs. It's underrated. Each episode is a new plot, and every episode keeps you hooked. I've watched it, and I'm always trying to solve each case (I fail). Detective Conan is, IMO, more underrated than Trinity Blood. The art is old school, and I haven't seen any character developments, as I'm on episode 11x. Each episode may not pull closer towards the original plot, but it keeps you sucked into it, at least.

I agree w/ you on the most part, but I have to disagree abt naruto's art quality. Bleach, another overrated anime w/ 200+ eps, manages to maintain good anime quality. THere are a few slips here and there, but none of which as distorted, unproportional as that of naruto. THat's one major reason why Ii only read the manga for Naruto. THe anime producers apparently think that Naruto has enough hype for them to be lax on the quality and still earn a great deal of money.
