Underrated means that it doesn't get the praise it needed
However, you listed a reason why it SHOULD have the praise it currently has.

thanks for the reply
BUT just to clear it out, as most people here probably misunderstood,
i am not saying that underrated animes are bad and overrated ones
are all good..i am just asserting that they are so for a reason.
and this thread is for "those reasons". my opinion on naruto and trinity blood
are my own opinion, whether u disagree w/ me or not.
this thread is not about my opinion but about what you think the reasons are
for an anime to be dubbed as under/overrated.

i want everyone to give their own answers/reasons/examples of animes.

that was long.

but i like underrated animes more than the overrated ones.

you specified some points there, and i might DISagree with you.

ALSO, overrated animes aren't always overrated because they are good. it's because of the characters. FANGIRLS---> they have power.
once they like a character, they would reign over almost all of the anime threads with their "i <3.....", "OMG! he is soooo hawt", "I LOVE HIM".

therefore, the characters of an overrated anime are much likely to be the reason for its overrated-ness.

yes, i agree..most bishounen animes are overrated because of their many fans.
though i dont watch them, cos i'm mostly interested in shounen animes, (not harem), even though
i'm a girl. i find it weird that i like fighting animes with many action scenes, lol.
thanks for sharing.

lol yes..does one piece have a movie?

OVERRATED
on the other hand, there are overrated animes.
perhaps naruto would be a perfect example. this is an overrated anime because of these reasons: (pls pay attention)
1. it has gazillion episodes (lol)--200+ in fact--enough to have character developments and countless sidestories and filler episodes
2. on top of it, naruto has already 4+ movies (with almost the same plot--naruto meeting a new person, related to the new mission, and in the end, being a new friend, lol)
3. the anime has the best soundtrack i've ever heard (award-winning toshiro masuda composed most of the instrumentals)
4. almost all opening songs are topnotch, though the ending songs are pretty normal
5. the artwork, at first, seems mediocre, but it could grow into you--as the story progresses, some might learn to like it more. although there are really "funny-badly drawn parts" but i tell you, all animes have this problem. just imagine repeating the same scene a hundred times. aargh.
6. the anime, for the most part, is loyal to its manga creator (most important) which forces the anime to not lose its original touch of sentimentality and twisted storyline. naruto, contrary to popular belief is partially a psychological anime, as there are some themes that can really twist one's mind/belief
7. it's not yet ending period.
8. it still has a story which draws many people.
Overrated animes are like drugs that you have to finish to be satisfied or just to have a "closure". Most of them can get pretty boring, but the ending will always have a huge effect, whether it's good or bad, or just plain insane.

1..300+ if we will include shippuuden. And episode number does not matter. Take Vampire Knight for example. That show was very overrated despite having fewer episodes than some great ones.
2. Not true. They may have more movies but they all suck. Ghibli is the way to go.
3-4. Some of its soundtracks fail. A few were able to enhant me, however. But Shakugan no Shana has a better soundtracks than the Naruto one. And to tell you the truth, Shana only became great because of its music. That does not apply to Naruto, however.
5. It didn't to me. The artwork was not mediocre at best. It was garbage at best.
6. It did lose its touch. You see. Not all adaptations straight from the manga gives the vibe of 'originality'. Take my favorite anime for example: Hayate no Gotoku. The first season did not follow the manga wholeheartedly. I can say the manga is superior however I can feel the originality on the part of the first season which makes it great and greater than great. The second problem of Naruto is that everything was not distributed equally. There is a slow harmony. Everything is like slow motion. You'll spend a lot of time just to know that an apple is red. It drags and everything is not fluid.
7. There are hundreds of anime that has no ending yet. However, they are not automatically distinguished as overrated. Again, it does not follow.
8. Every anime has a story, no matter how bizarre. Beside, it wonders me how people are actually attracted to the story when a greater mangal ike Great Teacher Onizuka is present. Again. There are only a few novels that are overrated. You can't say that novel A does not have a story because it did not became popular.

Ughh... it feels like I'm reading one of those La Corda reviews in CR.

Then I have my example:

Zettai Karen Children - Underrated
K-ON - Overrated

Zettai Karen Children is quite good. The exposure is enough. You want action? You got it. You want espers? You got it. You want a great deal of humor? You got it. The elements of this show is enough to make you laugh. However, I am left wondering why this show never picked any popularity at all. The soundtracks are good. The episodes spans 52 episodes and it is longer than some K-ON moe-shit out there. The anime studio is not actually one of the things on why K-ON is actually popular. Why? Compared to the author of K-ON, ZKC's author is much more experienced. One example of ZKC's author's work is Ghost Sweeper Mikami. In terms of reputation, KyoAni's only great anime is The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. Nothing Clannad (but after story is better). Nothing Kanon. It is Haruhi that shines the most... Lucky Star is just marketing. So, I don't see any good reason why K-ON should be popular when the only good episode there is episode 5 and the rest is garbage Mio moe moe kyun-shit.

More K-ON here : http://mikoto.wordpress.com/2009/06/18/k-on-12/

But oh well, what people wants is what people wants. This is actually the reason why most anime this Spring is like spoiled moe-rice.

But of course, I still think the resilience of the people who watch Naruto is quite high. It's like they are wasting a great time just to see their manga counterparts animated. I mean, the manga was less than decent abut still readable though I still lose interest since nothing really great happens. However it all changed to less than decent to garbage when all of those dead individuals resurrected. They should be dead already then that look alike of Orochimaru in coma just came to resurrect them. It's like the author never actually intended the fans to go warpath in Kakashi's death. Or in other character's death. It's like he just moves the way fans (or editor) begged him to do. At least another overrated series called Bleach has a more descent manga though they actually waste a lot of pages when everything in a chapter can be compressed into 10 pages. It's like the manga itself has a problem in pacing.

Oh well. It's not like I misunderstood you. But it is actually one of the cases wherein it is not necessarily true. Vampire Knight is an example of those overrated anime that I don't understand what's good about them. It's not like people actually waste time in reading the manga just to see Zero or Kaname. I know I am not like that since I don't actually watch Hayate just for the sake of Hinagiku. Ughh... It reminded me of Twilight.

Just to warn you. My brain don't feel good today so my train of thought is not actually perfect. Expect some gibberish here and there.

okey heres wt i think... trinity blood: meh, so so, made me fall asleep i wish and prayed for action but everytime it came to an action part, it would skip scenes n then come bak wen the fight was over. i gave up on it and im glad i did because wen my bro finished it he sed he wasted his life.

naruto heerrreee we go, sum ppl dont realize that these stupid fillers arnt even in the manga, they are just time wasters so we dont have to wait for the next manga chapter. try to seperate the stupid pointless fillers from the manga and u wd see y sum ppl still love it, i found out the other day that the 3 tails plot wasnt even in the manga it was just some random pointless filler. but now that thats over we will finally get serious and alot of things r gna happen.

tbh. yes i agree hate the art work and the emo style music now.

i agree with you on naruto. yes, yuukimaru isnt even in the manga.
the manga is still good, definitely more fast-paced than the anime, that's why there are still
many who like it.

on-topic:
underrated anime is tales of the abyss
it's originally a game turned anime. the artwork, through the end, is consistently great.
it only has 26 episodes but all major characters have been accounted for, with all of
their stories told. the plot is pretty unique too and the storytelling is okay. there are some
episodes that are really touching, and honestly, i cant remember a boring episode, though the
anime itslef is very predictable.

i think the reason this anime is underrated is because, first, its kinda short. and as i've mentioned, the
anime is kinda predicatble, even the ending part. (i rly never like the ending).
but it's a good series. i recommend it for anyone who likes a short, but touching anime.

oh. i cant really say anything about zettai karen, since i haven't watched it.
but i think K-ON is okay. it's overrated cos there are so many fanboys out there.
it's like the anime business really caters to the majority's interest.
back to K-ON, it's unique. i like it. a girl band is the first for me, and there's no wimpy,
half-assed, pervert guy there. i dont know, it's actually nice. love the art, minimalistic but
cool. cute cute characters.

thats is one of the main problems for tales of the abyss i chose not to associate myself with short fast ending anime.

But your opinions are a mis-assumption of what being "overrated" is, and what "underrated" is.
Overrated = Getting the praise it doesn't deserve
Underrated = Not getting the praise it deserves

For example, what you listed for a series being underrated is "WHY" it's getting the praise it currently has, which therefore makes in a contradiction since it would mean that it's not underrated.

3. the ending sucked--period.
there are many differences in the anime storytelling and in the manga--leaving important issues unaccounted for or untold

Sure, blah, blah, blah, your opinions, but if your opinions are way off from what overrated/underrated means, then it's quite obvious for a person to disagree with it.

Besides, this is the internet, all your opinions get challenged all the time.
