The media always hypes up medical scares. People tend to watch when you tell them what your talking about concerns whether they live or die. It was the same after 9/11 when all we heard about was how there was gonna be an anthrax or smallpox attack even though we had no evidence that terrorists has acquired biological weapons. Many give the media a little too much credit with any conspiracy talk. They air whatever gets the best ratings.

Spoilers para sa mga ayaw masaktan:

I'm not overly worried. There are1400 cases with 86 deaths so far. That means the current mortality rate is 6.1%, and that's in Mexico (probably in rural Mexico given the nature of the disease) where the doctors and health care facilities are of limited quality at best. I would bet that this number would be closer to 2-3% in an American hospital.

I realize that there is absolutely no cure for the virus, but it isn't the virus itself that kills you, it's the effects it has on you body (nausea, diarrhea, dehydration, liver damage, anemia, etc...). In American facilities we can better monitor and treat those effects and provide top quality supportive care, thus significant lowering the over mortality of the disease.

But the virus as it is now isn't the big concern, at least not for the most part. The dangerous part of the virus as it is now is how easily it can infect humans because unlike seasonal flus, our bodies have absolutely no exposure to this viral strain and thus no immunity. However, as it is now it's only slightly harmful, and couldn't cause a life threatening pandemic, only one of mild severity.

Like all viruses, though, N1H1 has a high capacity to mutate and take on new qualities, the same way it mutated to be able to infect humans. Most mutations have no significant effect or even a deleterious effect on the virus, but a small chance remains that a mutation could take place that made the virus much more deadly to humans. This quality combined with N1H1's novelty to our immune system could make for a pandemic in the true sense and this worst case scenario is what the WHO has to be worried out and needs to prepare for.

So while I'm glad the WHO and CDC are planning on and preparing for a serious pandemic, I think it's unlikely that we'll see anything truly horrific come from N1H1.

am not very scientific nor as statistically proficient as you are. i think that it is human for people to act the way they did. the intensity of fear brought by the 9/11 attack made the people believe that it could be possible. the media might have exaggerated some bits of information about the biological menace to come after and made the people believe. that's their choice - for ratings sake or whatever. talking about working outside ethics...

same thing goes with the N1H1 virus. maybe or truly may prove to be nonbeneficial to anyone as you said - "The surgical/face masks, don't the people know that those masks have small holes in them that are actually big enough for viruses/bacteria to pass through like an open door?Ang tatanga ngay nila!" . well then why would they use such things? probably because they want to at least feel secure even if they know they are not. to feel safe even subconsciously.

they should prepare for that but now is just as important. there are still deaths now and that may double the time the virus mutates. and we don't know who it'll struck you, me anyone... am not horrified like you coz if it's your time to push up daisies it's your time...

...Who's afraid of H1N1? If anyone's afraid he/she is a chicken. Dengue is far worse to this flu. H1N1 if treated you have a higher chances of getting cured.

Seriously, I am not afraid, the disease even not scare us at all... I mean higher survivability rate plus curable with existing medicines. I don't get the idea of being afraid at all. If you are afraid to get sick, oh well, you are a pussy!

when you talk about conspiracy talk it will only lead to nothing...
because they(government) have POWER... manipulation with the use of money...
and that may include the media as well...

true about the masks lol
the people let themselves be manipulated by the media too much
anyway, heard about this from my prof..
don't know if its true or not
it was during the height of the h1n1 scare and he told us to be careful cause the reported case of h1n1 victims in our school is not only as what the media had told but at least 60 times more than that. blockmates of mine started being absent for school 2 weeks straight etc
