Hero’s updated cast list

Hero, MBC’s upcoming drama and Lee Junki’s next television role, has lost Han Ji-min as its leading lady and picked up Kim Min-jung (New Heart) in her place. It has also cast Ji Chang-wook, newly famous from his role as youngest brother Mi-pung in KBS’s Sons of Sol Pharmacy.

This’ll be a great opportunity for Ji Chang-wook to jump from one high-profile project to another, and change his image as well. In Sol Pharmacy, he’s a tender-hearted nice guy, but in Hero, he’ll play a “spiteful” and “opportunistic” reporter with a chip on his shoulder and a propensity for lying. (This probably sets him up as a natural rival to Lee Junki’s character, who works as a reporter at a third-rate newspaper. And then there’s also the “elite” reporter played by Eom Ki-joon…) Ji said, “In order to gain respect for my acting, I have to take on diverse characters and broaden my acting spectrum.”

Hero (the articles note that “Hero” is still a working title) will enter filming once it has completed casting its supporting actors. It will follow Heading to the Ground on MBC in November. Its cast has me curious (also listed on the roster is Bbaek Ga) more than the plot, but this could be an interesting series.

Jung Soo-young adds comic flair to Hero

Jung Soo-young is a hoot, so news that she is joining Lee Junki’s upcoming drama Hero is a welcome one. Jung, originally a musical actress, has been steadily making a name for herself in dramas as a scene-stealer by playing comic, quirky characters. (For instance: She was crazy Kang-ja in Fantasy Couple, bizarre Hwa-ja in Queen of Housewives, and quirky Bu-mi in City Hall.

In Hero, she is taking on another unique character, though this one is reportedly different from the ones she has portrayed in the past. Jung plays a newspaper reporter with a strong resumé and equally strong personality; she’s a pro at handling men and possesses the ability to deflate one’s ego in an instant. She works at the same paper as Lee Junki’s character, which promises to show us some “cheerful and lively team play.”

Hero also stars Kim Min-jung and Eom Ki-joon and is scheduled for a November 18 premiere.

Ah! Would have love Han Ji Min to be in this show... She'll definitely be able to bring the spunkiness into the character she was supposed to play... What a pity!

First look at Hero’s heroes

Another of the year’s highly anticipated dramas is nearing its premiere date: Lee Junki’s MBC drama Hero [히어로], which features the star as a hot-blooded reporter. On October 8, new stills were released of Lee Junki in action on the set, which follows a previously released still of second lead Eom Ki-joon (below), who plays a rival reporter.

In the new images, Lee’s reporter character arrives at his first day of work at a small-time newspaper. Lee Junki said, “The director, writer, and all the actors and crew are going into filming doing our best. Please look forward to the liveliness and passion of the drama, as well as a side of my personality I haven’t shown before in other projects, as I play a reporter with cheerfulness and enthusiasm.”

One source from the production team of the comic-infused drama said, “The director has worked with Lee Junki and the other actors for a long time in advance, so the set is very upbeat. It’s so full of laughs that it almost feels like the set of a comedy.”

Aside from Lee Junki and Eom Ki-joon, Hero stars Kim Min-jung, Jung Soo-young, and Ji Chang-wook and follows Heading to the Ground on Wednesdays and Thursdays. It airs its first episode on November 18.

Hero gets pop-star cameos and a Japanese broadcast

Driven by the star power of Lee Junki, MBC’s new Wednesday-Thursday drama Hero [히어로] has been licensed for a Japanese broadcast even before it airs in Korea. This is not that surprising when one considers Lee Junki’s widespread popularity throughout Asia, but what IS surprising is the recent admission that the licensing was done far in advance — as far back as last November.

A source explained on October 9 that most dramas in this climate are subject to economic considerations and licensing is generally not finalized until two to four episodes have aired. “However, in Hero’s case, recognition of the solid synopsis and lead actor Lee Junki has led to an unusual circumstance of an early sale at a high price.”

Also announced on the 9th was the drama’s confirmed cameo of pop girl group KARA. The ladies will be featured in the first episode in a performance scene. The mini-concert marks the first meeting for Lee Junki and Kim Min-jung, who play a reporter and a police detective, respectively. They get off on the wrong foot, so I’m betting we can expect a lot of bickering in their future.

The KARA members said of the cameo opportunity, “It’s an honor for us to start off this drama together with Lee Junki and Kim Min-jung, who are actors we have always liked. We’re already excited just thinking about filming, and and really looking forward to it. It feels exciting to be able to show a different side of KARA in the drama.”

Hero premieres on November 18, after Heading to the Ground ends.

Lee Junki as a nightclub waiter in Hero

Lee Junki may be playing a reporter in the new MBC drama Hero, but in these stills, he’s playing the part of a nightclub waiter. (The articles don’t specify why, but I suspect he is undercover.)

A source from the production said, “Lee Junki is so slick as he acts the role that the staff has joked back and forth with him about whether he used to work at a nightclub. It should be entertaining watching him show various sides to the Do-hyuk character, the ‘passionate reporter,’ as he transforms into a fun, oddball waiter.”

Another source said, “The staff and actors are all working hard at all hours of the night. We anticipate that the passionate work of the Hero team will heat up the drama as well. We hope that the viewers will look forward to watching.”

Hero, which also stars Kim Min-jung and Eom Ki-joon, will broadcast a week earlier than originally scheduled. Due to the cutting of Heading to the Ground, it premieres on November 11.

A new look for Kim Min-jung in Hero

Actress Kim Min-jung (New Heart), who came onboard Hero after Han Ji-min dropped out, has a new look for the drama, one meant to draw out her professional side as a female cop. On the one hand, I think Kim is a talented actress who looks cute with the short style, but on the other, I don’t know why dramas think that an unflattering short haircut is the best way to make a woman look “serious.” It didn’t really work for Song Hye-gyo in The World They Live In, who adopted a similarly blunt bowl cut in the name of “professionalism.”

(Face it, kdrama watchers are a critical bunch — who like characters to be pretty or comically ugly, but not really anywhere in between — and paired opposite an uber-popular actor often remarked upon for his pretty features (Lee Junki, that is), I don’t think the look does her any favors.)

Kim’s management company explained that the new image reflects how diligently she is putting herself into her “cute, passionate detective” role, “and is working very hard to deliver bright and healthy fun through her character of Hero’s Joo Jae-in.”

Kim Min-jung’s last role was in the ill-fated baseball drama Strike Love, playing a sweet, innocent character that was well-received by fans of the original manhwa, who felt she captured the essence of that pure character. No doubt this role will be a turn in the other direction. Hero premieres November 11 on MBC.

Photos of Lee Jun-ki in "Hero" unveiled

Major broadcaster MBC on Tuesday unveiled photographs of the characters to appear in upcoming TV series "Hero", starring Hallyu star Lee Jun-ki.

The photos, taken at MBC Dream Center studios in Ilsan, showed Lee and the cast members posing as the characters they will play in the drama.

Lee, as energetic journalist Jin Do-hyuk, is seen wearing comfortable clothes while co-star Kim Min-jung, who plays a cop in the drama, has a gun and handcuffs as accessories.

"Hero", about a group of young heroic characters fighting against a corrupt society, is set to air in Korea starting November 11.

The 27-year-old actor became a household name in 2005 playing a woman-like clown in the hit film "The King and the Clown" and was recently voted the most popular Korean Wave star in China.

Kim Min-jung leaves "Hero"

Actress Kim Min-jung has withdrawn from playing her role opposite Hallyu star Lee Jun-ki in MBC TV series "Hero", a week before its premiere.

The 27-year-old actress had been set to play the lead female role in "Hero", but decided to pull out due to an arm injury which has made it impossible for her to participate in shoots, an official at broadcaster MBC said on Tuesday.

Kim had suffered the injury while shooting drama "Strike Love" in April which developed into a calcific tendinitis, a condition of calcium deposits within the rotator cuff tendons.

Her agency said the actress cannot move her arm properly due to the condition and will have to undergo continuous treatment and therapy. The injury had also kept the 27-year-old actress from attending a press conference for the drama two weeks ago.

"Hero", about a group of youngsters who rebel and fight against a corrupt society, is set to air starting November 11.

Kim was to play the part of Joo Jae-in, a police officer on a homicide team who becomes romantically involved with Jin Do-hyeok, played by Lee Jun-ki who stars as a reporter at a third-rate newspaper.

Hero still looking for a leading lady for Lee Junki

We reported yesterday that actress Kim Min Jung had left the production of MBC's Hero recently, leaving the drama without a leading lady once again. At the time of writing, a replacement for Kim Min Jung is still being sought for.

Kim Min Jung was not the first choice for the drama's role which belonged to Han Ji Min initially. But the latter dropped out of the production before filming begun, with Kim Min Jung being drafted in to replace her. But a serious shoulder injury to Kim Min Jung which could not heal in time meant that Hero is now looking for it's third leading lady.

The production had said yesterday that it would be announcing the new leading lady between 3 - 4th November. It has already sent out invitations to Moon Chae Won and Yoon So Yi but nothing is confirmed yet since it's all very last minute.

A production staff expressed, "With the drama scheduled for 11th November (next Wednesday), it's becoming increasingly unlikely that we can get everything ready in time as we have to re-do everything from the beginning. There's a possibility that the drama might be delayed for a week or more. MBC is already on standby to air other programs to fill the slot. There are no plans to modify the present script as yet."

We await good news from their quest to find a new leading lady
