Poor Gohan. Kidnapped by his uncle, watched his father get murdered, was kidnapped again by the guy who killed his father, was trained/tortured by said kidnapper in order to become demon, developes a clear case of Stockholm Syndrome and just when it looks like he might actually start caring about his kidnapper he dies, next his father is brought back to life only to have him die again but that it turn out he wasn't really dead he just didn't want to come home, but than he finally does come home only to end up dying for real due to something that he (Gohan) was indirectly responsible for. And keep I mind that I haven't even mentioned his anger issues, abandonment issues, the PTSD he would most likely would be suffering from considering all the battles he's been in, and his insane mother who's obsessed with turning him into a scholar.

Czeslaw Meyer (Baccano!) and Victorique (gosick) are the ones I can think of off the top of my head

I think Oz had a pretty bad childhood, from Pandora Hearts, so did Alice, Gilbert, and Vincent, all from Pandora Hearts.

All things considered Seras is an extremely well adjusted individual.

Despite that she manages to be one of the most upbeat characters in the show and shrug off her horrific backstory.

He made all those heartrending decisions for the right reasons though.

It is a pity that Fate/Stay Night has this train-wreck of a protagonist though.

I just cant help but hate Shirou for some reason. (and yes I have played the VN too, I hate him in all his incarnations)

I agree, it's worse to be betrayed than to never have any emotional support system. Gaara probably had the worse childhood, and it showed in his teen years. He almost went on a rampage killing everyone without a second thought. If Naruto wasn't there to show him it's possible to change he would have turned into his curse and went on a killing spree.

Every hero and herione from every Key product. It just wouldn't be Key if they didn't. Especially Angel Beats- that was the plot.
And maybe also Hayate Ayasaki- he did have a horrible childhood, but that just makes me laugh harder.
For the worst pre-highschool childhood, I'd say Kotoura Haruka. Being an ESPer isn't always what it's made to be.

Czeslaw Meyer from Baccano! had a pretty bad childhood (constantly tortured and experimented on), especially since he's been a child for over 300 years.
