Those who say Allen had an easy life, you seriously need to read the light novel:
Started off with him being thrown out by his parents and some time later sold into a circus. There everyone hated him and beated him up whenever they had the chance. If he made one mistake, and I mean any one mistake, like even look at a performer or something, bam—no food or sleep in the snow. The clown hated Allen so much that he killed a dog that was friendly to Allen. After, Allen met Mana Walker who kind of became a father to Allen. For only 3 years did Allen have a norma happy life. Then, Mana crashed into a building in a carriage and died. Allen almost went mental when Mana died. When sitting at Mana's grave, Earl Miellienium came to Allen and asked if Allen wanted to bring Mana back to live. Allen said yes and brought Mana's spirit back to earth. Allen was glad that Mana came back but Mana came back as an Akuma. In order to punish Allen, Mana put a curse on him so allen could see akuma's souls (reflected by Lavi that it was like living hell). Unintentionally, Allen killed Mana. Later, Cross Marian found Allen by the tombstone and took Allen with him. During his depression, Allen's hair turned white. I'm not going to say anything about Cross, debts, work-to-death and gambling. Oh, I forgot about the hand oops.

Yeah, maybe Lucy had it tougher. Also, I'll add Train Heartnet with his forceful teachings of murder. Lenalee only had her tortureand loneliness. Vash and Kenshin in some ways are similar.

Oh my I'm surprised I forgot Hisoka from descendants of darkness. First tortured by his parents then that cursed Muraki who drove Hisoka to his death with a curse (I'm sorry for not listing other Muraki's tortures, it's just too much). Hisoka died when he was 16 and baca,e a shinigami. You thought you died it's over? No! Muraki still comes back to torture Hisoka and making him kill a girl he liked. Also, Tsuzuki had some past too. It's not all revealed for me but so far, he was bullied and beat up when he was young because his eyes were purple and he "was not human". I believe his sister was killed because of him and he went insane. He went to a hospital and had a coma for 8 years and regained his consciousness occasionally for brief periods of time. The doctor who overlooked Tsuzuki was Muraki's grandfather (this happened around 1900s, present being 1980-ish, I think, correct me please) and noted that the patient didn't eat, drink and age for those 8 years. Then, when Tsuzuki died at age of 26. So far, it isn't clear what Tsuzuki is atoning for as a shinigami. He also has fast regeneration abilities even higher than shinigami's. It's also noted that Tsuzuki was a murderer when he was alive.

Yeah, tough pasts. Don't get mad at me for saying this, but all naruto, fairy tail, bleach and one piece characters are rather too..... Plain. Yeah sad but not crying sad. Almost forgot Rika there. There's also Natsume who had a very un welcomed childhood. When his parents died, he was transferred from one foster home to another and everyone hated him because he can see youkai. This is more like a painful childhood. His foster parents and sibling beat him up, locked him up, let him starve and left him outside for the night. Same thing was done by the youkai who didn't like a human seeing them. Natsume was suffering till he got to highschool and got foster parents that loved him. Yeah, the anime was happy, but his past is so depressing...

Lucy, but I really do not want to sympathize with her seeing that she is equivalent to a homicidal maniac. Boo-hoo my freaking puppy is dead, let me kill every single innocent person i see. No one gives a flying fuck about her puppy, they care about their family she just murdered

Guts got raped, killed his dad, a mercenary around 7, watched his mother die a slow death right before his eyes, and was born under a tree of hanging carcasses.

People saying Naruto characters make me laugh\ they don't hold anything to Guts childhood in Berserk. I only pointed out specifics in Guts childhood not everything.

I haven't watched Higurashi, but I believe Miyo Takano had a bad childhood, with the orphanage she grew up in? Apparently there are punishments there like getting fed to chickens and other horrible stuff..

(Just trying to think of an example that might have not been listed XD)

Nico Robin from One Piece.

Robin's mom left her when she was a little girl to find out about the void century which no one except the marines know what happened during that time period. Anyone trying to find out about that void century is put to death. After her mom Nico Olvia left, Robin was raised by two people who hated her. The people on the island considered Robin a monster because of a Devil Fruit that she ate which allowed her to sprout her limbs such as arms from anything. The kids of the island as well as the adults treated her like crap, but not all of the adults.

Robin met a group of scholars which not only had the hugest collection of history on the island, but in the world. The marines later found out that the scholars of the island Ohara were researching the void century. The day that the marines landed on the island was the day that Robin's mom came back to warn the scholars. Her mom had the friendly giant Saul run away with Robin. The marines burned the place that held all of the research and ended up killing everyone on the island indiscriminately and that did not just include the scholars.

As Saul ran away with Robin, the marine admiral Aokiji chased after them. Aokiji froze Saul to death with his ice Devil Fruit ability. Robin ran away, but Aokiji caught up with her. For his own reasons, Aokiji let Robin sail away from the island. As Robin sailed away, she saw the entire island burning.

She had a huge bounty put on her head for escaping Ohara. Everyone that she thought could raise her if she worked for them ended up turning her over to the marines. Robin escaped each time. At the age of 17, she ended up being employed by the pirate Crocodile to help him do his evil work.

That is when the Alabasta story arc comes in which is when she is in her late 20s.

Maybe not the worst childhoods in general, but with regards to a specific event in their childhoods, two which spring to mind are Ed from FMA(B) and pretty much anyone from Angel Beats!, like Yuri.

Asuka Soryu Langley from Eva

Her father abused her. Her mother refused to accept her, and instead convinced herself that a hand puppet was her daughter. When Asuka finally did something her mother would have congratulated her for, she found out her mother committed suicide.

And then there is her death scene from the End of Evangelion.

If you could consider it a childhood i'd say the chick from Gunslinger Girl, getting raped repeadidly and beat to the brink of death is pretty bad in my opinon.
