So, what program do you use? I've heard of Windows Movie Maker, Sony Vegas, Magic edit pro, Adobe Premiere, etc..., but I wanted to know from people who actually use them for amvs what their pros and cons are. Please include as much as information as possible. Thank you.

I use Windows Movie Maker (vista)

Some Advantages:

+Very simple to use and understand.

+Supports Windows media HD (way better than .wmv quality)

+Some new effects (these were not in the XP edition)

+Doesn't lag or freeze (windows movie maker XP used to freeze every 10 minutes on me)

Some Disadvantages:

-Maybe a little too simple

-Very limited effects/transitions

-Only one audio line on the time line (aside from the audio from video)

-Cannot save as an .avi file

These are just some advantages and disadvantages that I thought of on the spot.

ok, so i've done alot of two different clips in my various videos but i have never attempted to do it with windows movie maker because i use Adobe Premeire Elements. from what i've seen with other users of windows movie maker i don't beleive it is possible to use two clips at the same time. if anyone knows anything more on this topic please feel free to leave a comment.

First I use Total Video Converter because most anime files are in a strange format and I want them all in .avi...
Then I use Virtual Dub to crop and edit the files I wanna use because I hate subtitles in my amvs...
Then I put the video together using Windows Movie Maker 2

I used to use Adobe Premiere but like all Adobe's products, it eats my ram up like a kid in a candy store. I've found that I can do most things with Movie Maker that I could with Adobe without screwing up my timing because of lag. This isn't because I lack ram either... I have plenty of ram but then again I have Windows Vista which also eats up all my ram

Windows Movie Maker: The way I do it is I overlap one clip over the over. Once the clips are on your timeline you drag the clip over another clip with your mouse. Using this method you can't completely combine both clips but you can combine the majority of it with the other...

dunno if that's what you mean't or not :3

Yeah I didn't know what you meant by "two clips in one." If you meant overlapping then you can just extend the fade like Meowsa said. Now there are people who make effects for windows movie maker and post it on forums. That's where I get most of my good effects. I have to say, you can do almost everything on Windows movie maker. While it seems limited in many ways, with a little creative thinking and some great resources on the web you can get almost any effect.

I used these effects and tried to create some awesome amvs, but to my dismay I found that effects take the viewers attention away from the story that you are trying to convey. Don't get me wrong, effects are wonderful, but you have to have a sense for knowing where to incorporate them. Since I don't have a lot of that, I use effects very sparingly.

Downloading the effects for WMM is a bit complicated and I don't want to post detailed instructions unless several people are interested in it. If you are interested, quote my post or something and let me know.

I agree hehe
I rarely ever use effects/transitions other than fade, brightness and erase in.

from what i have seen, windows movie maker only has one track for editing so having two clips playing at the same time isnt possible, however it has been almost a year since i last used windows movie maker so i am not sure if the newer ones can do it or not. but like most of what people have already said, you can try using them as transitions but i am not sure how good that will be. another thing, whats so good about having two clips run on top of each other? i think it just looks messy and un professional.

Sony vegas i think that is the best you can use for movie making, well is not as simple as WMM but it's more useful and it has more things and efects on the tool it have.
It's more advance and you can do almost everything you need but it's not perfect but i think is the best i've use till now
