MKV or AVI?
Posted 5/17/07
A lot of fansubbers are subbing in MKV these days. I was wondering if you guys have any preference?

I don't mind either but lately I've been asked by a lot of people to convert my MKV files to AVI files for them.

[edit] ^it's not a thread about uploading video types.
It's a thread about what video file type you prefer.

[edit edit] ummm i don't think so... it's nothing to do with any support/help questions.
She just wants to know which one (MKV or AVI) we prefer.

MKV,
Because
You can have different audio and subtitles and the quality is usually better.
People find it complicated, but it's no big deal if you find a good media player.
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/ is a good player that plays most video file types without the need to install their codecs

The only reason i would like to use AVI, would be becoz i can put it on my mp4 without re-encoding it to view it.

I am not computer illiterate or computer stupid, but when it comes down to format, I couldn''t really care less so long as it plays with decent quality. (Decent meaning the sound isn't fuzzy and I can actually read the subtitles.)

I don't think I've even heard of MKVs.

mkvs all the way,. If I have to I'll go with avi, but only if I have to. Plus with mkv if a better fansub comes out I can just download their script without having to download a whole new video (providing it's soft sub of course >_>)

EDIT: noooooo don't use vlc as some fansubbers boycot it. If you want to play mkvs just download the 'CCCP' http://www.cccp-project.net/

I kno but what can you do. It's all to promote 'CCCP' plus vlc doesn't cope too well with subtitles.

Some fansubbers realease their script when they realease there mkvs as .ass files.
http://tokyotosho.com/search.php type '.ass' into that.

actually .ogm is far superior than either of them, but mkv's better than avi. avi needs a better player that doesn't require you to install a million codecs.

As long as it's compatible with VLC Player (I'm a Ubuntu Linux user) I don't really care. But I'm more accustom to .avi, I've not even heard of .mkv

I find that all .MKV files that I have, have dub's and different kinds of subs! Avi files have the same quality but not all of them have subs!

If you want to make an AMV .avi is better then you don't have to convert it. That deal about VLC was surprising. I had no clue. Probably gonna switch soon.

EDIT: I just installed the CCCP and it is SO much better. You can actually see the different font instead of that same old font on VLC.
