I've noticed through the years as I've become more and more dependent on my computer, that my spelling skills have declined. On the computer, I don't really think about spelling because it's corrected for me or I simply run a spell check and don't care to take the time to relearn the correct way again. Technology made it too easy for me.. *sighs*.. and now me dontz speel gud.

I seldom write anything out on paper these days and the other day as I was leaving a note for someone, I kept doubting my spelling. I used to be an excellent speller. I find it crazy how much I've lost that by depending on spell check.

Anyone else feel the same?

Mmm I'm a really fast type so anything whatever comes to my mind I can easily type it out and sometimes I'll make the mistake of how it sounds like in my head and the correct spelling but yeah, its nice to have spell checker because I'll know what I need to spell right but 3/10 times I'll right click and do the suggested but most of the type I correct myself with the ol fashion Backspace.

My internet browser checks spelling as I'm typing. I can't stand having my text underlined (yeah, weird) so I retype it. So that eliminates me having to decide which is the correct spelling.

I'm not sure what that's called... anyone care to enlighten me? I want to know the tech term.

No, not that. I think it's a function in Microsoft Word as well. When a word is misspelled it's underlined with a squiggly red line. There might not be a term for that.

It's not T9. Goes by a variety of names, but Check Spelling As You Type is what it's usually referred to as. Sometimes it's coupled with a grammar checker that usually underlines grammatically dubious words in a different color.

For some reason I've never been able to stand having either of them on. The first thing I do at a public computer, if I have to do any typing whatsoever, is turn off the spelling checker so I don't need to see those unseemly underlines. I might be full of it, but I like to think it's easier to be confident in your spelling if you stop relying on the computer and allow yourself to learn from your own mistakes.

So it doesn't help your spelling in the long run!

D:

Idk, I haven't noticed any differences in my spelling since I got my laptop early this year and started going online and chatting a lot, but it's only been just over half a year, and I did use computers before, though not as much.

Hmm that could be true. But you could also learn how to spell the words. I think it's better to keep using that spell checker.

It depends on the person on how he/she uses spell check. You can improve your spelling using a spell checker if you right click the misspelled word (often underlined in red) and look at the suggestions and try to remember the correct spelling.
