Sounds like an updated version of "Rules are meant to be Broken" by Kamagata Eiichi. Though I'm not sure about this.

Well you're still pretty early in. What you need to know is that Gintama doesn't "become more of a action series", it has specific arcs that vary in length, the longest spanning 8 episodes. These arcs are more serious and, as you said, filled with action. And they do follow a plot. After and in-between the arcs, however, Gintama goes back into it's funny and joyful self with gags and jokes. It doesn't stay serious forever after a certain point in the show.

Now, to answer your question, one of the first and most popular arcs starts at episode 58. This is the Benizakura arc, one that was recently adapted into a movie as you may, or may not have heard about. You also have a smaller one around episode 40. I'd say that if you like what you've seen so far, the best thing to do is to keep watching. Besides, you still haven't even passed the introductory stage where all the characters are introduced. After that, it only picks up the pace and grows better and better.

I thinks it's important to note that even the more action-filled arc have still a very huge helping of humor (example, yoshiwara much later on)

edit : Now, i know i should be patient, but i'm going to ask anyway :
anyone any idea if a group is subbing the movie? The raw is now more than a month old by now and i can't seem to find any group that took up the project. Yes yes i know that movies can take up to a year, but no news/updates at all is kind of sad.

And before someone barfs morals all over me, consider that NA and Europe probably will never get the movie any other way.

Also, from what i saw on the raw : looks awesome.

Rumbel Subs have confirmed that they are working on it. But if you're looking for an estimated time-frame guess, I'd say it could take weeks or even months before they're finished. I haven't seen anyone else picking it up. Check up on Rumbel's site for updates.

Well "IndoAnime - Hikari" has released a subtitled version of the movie on nyaa now. It's pretty good.

Rumbel's version postponed indefinitely as they are short on staff and are focusing on Infinite Stratos for some reason.

yeah, gonna load the IndoAnime one over the night. And i don't really understand either why they focus on that reportedly average-to-awful series, which they are also stalling at episode 4 released on 1st march.
Well, we got the movie now, rejoice!

wait, wasn't there supposed to be an ova too?

The last chapter of the manga that was adapted in the anime was Ch. 292 "All Mankind is Santa".

The next chapter, and presumably the first to be animated in the new series, is Ch.293 "Think about balance in your meals" which is a hilarious story of Yamazaki eating nothing but anpan for weeks.
