imo this thread should be renamed to something like "what do think about class debates" or "did you ever have a class debate" cuz the name of the thread sounds a bit off i mean im sure most classes are "allowed" to have a debate. back on topic yea my classes always have debates esp in classes like religon and there was even a debating team . and in my jnr cert there was a enligh question about writing a speech so we would had to practice debating in our eng classes. haha actually the funniest debate happened when this weird girl in my class started debating bout like rat rights or something she kept going on like how rats are smarter than my class and how they have feeling too , ha it was so funny! she got so emotional over it that the teacher couldnt even help but laugh omg it was hilarious!!

No...The thread title is fine.

And debate about boring topics chosen by judges rather than topics you want?

Pft, sure.

If you want to debate about something "interesting", then you should become a lawyer.

I disagree.

The most interesting debates occur out of nowhere in the real world.

I disagree.

The most interesting debates occur out of nowhere at the right place. :)

Lol I guess it depends on the situation. I've found a few threads in the Extended Discussion section that were pretty interesting.

Exactly.

Being a lawyer is no different in interest than being part of the debate team or part of the Mock Trial. -_-

Of course debates should be allowed. How else can one learn to argue, prove and learn how to deal with other people in discussions?

This is all about control. Control from the teacher's side. If a student is wasting time in the lesson, by needlessly arguing, the teacher needs to retake control over the class. Debating without cause is certainly annoying, and just because one person have a tendency for trying to make arguments, doesn't mean debates should be abolished.

Instead the the student should be told to shut it, and come with relevant pointers when the time is correct.

Yes and no. Completely abolishing the idea of debates in classes is not good either. Debates are here to broaden your horizon about what others think, to improve your own rhetorical skills, and to learn how to properly debate.

Arguments =/= debates

So, debates: yes
arguments: no

And actually, I think this thread would be more appropriate for the Extended discussion section, but so far the majority of replies does contain quite a decent level, and that being in the General discussion! Pretty decent. So, I'm quite eager to see how this thread will develop in the GD. =]

Just as long as it's not idiots that are actually doing the debating, or else there's a chance that it'll probably turn into an argument, which is obviously one of the valid reasons why its not always a good idea to have such things in classes... because yeah, every class has their fucking idiots.
Debates are good for getting insight on other people's ideas though, and can obviously help with the learning part.
So in my opinion it depends on the topic that is being depated and the people that are doing the bebating.

yes, i think debates should... they help other people hear new ideas, improve debating and rhetorical skills, etc... but the debating should also be limited so they don't become agruements... they are always those people would will get carried away and will offend others... and also the teacher might also get disrespected

Honestly, debates should be allowed if it relates to the course being taught during class if the teacher allows it. Saying it's outlawed means you're not allowing the students to be opened up to different and new thoughts and ideas on the topic at hand.

Though really, if you're mean debating in general then there's a club for that like xO_Skittles_Ox mentioned. And their is also the possibility that the border between debate and argument could be crossed during class, thus cause several problems to arise during class depending on what's being discussed and how far it's deviated from the main topic...
