They should be, exchanging opinions and points of view are huge benefits for the students. Otherwise they'll be very narrow-minded and lack the capacity of defending their ideas

Structured, controlled, and guided debates should not only be allowed but be encouraged in the classroom at high school level. Senseless arguments, bickering, and debates that are off topic or go beyond the purview of the class? Definitely not. It all comes down to control like an earlier post mentioned. A well reasoned and monitored debate helps teach people imprortant communication and thinking skills. Two things education in America at the public level fail at dismally.

I think it's a good thing to have debates during classes.
It always end at the canteen where in someone throws ketchup at random people, then there goes the fuck disciplinarian.

A debate that is relevant to the topic that the teacher wishes to discuss would be appropriate otherwise it would just be a waste of class time and thus a pointless exercise. If that's the case i think it is the responsibility of the teacher to get the students in line and continuing doing what he/she thinks is best to teach the class about relevant topics to said course.

Of course. If the debate is legitimate then sure, why not. But if it's a debate that is utterly pointless and a waste of time, then no. Like in English class; you could pretty much debate about anything. (That's why I love English class. >w<).

Definitely, it should happen more often, your more likely to remember the discussion when everyone is involved, true fact, an exam question came up in essay form and I pretty much wrote down an entire discussion that we had in class about the psychology of aneorexia in my own words, got full marks in it.
