Insight? sure thing cutting woman nipples and eating them riiiiight. ( or did this actually happen? I don't know but it seems unlikely, it it's true please educate me on it)
Yes you have a point, there is some history, 'way of life', etc. But insightful? as in deep awareness/understanding? Don't think so.

Historical? partly.
...Insightful? errr yes and no.

The series is artistically interesting in every level. I think it tries to cover too much though. 12 episodes for 8 yes 8 volumes of manga ( correct me if I'm wrong).

I'm not saying is a bad choice, I just cached up with the last 4 episodes and it's getting better.
7/10 as a total for me *(6/10 history | plot , and definitely a 10/10 art, direction, cinematography, etc)

is fantasy counted as magical themed.. for example dragons? then again, aren't dragons part of culture/history?

what i am about to recommend involves imagination; an anime called "Vision of the Escaflowne". i won't be giving anything away except that escaflowne stopped showing after only awhile on some cartoon channels because according to the broadcasting company "kids couldn't understand escaflowne's complex story plot".

try not to read the synopsis for escaflowne before you watch the actual thing, because for me i find it stupid and a wee bit misleading... it gave me a different impression of escaflowne than what it was. i am glad i watched it, for in the end i got more than what i bargained for. the starting maybe abit slow for some people, but give it a few episodes before judging whether escaflowne is your cup of tea.

as they say, rather watch one more bad anime than miss a good anime

[Warning: Mature content in this post]

I dont know if the "cutting nipples" part was specifically true to the story but I wouldn't be surprised it happened. That was after around 1500 era after all, around about the same time that the Spanish Inquisition happened, and that was even more horrible, they didn't only cut nipples (torture methods include cutting the whole breasts and making the victim or her daughter eat them).

Main point being, the barbarity level of the show is not unlikely to be far from reality.

Insight is a personal realization. The show becomes just a tool. If one could see through the literalism in any literary context and be able to extract certain awareness, it is said that one gains insight. Similarly, the insight is not embedded in the surface but it becomes some underlying subtlety. For example, perhaps we can see the story and how it unfolds, and almost all of the characters are not merely black and white. Most of the time, it was just honor that holds them up with their idealisms that resulted to barbarity. And then we ask ourselves: is this how really ancient Japan is? And then we meditate on this and only after then we gain some insight.

Apart from the species related to the Komodo Dragon, there are no known records of dragons in history.

Magical themed is almost certainly a fantasy (except for practical magic shows and perhaps, shamanistic rituals, there are no proven magic practices in the world). Fantasy is not necessarily magic-themed though. Fantasy can be adult themed too i.e. political- it fantasizes a world where communism is rampant and is the major form of governance globally instead of democracy.

Thanks lots for the contributions, though
