For those of you who haven't been informed yet, Mandalay Pictures has decided to make a Hollywood Live Action Movie for Full Metal Panic! which bodes very, very badly among die hard fans of the series. I myself had hopes that maybe this wouldn't suck, since FMP! could make a damn cool live action and I try to keep open-minded about things. Then I heard that Mandalay Pictures had their hearts set on an actor to play Sousuke. High School's Musical's Zac Efron.

There's a limit to how open-minded a person can be about a series they're passionate about.

I don't have anything against Zac. I'm sure he's a great actor, even though I've never actually sat down and watch any of his movies, but still know him by name (which is a feat for a scatterbrain like me) and though I'm sure people scoff and make fun of him, the truth of the matter is that you need at least some level of talent to become a household name the way Zac has. What worried me is two things; he claimed in an MTV interview that he's a big fan of comics and mangas, but mispronounced the word 'manga' a telltale sign that he's either he's only gotten into manga recently and not, as he claimed, at age 10, or that he's lying. No one who's really and honestly 'a big fan of manga' mispronounces the word manga, since we know it makes us look bad. My other, bigger worry is the fact that Zac's got a fanbase all his own, made up mostly of preteen girls who were High School Musical fans. Mandalay may decide to tone down on a lot of the crazy violence and the more mature jokes in order to appeal to this group instead of maintaining the integrity of the series, as the real fans hope they will.

But the things is, even though I agree with the 99.9% of the fanbase that insists that Zac would be a bad choice for Sousuke, I can't think of a suitable alternative. None of the big name male actors under the age of 25 in Hollywood right now really fit the part of Sousuke, and a part of me really hopes that Mandalay will find a fresh Asian face to play his role.

-Potential Sousuke Sagaras-

As far as Kaname goes... no names have been mention for her yet, and while I hope that an Asian actress will play her as well, I kind of doubt that's gonna happen. Still, looking through Hollywood actresses, a couple of faces popped out at me for potential lead females. They may not be the ethnicity I want, but I wouldn't object if any of these girls got the role of Kana-chan

-Potential Kaname Chidoris-

What do you guys think? Do you know any good Hollywood actors/actresses that can play Sousuke or Kana? And how about other roles, like Kyouko, Mao, Tessa and Kurtz? Throw out anyone you think will do a good job, and I'll add them to the list! (Just try to keep things reasonable, okay? I like Johnny Depp, but he's waaay too old to be playing a high school mercenary. )

gah... it's getting harder to hate zac effron with suck a fantabulous body like that... O_O
HE'S SEXIN' ME WITH HIS SEXY BEAM!!! >⌂<
oh... hell yeah, he can be Sousuke @_@ --STOP DOING THAT, DAMMIT!

but don't ask me about actors. i'm still holding hope that the movie won't be released to begin with. suffice it to say that a plot involving guns and a high school is unlikely to be produced in America.

which brings us to option 2: they release the movie, but with a vastly different plot (read: DBZ Evolution). this seems much more likely, unfortunately. studios couldn't care less about the films as long as they get juicy profits, making them willing to piss all over the source material for better ratings. keep also in mind that even by staying true to the material, some of the story would have to get cut to fit into a movie format. there will probably not be a sequel, so Kaname and Sousuke will probably end up together at the end of the film (i, for one, consider this a bad thing) and the more complicated aspects of the story will likely be ignored in favor of action and romance (which is damn sure how it'll be marketed).

in short, if this ends up being a good movie i will eat my entire manga collection.
you may hold me to that.

I admit that he's got a great body, but I still hold stubbornly to my compaints that Zac isn't the right choice for Sousuke.

I agree with you that they're probably gonna completely twist the plot of FMP into something unrecognizable, but I'm hoping that they'll at least keep the basic things true to the manga, like Kana's scary temper as 'the prettiest girl you'd never want to date', Sousuke's bad habit of solving every problem with (nonlethal) firearms, and just the general insanity of 'there's-a-mercenary-wreaking-havok-on-my-life!' To be honest, I'm already half expecting the guys at Madalay to take advantage of Kana growing up in New York by making her stay there, that way they won't have to deal with the whole Japanese school aspect of everything. They already changed the place where Sousuke was raised in the anime from Afghanistan to a fictional country called Helmajistan, due to 9/11, so it wouldn't surprise me if Mandalay makes cosmetic changes too.
Since it seems like this is gonna happen no matter how much die-hard fans complain otherwise, I figured I'd to my best to look for positive things about this until I see it, that way I won't go into the movie theatre expecting a total load of bull and a waste of $10.00 and two hours of my life.

Also what's all this about no adults being present in FMP? I mean, I'm gonna be heartbroken if they leave out Kalinin and Mardukas... And what about Kagura-sensei?! And Gauron sure as hell wasn't no kid!

There isn't going to make a live action movie. The producers announced it.
